What do you girls tell your family you do for a living?

Before MFC I was unemployed for a long time (aside from babysitting and photography/video gigs here and there) and as far as my family knows I still am. Not only would I like to let them know I am no longer freeloading off of my boyfriend, but eventually I will have a new computer, new tv, new sofa, new bed, etc. that I will need to explain.

Most of my family lives within an hour or two, so simply saying I waitress here or cashier here will not work, because they'll try to visit me at work. I've thought of saying I work at a call center, or a variety of online jobs. If they perceive my job as an easy way to make money online, though, they'll probably want in.

My father has surprised visited me twice recently, screwing up my camming plans. He assumes I'm sitting at home bored out of my mind while my boyfriend is at work. So I'm thinking I need an alias job with set hours so that my family knows not to bother me during certain times. I'm also working on creating a set schedule for camming, and starting to cam later at night to avoid this problem.

So, tell me what your situation is and offer any advice you may have!

:h:

I don't have an alias job (I have a legit job in addition to camming) but I do have an entire family of "random pop-in'ers", and to combat that I park my vehicle around the corner some distance away from my house. That way they'll presume I'm not home and not bother :) This has only bitten me in the ass once when my mum called my cell to see where I was and I said I was out shopping and she said, "great! I'll meet you there!" and I said, "uh no I'm on my way home" and she said, "great! I'll wait here!". I was such a dork, I snuck out my backdoor, jumped the fence and then walked around the corner, got my car and pretended to "come home" from shopping lol.

ahaha, Lemon! Sounds like you need a garage! >_<

I don't have a car so I could just not answer my phone and then later say I was out, but since my family has to drive some distance to see me I'd feel bad.

EDIT: I don't know why I said garage, as useful as they are in this situation you would've be super screwed, haha.

Before I started MFC, I was working Burger King...

My parents still think I work Burger King. x.x

how about answering calls for certain doctor's that need the call forwarding service. all of the calls are forwarded to your home so if you are there all of the time, it's not unheard of, and if someone is visiting they are not getting any calls that evening. :twocents-02cents: can't hurt and it would explain any extra income and why you are almost always home

I don't lie when asked. Luckily, my family doesn't ask many questions about my financial life anymore, but they did once believe I was a drug dealer :woops: My last job before going to beauty school was managing a headshop/porn store. So, no one is shocked by my career wandering anymore.

I have the same problem. I used to make up jobs (bar work etc) but my parents kept asking too many questions & I hated having to make up stories to tell (& I'm crap at lying) so now I tell them I'm looking for work. I think they think I am currently living off benefits...I haven't said that exactly, but they now think I'm not working & it's the only explanation they will come up with. I wish I could tell them that I've never taken a penny from the country & have earned & paid for everything myself but I can't. Their dissapointment in me is easier for me to take than them knowing what I do. They are VERY old fashioned, and they wouldn't be able to handle the truth. When I first told my mother I was working behind a bar, she was shocked & went on & ON about how I shouldn't be around the kind of men who go to bars and drink alcohol, so dancing & camming would NOT go down well lol.
Every so often, I contemplate telling them the truth (maybe toning it down a bit, no need to mention pvts lol) but my sisters are sure it would destroy them & that they would probably never talk to me again.
Anyway, maybe something you could say is that you do temp work...so you wouldn't be workng in the same place for too long.
When I started camming several years ago before I started dancing, I told my parents (who have NO idea how to even turn on a computer lol) I was offering an online counselling service that charged per minute...it was *sort of* true lol but I don't think they bought it. I don't even know if that sort of thing exists!
Anyhoo, good luck & if in doubt, move your car & turn your phone off & lock the doors lol

That's what I do...you will feel bad the first few times but then after that they will learn they have to call & actually check with you first that you are in & able to see them. They wont want to travel to see you without knowing for sure you are available after the first coupla times they turn up & you're "out".

Best thing I can think of...telephone psychic lol. You sit at home and wait for people to call you to tell them when they're going to fall in love for $4.95 a minute

I suppose you're right! Also, sorry about your situation, it sounds even trickier than mine. I know what you mean about their disappointment being easier to handle than knowing what you do, though.

All of these suggestions of jobs where I take calls at home don't really work, because it's something I could easily do while they're here. *shrug* I'll think it through, though.

Thanks for all of the replies so far!

You're worried about them dropping by the work place? Tell them you work the night shift, in a building where you need a badge to get in the front door.

Night shift call center work?

That's a good idea, bawsky. But If I'm going to say I work at a physical place I need to make sure the place exists and that it's somewhere they wouldn't be able to CALL me at, either. But thus far work at home jobs or a call center seem like my best options.

They are going to be very nosy about my new job, especially since I have been unemployed for so long. If I don't call and go on and on about whatever I'm doing they'll know something is up.

I've also toyed with the idea of saying I'm a moderator on forums/chat rooms. They are computer savvy but they're not going to try to snoop into whatever forums I'm using. I don't know how common paid moderator jobs are, but either do my parents! :p

EDIT: I've also talked about selling cookies online (and have on occasion). Last time I saw my dad he mentioned the name Lady Bakes and I had a mini heart attack before realizing it's the name on my email. >_< I just told him I've been selling baked goods and that was that. But it would be hard to believe I'm making enough from that to really support myself and buy the things I'll be buying. Plus they'd expect me to have baked goods in supply for them to try, and I don't get much baking time these days.

Why not get an actual real part-time job, and then just blame all of your MFC income on that? Preferably, a job that you can work minimal hours while your family thinks you work a lot of hours.

For example, be a jewelry party lady. Sure, you might have to throw one party for your family to convince them, but big deal.

Benefits:
-Odd schedule
-No fixed business location
-Can't call you at non-existent fixed location
-It's believable that you can make a ton of money from selling shit

Bawsky, I do believe you're a genius. Fuck, I've thought about doing Passion Parties before and now I can actually afford to get started. My parents aren't TOTAL prudes and the idea of me selling sex toys won't freak them out like the idea of their little girl touching herself for pervs would.

I HAVE been looking for a regular job and still am not opposed to one, but the whole reason I ended up on MFC was because finding said job wasn't working out. I love being camwhore and it pays better than any shitty retail job, so I've mostly stopped looking.

Or one of those sex toy parties where women sell dildos to other women, not only does it explain the job but you might actually have the props to back up your story

i kept it very vague and told mom this on her birthday "i moderate an online forum and i stick to a strict schedule." rotfl. she gave me a funny look but said that it was fine with her because she remembers how well i did with my editing service. we tell all our family members that i moderate several forums online and that if any of them try to visit unexpectedly they will get ignored. this has happened many times with roomie's parents trying to visit and harass me. i just don't answer the door and after 30 minutes they either leave or security notices and escorts them away.

I signed up to do Mary Kay a couple years back but didn't really get the ball rolling with it at all. Good stuff, though.

Yes, that's what I meant by Passion Parties!

Yeah and it's not even a complete lie, you are demonstrating sex toys, just you're doing it online which in one sense is better than doing it in person!

A job often done at home is medical or court reporter transcriber. You listen to the recording and type it all up. It would be a good cover job because you can always say you're not allowed to talk about what you're transcribing for privacy reasons.

I realize they might eventually find out, but I'd rather hold off as long as I can, who wouldn't?

I don't know why you say everyone always finds out, several of the models replying to this thread have been camwhores for some time (at least to my understanding) and none have said "Oh fuck it, Lady, my family knows anyways." I'm not living a some dream world where I think I nobody will ever know, but that doesn't mean I need to broadcast it.

At any rate, I at least want it to be a secret until my grandma dies. I want her to go thinking of me as her little angel. She is the greatest women to ever live and the last I want to do is disappoint her.

Tell em you're a software programmer - the only thing anyone ever asks is "Where can I get a cheap laptop".

You can work from home, be in front of a computer for 18 hours a day and really really no one wants to know anything about your job
