anything to do with the black crowes always cheers me up !
i like to jump about crazy and dance like chris robinson!
but most of all when im hurting i just stick on the stereophonics album "you gotta go there to come back" probably cos the singer was going through a break up when he wrote it

I like all emotional music when I go through break-ups. Not necessarily sad, but music with heart and feeling. Mumford and Sons, Black Keys, and Pucifer are all bands that always make me feel better.

Last song I played for my ex when he was breaking up with me. Ruined the band for him apparently, but I love this song and always will.

If you don't listen to This American Life, you should. One of my favorite episodes is where Starlee Kine, with no musical background, actually writes a break-up song, and interviews Phil Collins toward the end.

Phil Collins first two albums were pretty much fueled by his divorce from his first wife. Some really good songs from those two albums.

Hard to beat, "I Don't Care Anymore", for that particular phase where you, you know, don't.

Less popular, but one I always liked, "Do You Know, Do You Care?"

For the other end of the spectrum, one of my favorites is "You Know What I Mean."

No breakup music thread would be complete without... (PS all the angry comments to exes on the youtube page are pretty hilarious)

I can't post the youtube video right this moment, but look up "No Children" by The Mountain Goats. Best breakup song ever.

Kanye West - Blame Game

This song is amazing. It sounds all kinds of awesome for a start - with that beautiful Aphex Twin piano sample running throughout - and the lyrics are pretty fucking fascinating.
It has a kind of feverish feel to it, one second Kanye's blaming her for the collapse of the relationship, the next he's shouldering the blame himself. One second he's reminiscing about "gripping up, fucking and choking her" in the bathroom, the next he's calling her out for letting her brother buy coke with his money or revealing how he found out she was cheating on him.
And the Chris Rock spiel at the end is inspired. It's Kanye at his most passive aggressive and bitter, bringing in Chris Rock to deliver a monologue in which Kanye vicariously takes credit for his ex-girlfriend being the woman she is today.
But for all his bitterness and childishness, the line "I can't love you this much" is key (I think). The relationship was too much for him to handle and it's left him feeling conflicted and powerless in the aftermath, hence his feelings being all over the place during the song.

A breakup song by my favorite band of almost 7 years. The lyrics are wonderful and I can so relate them.

I always listen to breakup when I'm going through a breakup or general heartache. It's just good to know that some day in the past someone else was feeling the way you are now.

for the first day of a heartbreak I always listen to mariah carey without you :

AND :

over and over. Some people say these songs make them want to commit suicide (my friends) but they are my perfect cathartic cry songs.

Then I get up and put on some angry 90's NIN or something and run my ass off. Then I feel better.

Can't beat a bit of country in times of relationship strife:

When Hank ain't cutting it's time to pull out the big guns:

Nobody Wins

This has put me in THE BEST mood recently.

EDIT: WRONG VIDEO LOL

Many already posted are my go to songs as well. 'I don't care anymore' and 'Don't speak', definitely.
The descendents have written songs for every emotion I have ever had, ever.

This shall suffice for now.
