    In THIS case all relevant information is probably stored elsewhere by MFC, but that's not going to be the situation in most investigations they perform. They still wouldn't want to alert the subject of their investigation that something was amiss. It's just, as far as I know, not how they do...

    I would think law enforcement wouldn't want the person being investigated to know anything was out of the ordinary, so they couldn't destroy any evidence, such as their hard drive or, hypothetically, flee to another jurisdiction.

As far as I know the incidents involved kids incidentally entering the background...
