After about 15 months of being in my possession, my blu-ray player by LG has recently started to die on me.
It only recognizes DVDs and blu-rays after ejecting and re-inserting the disc about 50-60 times and that's just a pain in the bum. I watch DVDs every night to fall asleep so I'm kind of dependent on having a player that works. :?
The LG player has some other minor problems, too, so I'm not bothering with returning it. I'd like to buy a new player.

What can you guys suggest?
I don't need any special features. It just needs to play DVDs and blu-rays fluently and it should recognize them on the first try! I'd like to stay under 120€ / $160 and I'm looking for something by a big brand so I can find it on Amazon.

It's a bit more, but worth it for all the extra stuff you can do with it...

Playstation 3 Console. It's the only Blu ray player we own.

I agree with Amber. We have 2 PS3 consoles and love them. Not only is it a Blu-ray player but it also networks all of our computers together and we can broadcast something from one of our laptops onto our TV screen like videos, pictures, and MP3s. It's all wireless too other then the power cord and the HDMI that runs to our TV. Plus if you don't have a "smart TV" this also doubles as one. You can get Netflix etc. through the PS3 if you have a wireless internet connection in your home.

Otherwise Sony brand is a solid choice. Here is one example but there are quite a few different models to choose from.

Thirding the PS3 suggestion. You can pick em up relatively cheaply these days, they're pretty robust, they double up as a quality Blu-Ray player, they upscale regular DVDs, you can stream Netflix on there in HD. They also play games! :-D

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't want a PS3 :(
To put it simply, I don't need one.
- I can't see myself playing any games in the future, I just don't have the time. Or rather, I'm already wasting enough time on the internet as it is, I don't need another fun electrical device to keep me from studying. ;)
- We don't have Netflix here.
- Most regular BD players upscale DVDs, too, as far as I know.
- I don't need any fancy internet functions, either :/ I really only need something that plays my movies/TV series in a non-problematic way.

I should have said I don't need a Playstation in the original post, sorry. Thank you for your suggestions though!

I looked up the Panasonic player that Mott wrote about, and so many of the reviews say that it's super loud. :(

I looked at the Sony BDP s590 but it's 131 € on Amazon and that's too expensive for what I'm looking for. But it brought me to the S490, which is only 91 €, and it seems to have everything I need. The negative or neutral reviews seem to be criticizing only points I don't care much about.

FWIW Lily, I've never experienced any volume/sound/loudness issues with it, but I do have it connected to a Panasonic TV. Not that that should make any difference whatsoever but...

The Sony one you mentioned is supposed to be excellent too; you shouldn't be disappointed:

Hope it works out for you better than the LG one :thumbleft:

I already told you I have an s590, it's not cheap but when my Dad and I were looking it was the best. I found with home theater stuff, you tend to get what you paid for if you buy brand name. So I always try to get the best price and the model I want, not the best model for the price I want. I'm a snobby bitch right? jk

The 490 just doesn't have wi-fi, so if you don't want the network stuff, I think it's great. :)

I'd take it back to the fucking shop! 15 months is a bloody disgrace...
A quick Google search on LG Blu-ray players showed anything from 1-2 year manufacturers warranty, so I'd check that out first. If it's within warranty - back to the store.

If it's out of warranty, I would write to complain (to LG) - asking if they think it's acceptable to charge $X for something that lasted just 15 months - unless you have been using it in a rather robust or otherwise fashion! I would include where and when you bought it, as well as the type of use it has received and how disappointed you are with the short life of their product.

15 months is unacceptable (imo).

The warranty was definitely for 24 months.
Normally I, too, would say 15 months is unacceptable, and I'd have the shop send it in to LG. But to be fair I often left the player switched on during the night. I would fall asleep in front of the TV, watching a series on DVD, and then when the episode ended, the DVD menu would repeat itself again and again throughout the whole night. So I didn't treat the blu-ray player very well. :? I have a sleep timer on my TV, but unfortunately the player doesn't have something like that.

If I send it in, I'll probably be without a player for 4 weeks or so, and I don't want that :| Besides, there are other things about the player that I didn't like...

Send it in when you get your new one. That way you are switching brands, but still sticking it to them, and you have a backup, or a second one you can use somewhere if you have another TV.

Or send it in, get a new one, ebay the old one or give it to friends or a charity shop that can sell it on for charity? ;)

Or raffle it with a home-made dvd for fans
