Any techies in here? Im looking for a beast of a laptoo that can cope with video editing as well as camming and will see me through at least 3 years of camsite requirement upgrades. Ive been looking at the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro but heard it can get very loud when hot (not ideal when camming), the latest macbook pro does everytbing but i hhate mac. I have been recommended various ROG's. Basically it just needs ssd, i7, at least 16gb ram and decent battery life. Willing to spend up to £1600 so dont want to mess up and get something not perfect :-/

I personally use a custom Macbook Pro for camming and serious editing and Lenovo z50 i7 for everything else. The Lenovo is a beast for the price point and it exists as my processor-heavy-task slave. I think, however, you would be happiest getting a machine custom built to those specs given your concerns.

I know you hate MAC (don't know why since MAC's are pretty compatible with mostly every software now) But I have a beast of a computer (a MAC) which I love- MAC's also last pretty close to 10 years where as a PC wouldn't last that long. Most MAC's are i-7's and can handle any site. I also have a custom MAC and it's amazing. It literally does everything I want plus every editing program I need MAC now has.

I agree with everything Vera just said as well- you may want to looking into getting a custom labtop/desktop

I use this: MSI GE70 Apache Pro-012 17.3-Inch Laptop

It exports even long videos in about 10 minutes maximum. It's the best laptop I've ever had. It only has 12GB of RAM though, still high end but a little less than you're looking for. Do you mind if I ask why you need 16GB? I think 12GB even exceeds the most tech heavy websites requirements.

I didn't know there was such a thing lol i only heard of 8gb 16gb and 32gb. Is your apache quite loud? X

Oooh see that just makes me want to get the ghost even more im just scared i'll be in the middle of a show and it'll sound like jet planes taking off lol.

I'd give the HP Elitebook line a look. Mac quality construction with the choice of any OS you like (work great with Linux), aluminum body helps disperse heat/keep cool to the touch and under full load encoding long videos mine never makes more than a whisper. Part of that is the the MagLev fans they use. The $3 vs $10 part (the fan) makes a heck of difference.

I like my cheap Acer too for other reasons, but it gets hot and sounds like a jet as you say. And its keyboard is a nuisance vs its HP mate.

you can go through and add your own components, and if there are any clashes it tells you. They build it for you. If you need more advice they reply pretty fast too. You can get a really high end gaming machine for under £800, the same thing would be waaaaaay over 1k in john lewis or pc world

I'll say this, if you're doing more than just very minor editing go for 16gb of ram. More ram is always a good idea. More ram is ALWAYS a good idea.
I personally wouldn't buy any new computer with less than 12gb, bare freaking minimum. In a year or two you'll be kicking yourself if you just get 8gb.
Before buying anything check the processor speed on one of the benchmark sites. Sometimes what you think is a good computer is actually shit and you'd be better off with an older model on ebay.

(I say this all as a clip maker whose computer takes 2-9 hours to render videos. BUY MORE RAM.)

Thank you aeryn that's exactly why i was looking for these specs i mentioned. Whilr i don't do tons of videos, when i do it is special fx and i use premiere pro and after effects. Still undecided on the laptop, there are just so many variables lol. I guess the best thing may be to get a decent laptop then save up for a custom build editing workstation. The thing is i really love and prefer just tinkering while the comouter is on my lap and while I'm doing other things like camming.

If you're doing premiere pro and after effects you should look for computers that have the Adobe recommended specs.
After Effects System Requirements

...and definitely go for 16gb of ram.

Indeed, I would warn you off AMD laptops unless specifically spec'd at this time since AMD bought and absorbed ATI to produce APUs - no, not the guy on The Simpsons. They're single die units that integrate the CPU and GPU - which is great for saving space and using less energy. Problem is they absolutely SUCK for producing. Great for watching the latest video, have a real market for many things, slower than a 10 year old CPU for producers.

RAM never hurts.

Thanks all. Just to update i bought a machine from pc specialist and am now waiting for it to arrive :)
