I feel silly even making a thread for this, but I really don't know what cat litter to get. I really wanted something flushable but it's all pretty expensive. However, i noticed a lot of the flushable litters say it's silica free, and upon some googling i think i'd prefer to not have a silica litter.

>_<

I'm sure many of you have cats, what do you use or suggest and how much does it cost you?

ALSO OMG IM SO STOKED FOR MY KITTY

I got nothin' for flushable :(

I have tried a few brands, but I love fresh step with clumping. Clumping is my friend! I just pour it and allow the dust to settle some before I let them have a go!

I like the crystally stuff cos you can more easily see where/when it needs to be changed. Plus my cat seems to prefer using it.

Oh and cost....well I'm in another country, but it varies by brand and type anyway. If you go to a pet supply store you can buy a 20kg sack that will last a long time for relatively cheaper than buying in small amounts at the supermarket.

over the years, ive had maybe 20 or so cats. [I do animal rescue and rehab for adoption]. You can buy all the hype and spend as much as you want but in the end, Ive found the clumping stuff thats dustless is perfectly fine. get a large roll of scented small bathroom trash bags for the screened clumps and toss the refuse out every day or 2. I buy the big green boxes at WallyWorld [24lbs maybe] for ~$6 or so. those last a pretty long time. You can also augment the deodorant faction by using arm N hammer carpet deodorizer in the litter. I also have NEVER used the flushable stuff. Depending on your plumbing, theres a strong chance it will create a blockage pretty quick if theres not enough water flow, low spots, or too much flushed at once. Then U get to listen to a plumber tell you the same thing and charge you $200-$300 to wash it through the lines. got any kitty pics to share ? :-D

It's never a good idea to flush something you can dispose of otherwise. Not only can it clog up your drain, but it also has to be processed by your municipality's sewage treatment system and that is just a waste of resources.

I buy big bags of cheap non-clumping clay-based scented litter. I tried the clumping stuff and did not care for it, but YMMV. I would suggest trying a few different types for a few weeks at a time and see what makes sense to you. Your cat will adapt just fine as long as you keep it tidy and in the same place.

Thanks everyone!

Has anyone had any experience with Feline Pine?

I'll probably but petco brand so i can just refill my litter thingie at their self-serve thingie.

THINGIE

No idea of brand name, but we used cat litter which was recycled paper: very lightweight (ideal for older people and those with back issues), very voluminous - but compared to the more traditional litter it was expensive and required a fresh fill each time rather than removing clumps n bumps. If you left it a lil too long, or put too little in then you had to give the tray a good wash too. So it was an expensive solution.

It would be flushable because it's effectively little bits of toilet paper - just don't chuck it all at once otherwise it'll be like throwing an entire toilet roll in there ;)

One family I lived with bought Feline Pine. Never again... The stuff disintegrates, so instead of sifting the shit out, you're sifting out the "litter".

I have not had any experience with litter in the past 10 years though, so maybe they've changed that.

Cheap dollar store clumping stuff.

It's just clay and cat poop, it can go in trash to the land fill.

Better that than diapers and plastic bottles.

However if you are the green type, you can buy compressed wood dust pellets. They work very well and smell decent.... like pine.

If you can find a feed store, a 50# bag of alfalfa pellets (horse feed) actually does an excellent job at absorbing odor and moisture. At 12 bucks a sack, it's a cheap and super effective alternative.

Plus you can dump that anywhere.... its poop and hay dust. You can't get more eco friendly than that.

I use the cheap clumping clay because I dig the clumping action, makes it easier to clean the pans.

I guess I should use the alfalfa pellets.... I make Al Gore sad.

They sell green pelleted cat litter its very expensive but all it is, is grass/alfalfa pellets....it's overpriced as cat litter. BUy the horse feed and save a buttload.

BTW... got kittehs? I can UPS you a few.

It isn't litter, but basically your cat's own personal bathroom.
It's stupid expensive, but I want one SO BAD.

I thought about that. Especially with a 90 day money back. Then I read the terms of that. Not so great.

I haven't experienced it but I worked at a vet clinic and people would talk about it. I had one person who loved it, but the rest hated it. They said it was like weird, wet sawdust that got tracked everywhere, was harder to clean, and because it retains moisture we had to switch one patient from it because they were getting infections on their paws from the urine (mind you, this was an older, crispy cat). I hear it doesn't do great with the smell....but heck! This doesn't mean you won't enjoy it!

But again, I love love love freshstep clumping cat litter. Tried the non clumping clay and hated it. Tried the crystals and they were alright, but my cat has sensitive paws and always hated crunching into the hard chunks. I AM going to be trying this other kind of weird litter because we were given a sifting-pan type dealio...so if/when I use that I'll letcha know! It will probably be me necroing this thread, lol!
