You may not like him (or even have heard of him) but it's a good read none the less.
I'll get back to this ^^^^^ after I eat something, you are always posting links to some fucking ridiculously long bit of crap, and I don't want to starve to death just yet!

(Except being hungry and coming back to this, the rest I made up. Working on troll 101 :-D )

Trolls find out what people fear or hate, and then they exploit it to hurt them. Violentacrez had the misfortune to run into a better troll.

Thanks, Shaun, I had been rather confused about exactly what a troll encompassed. I even searched here once for a troll definition thread, but found nothing. May be make a interesting thread, to see what everybody's take is. I think using the word to describe every nasty, mean, angry asshat on MFC is too easy, and is lumping about 30% of MFC in one group. I had seen a troll as the clever asshat's, asshat. And have found them not so easy to run off once or twice, bc their nasty is based in truths. So far anyway, when the model has to get out the ban hammer, nice beats nasty regardless.

lol I love this bit:
Under Reddit logic, outing Violentacrez is worse than anonymously posting creepshots of innocent women, because doing so would undermine Reddit's role as a safe place for people to anonymously post creepshots of innocent women.

I am OK with that.

IMO troll the "modern" noun came from the verb. From merriam-webster.com, troll (intransitive verb): to fish by trailing a lure or baited hook from a moving boat. Great article, I love Gawker.

Unless i'm missing something, and I might be, I have only read that one link and done no further research

But its people like this that make me belive that the Term "troll" is just a cuddly way of describing an idiot whos intention is to shock and harm, for example this cretin posts jailbait pics treading very carefull on the line of whats legal and whats not, Sick and perverted are two better words than "troll"

It's a cuddly term for "sociopath on the internet" , or maybe "malignant narcissist on the internet"? Whatever , one of the two :)

Oh yes, very cuddly...

Ladies and gentlemen, please remember that a good half of internet lingo was coined by geeks. Think of trolls in the dnd sense.

d20 SRD Troll article

d20srd said:
Trolls walk upright but hunched forward with sagging shoulders. Their gait is uneven, and when they run, their arms dangle and drag along the ground. For all this seeming awkwardness, trolls are very agile.

A typical adult troll stands 9 feet tall and weighs 500 pounds. Females are slightly larger than males. A troll’s rubbery hide is moss green, mottled green and gray, or putrid gray. The hair is usually greenish black or iron gray.

Trolls speak Giant.

Combat

Trolls have no fear of death: They launch themselves into combat without hesitation, flailing wildly at the closest opponent. Even when confronted with fire, they try to get around the flames and attack.

Rend (ex)
If a troll hits with both claw attacks, it latches onto the opponent’s body and tears the flesh. This attack automatically deals an additional 2d6+9 points of damage.

Regeneration (ex)
Fire and acid deal normal damage to a troll. If a troll loses a limb or body part, the lost portion regrows in 3d6 minutes. The creature can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to the stump.

Violentacrez Fired: Michael Brutsch Loses Job After Reddit Troll Identity Exposed By Gawker

A friend of mine made the perfect comment about posting anything on the internet when he read that:

"Freedom of speech doesn't protect you from the consequences of what you say"

Which pretty much sums it up nicely.

A troll is, pretty much, someone who posts stuff they know (or hope) will get a negative reaction. It's a negative attention thing, like when kids do shit they know will bug you so you'll respond, or like when my cat races in and bellyslides across my side table knocking everything off and then flees precisely because he KNOWS I'll be pissed.

I don't know why this dude suddenly came to mind, but that guy Star who worked on New York's radio station HOT97 pissed off a lot of people when he mocked Aaliyah's death and made these stupid plane crash sound effects to try to be funny. I remember that he got fired from the radio station for it, but I didn't know there was another incident after that.

I don't think the world troll is appropriate for Violentacres. He wasn't posting the content that he is "guilty of posting" on Reddit for negative attention. There are a TON of people who enjoy the stuff he posted and moderated. He was doing it to share something he enjoyed with other like-minded Redditors, whether we or society think it's acceptable or not.

I'm probably more in the opinion that Adrian Chen is closer to a troll (though not in the technical sense) as he spent time doxxing Violentacres in order to post his gawker article. (I'm starting to like that site less and less, lol.) I may have read a bit more about it within the Reddit community than many ACF'ers have, but that's just how I see everything from what I've read.

While he did post content/links that a ton of people "enjoyed", statements he made:

Makes me think the troll label fits, at least a little bit ;) And his offer to rat out other Redditors to Chen in return for his anonymity, may not be trolling, but it certainly makes me wonder why he still has a number of defenders (some of whom are sending him money).

Yeah, Gawker, and a number of websites/blog weighing in on this matter do not hold any moral high ground on this issue (and others). But let's not forget that key pieces of information on the "doxxing" came from "former online friends", presumably fellow Reddit mods/employees (according to the Gawker story).

I know next to nothing about Gawker or Reddit, so all I have to go by is that article. But based on that evidence alone, I would argue that ViolentAcrez is (amongst other things) a troll. I'd also argue that Chen is more of an investigative journalist than he is a troll - uncovering information in the public interest, exposing (what he, and what I would imagine a lot of his readership, would consider to be) wrongdoing and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
The "jailbait" thread (while pretty hideously icky) may have been VA pursuing an interest and encouraging others to do likewise, his other threads/subreddits are clearly designed to piss people off and do nothing else. It's just him saying "hey, everybody, there's some real fucked up shit out there, I'm gonna post said fucked up shit and if you don't like it, fuck you! And hey, did you know racism is a thing? I'm gonna post racist shit here and if you don't like it, fuck you! And while I'm still here, did you know misogny is a thing? Well, I'm gonna post misogynist shit here too, and if you don't like it, fuck you!".
:twocents-02cents:

I suppose beyond VA's subreddits and the content he uploaded, I can see why troll is used. But this Chen guy is not just some investigative journalist. (So far both the gawker and gizmodo articles I've read were not seemingly written by a professional.) Apparently Chen has done his fair share of lame shit, including impersonating other people of Reddit and making light of a person wanting to kill himself.

The whole thing is pretty dumb.

Trolling, real trolling, is an evil practice. To purposely victimize people whose psyches you don't know, is just as evil as bullying someone offline. It's no longer "free speech" when you really want to hurt someone for shits and giggles.

I always liked her. It was very sad when she died. Of course making fun of and being critical of people who can't defend themselves makes them a coward more than a troll. Its like all of the trouble Kristin Stuart is having at the moment. She is what 22? why not blame the 35 year old man with the gorgeous wife. He was old enough to know better, she is just a kid.

Maybe he's both. And his trollery is what got him fired from two different radio stations.
