If you search "twitter lock" tweets you can see the on-going site panic/randomness
"Retweet if you survived the twitted lock out"
"Twitter why did you lock my account for saying I wanted to kill myself?"
"TWITTER I APOLOGIZE FOR WHAT I DID! PLEASE UNLOCK MY ACCOUNT"
I think this is Twitters attempt at unlocking and protecting accounts. My nerves are at an all time high. I DONT WANT ISIS TO GET ME or something insane.
They try that with me i guess i'm done on twitter. I have no mobile phone to put in there and i wouldn't if i did. Hate when sites try to gather more information than they need.

The reason they do that is for a 'two-step' authentication, which makes sense - with that, it goes from 'something you know' (the username+password combination) to 'something you have (phone) and something you know (username+password)'. Honestly, I would expect that more sites will start strongly suggesting using strong authentication via this method (or other methods, like U2F, which is supported in Chrome and I believe is being added to Firefox and Safari). And usually when they do that, the responsible companies make it clear that adding the phone number to their account database is only for this purpose and not for any other purposes such as advertising.
Some hackers hacked into some Twitter accounts and as a precaution Twitter is updating some security stuff causing some glitches. I don't think terrorist really would care about a few phone numbers from civilians
