Back in the age of sail when cannons were used the cannon balls were stacked in a dimpled brass plate called a monkey. They were made of brass to prevent corrosion in the salt water environment. However, the cannon balls themselves were made of iron because it was cheaper and you were only going to use them once. It is amazing how many terms/sayings have military origins. Some others that have origins in the Royal Navy:

three square meals a day: The Royal Navy knew the health of the crew was important for morale. Therefore they did their best to keep the crew well fed. So one of the benefits of joining the Navy was you got three square meals a day.

Limey: Related to the above, the Royal Navy discovered that feeding the crew limes prevented scurvy. They didn't understand why at the time (vitamin C deficiency) so they just did it. The French Navy started using Limey for the Royal Navy as a derogatory term (as they were dying of scurvy no doubt), but eventually the term was expanded to include all Brits, not just Royal Navy crewmen.
