I live about 5 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake last week and now most of my family are coming here from Virginia Beach to flee the hurricane. I figure we'll get a plague of locusts next week.

The best thing about Hurricanes are Hurricane Parties......

Case of water
Few cases of beer
Trip to liquor store
Ice/cooler
Gas for generator/flashlights

Best times of your life! If you havent partied through a hurricane you havent really partied...lol!

BTW. By the time it reaches up north it wont be that bad, just a tropical storm....NC/VA looks like its going to take the brunt of it and they have experienced much worse hurricanes than this. Maybe I should take my friends up on the offer to go ride out the hurricane with them

We should be so lucky as to have 'the sitch' and crew washed away...

You're right about H-cane parties Elay. Been thru lots of them here over the years, Ike being the last one. Now, my 2 huge dogs run to me bedroom whenever they hear thunder and heavy rain... lol

.

It's funny to me to be getting a hurricane up here. I lived in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Florida and have gone through many. I have my readiness-hat on!

It's never the hurricanes that really bother me, it's the bloody tornadoes. I HATE tornadoes!

Uhhh.... about ^ that. The NYers stole that list (mostly) from us south easterners LOL! H-parties are the BOMB, cept when the storms are really really bad. I grew up in Norfolk/VAB, and we lost our house during Hugo, then had damage during a few others, and my Dad died during Isabel. I now live in Ohio, but alot of friend and family are in the target area. I am using FB as an info center for them all.

Sorry to hear about your losses during those storms, I have lived here in the Hampton Roads area my entire life and this storm here worries me more than any I can remember!!

Thanks, hope all goes well with you guys! It looks to be a huge storm. Take care and see ya on the other side ;)

Well, at 2 AM here in Wilmington, NC, we've nothing more than a bit of rain and some wind. I'm actually just a tad north and everything's fine here. From FB I see that things in town seem to be much the same. I'm sure there's flooding as certain parts flood when a homeless guy pisses himself, but I've seen no damage of note so far.

Looks like we'll probably just geta few blow off storms if any at all. Best thing about being here is I don't have to deal with the hurricanes. :D Lol. Hope everyone else stays safe though.

For the first time ever, New York City is closing off all subway stations...

Good luck to those evacuating today, I have family in Pennsylvania but im keeping my fingers crossed they dont have to do anything more than maybe a flood watch...

Well I am in Florida and have faced an epic amount of hurricanes, including Andrew, Charlie, etc. Pretty much all super bad hurricanes. Irene was expected to hit us and it ended up changing paths. Well we got a little wind and some very minimal rain from it. I hope that it continues to be a none issue with other states.

Parts of N. Carolina got 17 inches of rain dumped on them in a couple hours. 6 deaths due to Irene thus far.

Well, one was a heart attack that occurred when a guy happened to be putting up some boards to protect his home, and another was a foolish fellow who was tempting fate by being out surfing in a storm, and a third occurred when a car got hit because people don't know how to drive when the traffic light's out. These deaths are tragic, as are all deaths, but it's a stretch to blame them on the weather.

Didn't hear any details on the fatalities... what happened to the others?

Well, the others were definitely due to the horrible weather. Branches falling, mostly, I think. There will likely be more. It looks like the East Coast will suffer a great deal of damage, although the storm seems to be weakening rather than gaining strength. Still there's a lot of damage to come what with the winds and flooding and all. There are a million people already without power, and I'm sure a lot of those folks who decided not to evacuate are wishing they had.

Here's hoping for the best.

I will repeat a couple but here are the fatalities that I know about from family reports: Surfer drowned in VAB, heart attack while hanging plywood in NC, tree branch crushed a man NC, 21 year old hydroplaned, womans daughter died in traffic accident when mom ran thru intersection without following "4 way stop" rules. 9 year old died at home when tree fell on his apartment building with his mom and himself inside.

Looks like the worst is over as it's no longer a hurricane and moving way faster now. NY faired pretty well considering... and the 9/11 memorials were unaffected. I bet a lot of New Yorkers are pissed they evacuated, which may bode badly if/when the next one hits.

They're New Yorkers. They'd be pissed no matter what.

A story of overreaction...
I was just in Taylorxxxx room [recent name change] and she was all batshit crazy saying the hurricane was part of the end of the world. Many guys were there trying to tell her to calm down and it was nothing to freak out over and this was no more than a bad rainstorm. She promptly started cussing them out and handing out 30 day bans for disagreeing with her. Evidently shes a very hyper city girl that needs a bit of education on what real mother nature tragedy is. I'd imagine the folks in New Orleans or Alabama or Florida would have not even blinked at Irene.
