So I'm a little late to this party.

The game has existed as a mod for awhile and now a Standalone version is in development. You can buy-in to the alpha for like 25 bucks.

Anyway, it's a zombie apocalypse game. You are a survivor and you spawn with nothing but a shirt, jeans, shoes, and a flashlight.

The goal is to survive. You run around the countryside, rummaging through houses, hospitals, schools, stores, fire stations and military bases looking for gear to help you survive.

You need everything from food/water to backpacks and bandages, to weapons and ammo.

Any given server may have anywhere from 20 to 40 people online at a time. The map is huge so I often go hours without seeing another player. But every time I DO see another player, things get intense because you never know if this person will be friendly or hostile. Maybe they will team up with you and share some food and ammo, or maybe they will try to kill you to take your gear.

When you die in this game. It's "permanent". As in, you can't just respawn nearby with your weapons and keep fighting. You are sent to a random spawn location with just your flashlight again.

I've really been enjoying it because of the unknown interactions from other players.

The game is currently in "pre-alpha" so there are tons and tons of bugs and glitches that can wreck your game session, but overall it's stable and enjoyable.

I haven't played it because I hit my zombie threshold some time ago, and I'm terrible at pvp. However, since about three-quarters of what I watch these days consists of video game let's plays, I have watched others play the game. The thing about DayZ that really interests me is the sociological aspect of people playing in a post-apocalyptic setting. It gives credence to the notion that it's the other survivors you have to watch out for. I find that more frightening than any monster.
