The Koran says that unless you are Muslim, Jewish, Catholic or Zoroastrian you must die, and that any place that is not Muslim with only the above religions as accepted minorities is the realm of war, and any level of violence is acceptable until the above state exsts.

A peaceful religion?

1000 yeasrs ago when everyone in europe and the the middle east ware practicing Christians, Muslims, Jews or Zoroastrians, Islam was a much kinder religion than Christianity. Refugees from oppression ran to Muslim countries because they would be much better treated. In the last 100 years the West has changed completely, aquiring standards of acceptance and accomodation that are unprecentented in human history. The Jews have always had a mechanisim for this in their religion, but in the west is was driven by democracy and rule of law leading to a search for basic human rights. Some countries like Iraq under Saddam and Turkey under Ataturk have tried to blend this modern model with Islam, by trying to separate the cultural bagage from the core beliefs of Islam. Islam has no means to achieve the same thing as the West or the Jews until such time as they move to rule of law and democratic governments and get dragged in the same direction- or despot like Saddam imposed the model on them.

I have been a fan of Ayaan Hirsi Ali for many years (even before the BS at Brandais). Any recommendation on which of her books is the best?
