So I have had my way with UO, and Darkfall. I cant find a decent free mmo, anyone think the logical next step is to finally give WoW a try or is its community waning too?

I'd say if over 11 million people are still subscribed worldwide, WoW has still got some alluring factors. Do EEET!

I wouldn't assume any free MMO these days is actually worth it, unless you don't really want to spend too much time and just kill an hour here and there.

Aion blows (sorry Licky!) and costs the same as WoW. Guild Wars is the only one I can think of that has no monthly fee, but it is very PvP focused. (You also can't make your character jump or run off a path, so I could never play GW again, that annoys me too much!) Warhammer Online was the only other MMO that I would ever give a second try, but again very PvP heavy.

So... WoW it up, baby!

WoW is actually stagnant and slightly declining 11.5 to 11 million in the last year and a half I think. However BC and LK aren't out in China yet. Cat will revitalize the game I think. It's what got me to rejoin and start leveling again. However 11,000,000 x $15 = PROFIT.
I used to be a HUGE Warhammer 40k player (table top) and will try 40k Online when it comes out (they're supposedly working on it). I don't see WoW going free, but if someone sends you a referral off here they'll get a free month if you sign up.

I just reactiviated my WoW account around 3 weeks ago and I am playing the lower levels. There are definitely enough people playing on my server to make it feel alive. My gaming partner tells me that not many people play the lower levels now so I am just trying to grow my toon a little to get into some of the more interesting stuff.

I played DAOC for 7 -8 years and it did truly die for the most part... sometimes only a few hundred people would be on a server at a time. DAOC would not know what to do with 11 million subs.

I think WoW will be alive and well for some time to come.

alright.... there's Atlantica, which is pretty good. Very focused on PvP or PvE, up to you, depending on what you're up for. Then there's Heroes of Newerth, which is in serious beta, and you need to be invited, but it's very based on Defense of the Ancients (which is based off of WCII/WCIII). Also, RuneScape is alright for a Java based, browser game.

No it means there are over 11 million insane people in the world :p I personally prefer LotRO.

Oh my... really?! I played the beta for LOTRO, un-installed and never looked back. WoW is my basis of comparison for any MMORPG. Nothing else has quite cut it so far, obviously, or I wouldn't have come back to WoW. Been playing since January of 2005 with only a few breaks to try the new stuffs.

Whoa. I was in the beta for LOTRO too, and uninstalled it post haste. I have also been playing WoW since January 1st, 2005...

Wait... Are we the same person?

I was going to say separated at birth. But that might make our MFC encounters way too creepy, so lets just leave it as we share common interests. :booty:

Yea, I tried LotR and only lasted 1 day

The only other MMORPG that I play besides WoW is DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online). EQ & DAoC both died due to WoW related issues, as many of you I'm sure will agree.

DDO is at least free to play, though you can purchase items and quests with real money if you so choose. It's a decent game, the UI and graphics don't hold a candle to WoW, but hey, it's free. I do prefer the combat system to the Warcraft one, but that's probably because I'm a huge Dungeons & Dragons fan in the first place (D20-sys ftw) and I enjoy the leveling process/progression likely for the same reason. The always instanced quests are interesting, but that means you really can't solo, so you're pretty screwed when you're friends aren't around.

Also, I love that the dungeons have traps in them and rogues need to disable those. That's something they should adapt into World of Warcraft. FoSho.

That's so 2005. Rogues had to do that in the Suppression Room in Blackwing Lair.

As for new MMORPGs, Rift launched this week. It's fun.

I am digging RIFT, right now playing a Reaver+Paladin+Warlord Warrior Dwarf.

Just took a look at a Rift video. Looks just like Warhammer Online (which I enjoyed for about 3-4 months then it was just the same old shit.) But if ya like it, so be it. Ha! I'm just sick of EVERY time I discuss WoW in MFC chat I get "You should play RIFT it's great!" No, don't think so.

Just came across this. I've been playing a little Rift since the beta and it really is a pretty nice game. I don't hate WoW, and all MMOs have something in common with other ones in the sword and sorcerer genre, but it's a lot of fun. How many different types of quests, mobs and dungeons can you create, after all?

I played WoW since its beta and LOTRO and WAR, and so far this is still a lot of fun and different enough to be interesting. It's not perfect, the game launched very cleanly, and there are a lot of things to do. The crafting kind of sucks, but that's a little hard to get right. There is a lot of variability in what you can do with a single character. I spend a lot of time in PvP, but the PvE is pretty well done also. I enjoy leveling and learning new skills and new encounters in small dungeons, and you get a lot of that in a new game. I was really waiting for TERA, but I'm enjoying this enough to keep me happy until then.

Been playing Rift since Beta. Haven't logged into WoW since Rift went live. From what I heard from some friends is that a lot of people jumped ship to Rift after the release. Guilds they were in that often had 20 people online any given moment dropped to 5 people online.

I really got sick of all the imbalance in WoW and how everything has to revolve around PvP. Introduction of arena's were the worst thing that happened to that game.

I think one of the greatest things Rift has is the ability to switch specs so easily. With 4 specs to choose from its awesome when you are typically melee, but boss does frontal and backward cleaves so you just switch to ranged. Need some extra healing? That's OK, I'll switch to my bard or my chloromancer.

In case anyone wants to try Rift, there is a trial this weekend.
