I hope I am posting this in the right sub-forum. Just heard the sad news of Gore Vidal's passing.

Author and playwright Gore Vidal dies aged 86.

I'm not a big reader of his fiction, but I am of his essays and political writings. Books like Imperial America: Reflections on the United States of Amnesia gave me, as a left-leaning Brit, hope that not everyone in America was a blood-thirsty maniac. Infact, it taught me that the majority of Americans were just as sickened by the activities of the Bush mafia as we were in Europe.

Thank you Gore, for opening my eyes to the real America and Americans, and helping dispel my prejudices against all things Americana. May you rest in the peace you so fully deserve.

I wasn't familiar with the works of Gore Vidal so I googled him. It looks like he had an excellent career and I'm sure he will be greatly missed!

He was/is a giant, and imho a very wise man. I hope this will inspire me to get more familiar with his writing.

Hitchens and now Gore Vidal, it seems their understanding of what is, and the talk of it, is like a dying language. - Non of the younger ppl want to learn it, and all the great speakers of it are checking out. I hope I am wrong, please give me some reason not to worry.

Hitchin's God Is Not Great is one of my favourite books.

I wish I could provide some solace and say that there is a new generation who have picked up the reins but.....

and I dread the day we lose Chomsky :(
