My whole family are rugby fanatics except me lol..so I get mailed shit like this all the time but this one actually made me laugh out loud

Rugby Geniuses

Jono Gibbs, Chiefs
"Nobody in Rugby should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."

Rodney So'ialo, Hurricanes, on University
"I'm going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes."

Colin Cooper, Hurricanes head coach
"You guys line up alphabetically by height." And, "You guys pair up in groups of three, then line up in a circle."

Chris Masoe (Hurricanes) on whether he had visited the Pyramids during his visit to Egypt ...
"I can't really remember the names of the clubs that we went to."

Colin Cooper on Paul Tito
"He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning regardless of what time it is."

Kevin Senio ( Auckland ), on Night Rugby vs Day Games
"It's basically the same, just darker."

David Nucifora ( Auckland ) talking about Troy Flavell
"I told him, 'Son, what is it with you... Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, 'David, I don't know and I don't care.'

David Holwell (Hurricanes) when asked about the upcoming season:
"I want to reach for 150 or 200 points this season, whichever comes first."

Ma'a Nonu
"Colin has done a bit of mental arithmetic with a calculator."

Phil Waugh
"We actually got the winning try three minutes from the end but then they scored."

Jerry Collins
"I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body."

Tony Brown
"That kick was absolutely unique, except for the one before it which was identical."

Tana Umaga
"I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."

Doc Mayhew
"Sure there have been injuries and deaths in rugby, but none of them serious."

Anton Oliver
"If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again."

Ewan McKenzie
"I never comment on referees and I'm not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat."

Murray Mexted
(1) "Andy Ellis the 21 year old, who turned 22 a few weeks ago"
(2) "He scored that try after only 22 seconds - totally against the run of play."
(3) "I would not say he (Rico Gear) is the best left winger in the Super14, but there are none better."
(4) "Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw."
(5) "Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer."

The best
Murray Deaker:
"Have you ever thought of writing your autobiography?"
Tana Umaga:
"On what?"

I think you (or more correctly, whoever compiled that list) missed the obvious use of humour in at least 3-4 of those - but that often happens when people are searching for something to fit their opinion :thumbleft:

(in other words, some of those are witty - which someone mistook for stupidity because they are... well, make your own mind up :D).

I can't speak to their wisdom, but they have fantastic legs. I used to LOVE watching Rugby on TV, and it was not for the sport of it. Hehehe. Mmm. Rugby.

I dunno who compiled it...but point out the witty quotes for me please lol, even re-reading them I can't see 'em.

I see sportsmen (of all codes) and sports commentators make stupid remarks like this on tv all the time and if it's humour they never show it :P

And for the record I'm not picking on rugby players in particular...a good family friend of mine played for the Wallabies (Australian rugby union team) for 5 years in the 90s, and he's a very articulate and fun guy.

Jono Gibbs, Chiefs
"Nobody in Rugby should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."
I saw wit :) The type where people point and laugh and go "ahhhh you thick bastard, ha ha - you said it wrong" - to which you respond "yes, that's the point..."

Chris Masoe (Hurricanes) on whether he had visited the Pyramids during his visit to Egypt ...
"I can't really remember the names of the clubs that we went to."
Witty, slightly sarcastic. "Party animal, non of that culture shit" - or if clubs means Rugby clubs (I'm unaware Egypt plays the game!), same thing. If he's there for a Rugby tour, then it's not a culture visit is it - they're there to play Rugby, so keep questions on topic :D
Seen that sort of response in many areas, usually a "keep on topic" response...

Kevin Senio ( Auckland ), on Night Rugby vs Day Games
"It's basically the same, just darker."
Sarcasm. Night Rugby is... Rugby. Played when it's darker. What do they expect "Why it is so vastly different, it's like playing volleyball with a beach ball".

David Nucifora ( Auckland ) talking about Troy Flavell
"I told him, 'Son, what is it with you... Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, 'David, I don't know and I don't care.'
The wit in the response is fucking fast thinking - BRILLIANT!

Ma'a Nonu
"Colin has done a bit of mental arithmetic with a calculator."
Oh come on, you don't see sarcastic humour there? You could add punctuation to really pronounce it.

Ma'a Nonu
"Colin has done a bit of mental arithmetic... with a calculator."
;)

A sarcastic response...

Sarcasm is said to be the "lowest form of wit". Am I giving them too much leeway? Without seeing their faces first hand, and knowing their personality, maybe...

Some of them also can be explained (although line up in a circle is difficult to imagine. But firstly order by height, and when there's equal height, by alphabet is exactly what the first part means - and pair up in groups of 3 means pair up, and then form groups of 3 (pairs).

yeah... these gentlemen aren't the sharpest tools in the shed Zoomer.

If you credited all those responses to subtle, razor sharp wit that goes over everyone's heads, you're giving them way too much credit.

They also get regularly body tackled and slammed in the head by very large guys, doesn't help their cognition.

sometimes I think rugby is our state religion...pretty entertaining to watch live but not a fan of it on tv. went to a few world cup games when it was held in aus a few years ago.

There are a lot of injuries though, my dad and uncle both have bad shoulder and back respectively from old rugby injuries now that they're older.

Hands up if you figured out that these people did not say these things.

Just google "Norman Einstein" and you'll find any number of people credited with that quote. You can check the others too. A lot of them have been around for years. Funny, but nothing in particular to do with rugby or the individuals mentioned.

Yeah wow you're right...a couple I googled came up with the rugby players the only credited source but a lot of the others are attributed to all sorts of people.

Why lie about who said it? If it was said at all that is...I don't get that, it's no less funny if they credit the real person even if you don't know who he is.
