Hey! I'm a professional photographer in the city. I just wanted to put my name out there if anyone is looking to shoot some picture sets around NYC. I live in East Village (Stuy Town if you want to be specific).

I'm looking to switch my portfolio up a bit so I wouldn't charge for the first time we'd shoot. I'm open to shooting just about everything.

Obviously, I wouldn't be involved in the photos other than making them (I feel like that's a given but I'll be explicit in mentioning it.)

I'm of course willing to sign a agreement to not resell, reveal your real name / location, etc as I've done for previous clients.

I've got a full and mobile studio setup (Alien Bees w/ battery supplys, softboxes, dishes, and speedlights too) as well as a top end Canon with all L series lenses.

I'm trying to be as transparent and open as possible about all this as I realize it could be a sensitive subject.

Check out my work and let me know!

Oh man, you don't appear to be a dude with a camera. What are your rates?

I forgot to mention that you're encouraged to bring a friend.

I wouldn't charge for the first time we'd shoot together as I'm trying to get a foothold into the market a bit. Feel free to shoot me a message!

LMAO. So you want chicks to come work for free. Okay good luck dude. FML.

- Girls are not going to work for free, they also have no interest in your crappy photo's in exchange for our time. This is not how this industry works. You have to actually pay models unless your a LEGIT photographer who has shot a million pornstars.

And your not going to charge LMAO.. in WHAT world would a model PAY to shoot with a photographer (again unless you have shot for like playboy and have crazy street cred) - Your in dream land dude.

EDIT: your model mayhem has NO photo's, in what world do you think girls will Trade with you? You have o references, you have no photo's?... Your going to have to research what industry rates are and pay models.

So you looking to build your adult portfolio instead of private collection?

I'm a retired fetish model, and I've done hundreds of portfolio shoots fo free because that meant I didn't have to pay photographer fees and I got to keep the prints for promotion and my portfolio.

@BiancaBaker his portfolio is on his website.

To be fair, there are a lot of models who do Trade-For-Print (TFP) or Trade-For-CD (TFCD) shoots where they don't get paid, because their focus is to get new images for their portfolio, and they feel that working with that particular photographer will benefit them, and result in getting paid work. I did shoots like that when I was in my 20s, and new and needed photos. A few times I did pay professional photographers to shoot, and was glad that I did because we got some amazing shots. But then again, I wasn't paying $1,075 rent at that time, and didn't really have bills like I do now, so...yeah. Lol.

I don't pay for shoots anymore though, and I only do shoots where I am being paid.

Yes, exactly. I want more experience shooting adult and models want photo sets that they can sell on MFC/cb/etc. Sounds pretty mutually beneficial. Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my post?

Thanks for the welcome!

Models who want nice photos that they will exclusively, or partially own the rights to pay for photographers all the time.

Yep! Considering I'm just opening this section in my portfolio I didn't have an intention to charge immediately because, as highlighted before, I'm not a Playboy photographer (yet).

Yeah of course! Sorry if I wasn't super clear in my original post. They're strictly for expanding my portfolio and me releasing parts of my copyright to the model so they'll be able to sell the photos as sets.

I pay for shoots.. with professionals i know will take awesome photos. Not just photographers who shoot pornstars but people like @jalbxxx and stuff are well worth my while to pay for shoots. I'm always super happy.

I create my yearly calendars out of paid shoots most of the time..with a few others thrown in. I pay because i need to make sure i have full rights over the photos, and because they're going to be amazing and i can get exactly what i want rather than a trade shoot where I'm having to compromise. I also did plenty of trade shoots when i was just trying to get some good photos at the start of my camming career.

I know you checked his MMayhem and didn't see much but he does have a decent portfolio on his website and i feel like you may have jumped the gun a lil bit on this one.

Thank you. And yeah, my MM is super out of date as I've been using thehhub.com instead.

Agreeing with some above: models absolutely will pay for photos if you've got good imagery, a solid reputation, and a rock solid contract regarding their privacy and copyright ownership. I only shoot paid photography work. While some of my work has been featured in Hustler and online with Playboy, I haven't shot a million porn stars. But I have still managed to photograph and film many, many cam models and adult entertainers.

Pro tip: Especially in this industry... avoid linking MM. MM "photographers" have a reputation and even without clicking links, 7/10 people (myself included) will have some preconceived notion of you simply because you mentioned MM. Just show your best work on your website. Better yet, just link to specific galleries that may be of interest to your target audience here. Most models likely won't care that you're a concert photographer. They want to see that you you can photograph women in an intimate setting without looking like a creep and photograph them well. If they care to do some digging to see some of your other work, they'll do it.

Thanks for the tip! I wish I could edit old posts, I'd pull it off. I figured it would add to the 'not a GWC' thing, but apparently it's the opposite.

Any other industry protips?

Meh. Find reputable people to work with and build your own reputation from there :) Getting into the industry as an outsider can be difficult. Getting your foot in the door is easier if somebody reputable invites you in first :)

Hi there

I'm Red....city native

I notice your content/history and many accounts is all pretty new.. (looks like it starts around may). Is the industry in general new for you or just the adult side? Not throwing shade, really just trying to get to know you a little more. Do you currently also have a day job?

I went ahead and followed your social media in the meantime :)

Be patient with us please. I assure you that any combativeness is only coming from a place of concern. A quick once over on the forum will show you that bullshit threads with scammy-esk guys are started daily. So naturally many of us are skeptical and protective.

Hope to learn more about you.

Sure! I'll go into some history. I was a film major at UArts in Philly, I dropped out in 2006 and joined the Army (EOD, if anyone cares) where I served on active duty till November 2013 stationed in Germany with a deployment to Afghanistan. While I was at UArts, I learned as much as I could but I also realized traditional learning wasn't for me. While I was in Germany I decided that photography was, in my mind superior to film for expression. So it started there. I shot a lot and learned a lot while I travelled around Europe.

Enter May (I guess it was May?) Of this year when I met a concert photographer at The Decemberists show at Brooklyn Steel. He wanted me to shoot for him after talking a bit. (I had never gotten rid of my gear from Germany and only own L series lenses, so nothing is dated) so I started shooting for a pretty large music blog in the city. From there I started shooting for a second blog too. I've been to a ton of shows the past few months.

Shows slowed down a bit for the heat of the summer and I wanted to keep growing my portfolio so I started reaching out to models on Instagram and have had massive success with that. I discovered that I enjoy it more than concert photography, it's a lot more calculated with lighting (can't shoot flash from the photo pit) and just as technical. (And I have more than 3 songs in the pit to get the shots I want.)

Yes, I have a day job, I'm an embedded software engineer (C/C++) at a defense contractor in midtown (yes, they exist haha), been with this company since I moved from DC (another defense contractor, robotics, also a software engineer there) in November 2015. But ultimately I'd love to be able to transition to photography full time and quit my day job. Hence the hustle.

I hope that clears things up!

Adam

I actually suggested he join here and feel it out- and hopefully find a mutually beneficial arrangement.
even if models aren't looking to sell content from working with him they can certainly use it in marketing.

I did the very thing he was suggesting with several photographers when I was younger. My entire portfolio was originally a free/free arrangement between myself and several photographers to build our own portfolios.
being nostalgic I recently looked two of them up- guys I worked with years ago. They apparently went on to do a considerable amount of high fashion work for names like vogue and lancome.
in order for a model to be paid for a shoot- she better know everything about being a model and willing to put in a 12-14 hr day as well as already have a decent portfolio under her belt, that she probably paid for through her agency, if she didn't already work out the aforementioned free/free arrangement.
