Usually somewhere between flippant and glib.
Looking forward to it but totally bummed gymnast Shawn Johnson won't be there.

Just three weeks before the Olympic Trials, Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson retired from gymnastics. She cited a knee injury that she sustained skiing while not competing in gymnastics.

"I still have the heart, drive, and desire to compete and help the USA at the London Olympics," said Johnson. "Unfortunately, it has become obvious that my left knee is not able to sustain the demands of gymnastics any longer. All I can do now is gracefully retire and thank everyone who has believed in me and my journey."

She walks away from the sport with an Olympic gold and three silvers. Her dynamic routines in Beijing helped the U.S. earn a silver team medal, and she earned three golds at the 2007 world championships.

I'm looking forward to the mighty Great Britain crushing all before them and picking up in excess of 5 gold medals

NOOOOOOO! I was really looking forward to seeing her again. I was hoping maybe this year she would do the Gold All Around as Nastia got it last time. I know last i looked they hadnt even picked the Olympic team for them yet though. Im really sad for her. I know All Around is always their main goal, then individual medals, then team. Im sorry her dream wont come true for her.
On another note i did see and interview Nastia give about her coming back again. Shes still eligible to and on the right teams for it still. So if her body is holding out im sure she will be back at least.

*bumping this thread since I'm just now noticing it*

I used to love watching the summer Olympics with my grandmom...specifically the gymnastics portion with Dominique Dawes, Dominique Moceanu, etc. I think it's amazing to watch.

Pretty disappointed David Beckham has been left out of the GB Olympic "soccer" I know hes knocking on a bit but he was one of the reasons London got the games in the first place and is still one of the icons of the world game

I'm hoping Canada will not be embarrassed again this year with only 3 gold!

Wait, why do you set your expectation so low? Great Britain won 19 gold at the last Summer Olympics (47 medals in total). It's the winter Olympics that you suck at. :P

The one who gives me goosebumps this year is Gabby Douglas. The height that girl gets in her floor routine is almost super human. She's all around solid too from what I've seen, not to mention totally adorable.

Gabrielle Douglas, 16, the sprite-like gymnast who could give the US women a chance to win its first Olympic team gold since the Magnificent Seven (Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Jaycie Phelps, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu and Kerri Strug) earned the honor in 1996.

YES! Kerri Strug is the one whose name I was trying to remember the other day...lol. I remember watching the Summer Olympics with my grandmom back then, and Kerri had injured herself yet still proceeded with her gymnastics routine and did an excellent job.

I really enjoy watching the Olympic competitions, but am I the only one that dislikes any of the events that use subjective judging? Gymnastics and diving I dislike because of the scoring systems. I do like to see the athleticism involved in those sports but the subjective nature turns me off to the actual competition.

QUESTION FOR NON-AMERICANS

Do you get tired (mad, irritated, etc.) when the USA wins a medal since we win so many?

I used to hate it when East Germany or the old USSR would win medals (always thought they cheated). But now the USA and China seem to be the perrenial medal leaders.

Though I am loyal to my country, I will cheer for underdogs and athletes with great backstories. But sometimes I'll think that we've won enough.

Just curious. What do you think?

I'm not very patriotic (just because my parents happened to fuck in England 27 years ago doesn't make my country any better than anyone else's, ya know?) and I'm not really interested in athletics so, nope. I'll root for England in footballing competitions 'cos I like football (and all that brings me is tears :() but that's about it. I'm not fussed if we (England/Great Britain) get trounced at the Olympics, or in cricket, or any other sport, really.

I have also never given a shit about the Olympics, Of course I like to see GB/England do well in any sport they participate in but I, as Bob does, reserve my passion for the National Football team, although how we can give the world a game and then be utterly schite at it is a different story

I'm not a fan of the Olympics which will make the next thing I say make a little more sense: HOLY HELL THERE WAS A GYMNAST FROM MY HOME CITY! How cool is that nonsense?

I can't believe one Olympian was banned over this Tweeted Joke: "So many Africans in Greece at least West Nile mosquitoes will eat homemade food."

Ok, so it's stupid funny, but if the IOC is gonna be so damned strict, perhaps a warning may have been in order before distinguishing someone's life long dream over something so stupid. She's pretty damn hot too!

Yes, very strange that it wasn't even an option to watch live since NBC is televising every single event on their multiple channels and the internet. I had read that the opening and closing ceremonies usually get the most viewers on TV so they wanted to save something for prime time US television.

Wow!!! I feel sorry for any Americans watching the ceremony as a lot of what goes on is very much 'in jokes'
The whole thing got a little too much after the first couple of hours and that's without adverts. From what I heard the coverage is 5 hrs for you guys with adverts :? I really feel for you guys

No, it shows the investiment that the USA injects on sports.

Honestly??

IT WAS FUCKING EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Danny Boyle delivered a quintessentially British Masterpiece
It shows what Briton has projected on the world..

Nope. Not at all. US Olympians are not government funded/made like the old East Germany/USSR athletes. Precisely the reason the official threads by Ralph Lauren were made in China. Sponsor of US Olympics. Take the money where you can get it.

All about the $$$. NBC can cut away whenever they want to get in all those commercials (advertising $$$) without missing anything if on tape delay.
