Hi,
I have used MFC a lot and I have seen a problem that a lot of models seems to have. A reliable and cheap way of delivering videos to users that buy them.
Inspired by reading this post viewtopic.php?f=28&t=9970 I decided to create an account and share my idea.
First, about me. I choose to have my identity secret for now. I am very easy to identify once my name is out. But, in my every day life I own a mid-sized company that does hosting in our private facility. I am managing the tech staff and I basically built up this thing from ground up. This gives me a natural interest in.. all things nerdy.
And I have thought about a system for helping models doing this task. I have though of it over and over again. And this is my idea:
The model creates an account and pays a very small fee, most likely via PayPal or a card processor. Whatever makes most sense. This is mostly for fraud and piracy prevention. I am thinking a one off fee of $15 or something like that.
This gives access to a control panel in which video or picture-set uploading is possible. This is all normal, like any other site. Here comes the special part.
Whenever a video/pictureset/whatever is sold, the model can generate links that will have built in security:
- Each file can be downloaded a maximum of 2 times
- The first IP address that visits the link will be the only IP address from which the second download can be used
- The link will expire after a given amount of hours
Furthermore, the model will be able to view stats for each link. An approximate location of the download (area, nothing more detailed) and download count.
It should, of course, be possible to pre-create a bunch of links, to have ready when making "offers".
About security
This is priority number 1, and several security measures will be taken:
- All data transfer between model and server will be encrypted
- Certain video formats will be extensively supported. If that format is used, a small piece of data will be injected into the video file. This would practically mean, that in the event of finding the video somewhere on the internet, it would in many cases (because people are stupid, sorry) be possible to extract this information and track the issuance ID, from which the video was downloaded.
- There will be no need to give any personal information to the site, other than the payment, which will be handled by a third party and certified processor. This means that only in the event of law breaches, it will be able to have a warrant issued for the data from the card processor. Otherwise, the website will know nothing.
Funding
The system will be built by me in my spare time. The hosting of it will happen in the facility I own. Should it become very popular, that will of course cause a problem. In that event, the system would not allow for new registrations until someone cancelled their account, meaning that the service will only host a certain amount of users (models, not downloaders). I have a rackserver and a 8 TB disk shelf that was supposed to be used for something else, but the customer backed out last minute and it was bought.
The nerdy details are here for a reason. They are here, because if I was reading someone else coming up with this, I would think "who was to pay? How about disk space? Storage limitations?" and such. I want to make it clear, that this is possible to do.
So. Everyone - input? Would you use something like that? Ideas?
PS. It would certainly not be a cheap nor easy way for me to get videos. It would require many hours of my time and the equipment used is worth just around $10k. I have spent even more hours having great fun on MFC though - this is the motivating factor.
PPS. For any interested nerds: HP DL 380 G7 (Hexa core Xeon, 24G, 15K SAS 300G) with HP Storageworks D2600 with 6x2T installed in RAID6
