Porn and Google Glass Are Natural Bedfellows

Last week's awesome Google Glass demo proved that strapping a decent quality camera to a person's face makes for awesome first-person viewing. Funnily enough, the porn industry thought the exact same thing.



It's incredibly easy to see why porn's interested in Google Glass—we don't need to spell out exactly why first-person shots are attractive. But porn producers are already thinking about how they can put it to use, with Pink Visual's Quentin Boyer telling PCMag that "a device that allows you to shoot high quality video in a truly hands-free fashion will make shooting POV porn that much easier." Nice.

But the interesting thing for us is that porn has historically made technology. Look at the VHS versus Betamax war: porn sided with VHS and it won out. The same thing has happened time and time again with various technologies through the ages, so that probably means that if porn adopts Google Glass it'll get a massive kick in its forward-looking pants.

While porn won't make Google Glass socially acceptable on its own, where porn goes others tend to follow. We could see non-blue movie studios pick up Google Glass too, especially if it genuinely succeeds in porn. If that happens, it could only be a matter of time before it becomes socially acceptable to wear a camera on your face. Until then, prepare yourself for some interesting new angles in your erotica.

It's funny when "technology" sites promote technology myths. Porn was not the deciding factor for Beta/VHS. VHS provided better licensing terms and reduced cost and ease of usage. It was also based on the industry's rejection of Sony attempting to enforce a standard.
