Stu was great but the drugs and gambling were out of control.

I think recently the goings-on in the poker world has shown a lot of unsavory aspects of the game (Full Tilt's collapse, etc). The amount of debt some of these player's are carrying is staggering. Daniel Negreanu's blog is pretty funny. He can go a bit over the top but his perseverance in pushing for responsibility is commendable.

I enjoy poker quite a lot when I play. I just don't play all that often. In my experience, I'm just good enough to typically embarrass my friends who only think they can play but no where near good enough to play against serious players. I play seriously enough to be frustrated by the play style of people on "free to play" online sites/tables/games but not seriously enough to want to put my own money on the line. >_>

One day maybe I'll find some other semi-serious players to play against so I can actually improve. I love watching some of the professional and amateur players with how they figure out their opponents' hands. Negreanu is definitely one of the most entertaining to watch for me because of that aspect. :)

i've yet to learn to play poker. i've been coached through a few games with friends and my grandparents (lulz) but haven't had many opportunities to really catch on. i have always had good luck with cards though and know i can bluff like a champ (or so i was told). i've read up and thought about trying to learn on free play sites, but i'm afraid i couldn't keep up. i can be a bit shy and i know i'll be self conscious of looking like a n00b. i want to be able to hit some tables for my birthday in a couple months and need to get better at black jack and learn to play poker... any recommendations for a way to ease into it without scaring myself off haha?

Started playing about 5/6 years ago, when it seemed it was one of those things you didn't admit to "the lads" that you don't know how to play. Started off pretty socially with around 8/10 friends chucking in £20 each and top 3 places paying, few beers and an all round good night, more of a laugh and less expensive than a night out

Played a bit online, varying degrees of success but I could never find the right balance between the money being expendable enough that i was not very savvy when I played to it meaning so much that I was scared stiff of losing anything which is why i packed it in in the end as I just was not enjoying online play

Something i would love to get back into though

Absolutely I do! You can sign up with Carbon Poker for free and play their Free Roll tourneys. I would definitely recommend that, as opposed to Facebook poker when it comes to practice, because most FB players really don't know what they are doing and are not going to make the same plays as your opponents will at the tables in actual card rooms.
Like anywhere on the internet (and IRL for that matter) there will be A holes and trolls, so if you're feeling self conscience and think that some ass talking shit about the way you just played a hand might get you feeling discouraged, then simply turn off the "player chat" feature. I recommend this for in the beginning though, because unlike playing online, when you're playing live in the card room, you don't have this option. So I feel it's a goo idea to turn it on some times and train yourself to not let them beat you down mentally.

Another really important tip that I feel I can't stress enough is this... fold Fold FOLD! Patience is KEY to playing this game! The majority of what you will be doing is FOLDING. A common mistake that new players make is not being selective enough with their starting hands. I hear ppl say all the time that the one thing that gets them into trouble when playing Hold Em' is that they get board and start getting involved with more hands then they should. I never get board at the tables anymore because I learned this other very important thing... When you're not playing a hand, you need to pay attention to how the others play! Doing this will keep your mind from wondering, and it's something that you need to do anyways.

Another thing I do is I study. Just like any profession, if you want to be successful, you go to school and do your home work. Now even if you aren't trying to go pro, it's still a smart thing to do. I read books and poker magazines on a regular basis and I take notes. I keep a journal of how my tourneys went, if I did well or if I did poorly. And I write down what happened and try to learn either from my mistakes or remember what I did that helped me play well. I also go to a lot of poker websites too.
Here's a really good site I just found that I think will help you out. It has a lot of very good advice for beginners with articles that are easy to understand.

Good Luck, and if you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask. :thumbleft:

Also, when you go to play for the first time, ( for cash, in a card room/casino ) remember to let the players and dealer know its your first time 'live'((they will know anyway's) and believe me, they will assist you as much as possible, answering questions, giving you your options (position, check, bet, call etc.) just to keep their game on track. Use the dealer as often as needed till you understand for yourself. Somethings should come easy and some may take a bit longer to understand. GL

You have probably seen this already, but I am posting just in case. It looked like something that would interest you Poker_Babe.

wow, well 4 all she knows, she could have got her aces cracked and been out of the tournament all together if she played that hand.

I used to play poker quite regularly. I would mostly play online. However, occasionally I would enter live tournaments or get together with friends to play. I loved it…. However, gambling took over my life and I ended up quitting cold turkey about 2 years back after one particularly bad night...

This is the last hand I ever played (Heads-up Texas Hold'em):

I was dealt pocket A's.
The turn was 4,A,7
The flop was an 7

At this point I had a full house with 3 A's and 2 7's so I was pretty confident in my hand and started to bet aggressively. Before the river the total pot was about $2,300 (this is the largest single hand I had ever played).

The river was a 4. :(

…..the bastard made quad 4's on the river! :o
