My Niece/Goddaughters 1st birthday is in two days and I don't know what to get as a gift. I already bought her a toy and a couple cute outfits. However, I want to get her something special that she will want to keep as she grows older.

I was thinking of getting a pendant or an engraved picture frame. However, it appears she is already getting both those gifts from others. I want to try to get her something original. Any ideas? My price range is $300. Unfortunately since I left this to the last minute it will have to be something I can get at a mall as I will not have time to order something online.

Did any of you receive a gift as a baby/child which you have kept with you into adulthood?

Cosmetic surgery vouchers? 8-)

My sister and I received silver bracelets when we were baptised from our God parents and I remember asking my mum to look at them as we grew up and being really excited about them finally fitting our then dinky wrists! They were really lovely gifts.

This might not be super exciting for a 1 year old, but my favorite childhood gift was a very cool handcrafted bookshelf. I had it through college and a couple of places I lived after. Now it's in storage at my Dad's house until I stop being a gypsy and buy a place.

Heh... I think my mother covered the gifts for my nephew for his first and second birthday. She's pretty good at that stuff. I just reimbursed her. For his 3rd birthday, I got a Cars (the movie) themed CD player and some kid-safe Fisher Price headphones (with automatic volume limiting to protect his ears) so he could listen to his own music on car trips. They still use the headphones with his DVD player. Makes me happy to see a gift for a child still being used over 2 years later. It's tough at that age.

If it's not my kiddo then I get something that's loud, lights up, makes noise and if possible moves. Then again, I don't like any of the parents that my kid knows. :-D

This may sound pretty cheesy, but I think those Record-A-Story books are adorable!

They have some with different themes...Cars...Disney Princesses...Winnie the Pooh...Classic children's nursery rhymes, etc. When you first purchase it, you press a button to record yourself reading the story aloud. This would be especially good if you and your niece/god-daughter are very close.

They have some of them at The Hallmark Store (the store might be in your local mall), and I've seen them at CVS and Walgreens.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! :)

My Niece is quite spoiled so she already has a lot of the items suggested including that cool recordable storybook which my Mom bought for her, a book shelf built by her Grandfather, and a CD set up by her parents. A nice personalize silver bracelet may work so I will see what I can find at the mall tomorrow.

My Mom called me about an hour ago all excited because she thinks she found the perfect gift for me to buy. She went into a Swarovski Crystal store and saw that they had a lot of crystal Disney characters for sale. I'm going to go check them out tomorrow as well.

I was just looking on the website and this Winnie the Pooh crystal looks really cool. My niece loves her Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal.

I buy these things for my son all the time, although I doubt he'll appreciate them the way a girl would when he's older.

My gram bought me personalized gifts when I was a kid that I still have (most of these things are 25 years old or more) and I love to pull them out and admire them. I have a personalized birthday tape and personalized holiday-themed books as well. I think girls love these types of things many years later.

Something like the Dr.Seuss collection would be really cool, any of those books that kids read and re-read would be really awesome, especially a whole collection. Then again, I was a childhood bookworm.

Not only is this a great idea, but it's something that parents can also appreciate as it saves them a bundle on kids books that are pretty pricey these days!

My shopping trip was very successful but I think I may have gone a little overboard. :-D

I ended up getting getting 2 Dr. Seuss beginner book collections which have 10 books in total. I think I will split this collection up and give her a few each year.

I also got her the Winnie the Pooh crystal and one of my favourite toys as a child...

This is gonna make my family sound like a bunch of hillbillies, which is partially true but all the kids in my family received bottles of age-able liquor around their births to enjoy on their 18th birthdays and all the boys had playboys from the month/year they were born.

Sadly, my birthday scotch was swiped by some hooligans during an ill fated house party one of my older siblings had when I was still pretty young but still, neat idea.

My FAVORITE thing to get little girls right now is ridiculously elaborate princess tiaras for wicked cheap online http://www.tiaraconnection.com/

I don't have any kids, and I don't know if I ever will, but if that ever happens you are invited to his or her birthday party. I expect booze, porn, and tiaras (Isn't that a new show on TLC? Frankie?)

There are four things I still have from my before 5 years.

1 teddy bear
1 home-made crib-quilt (that served as my blankie through foster care)
1 teddy-shaped silver piggy-bank with my name engraved on a plaque held by the bear
1 silver jewelry box
