I'm moving tomorrow and I assume it will be a little while before I'm able to get Comcast at my new place. Anyone of you tech savvy people know an easier way to piggyback off of a neighbors wifi without having to use Linux to crack the network key???

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

Don't. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty pissed if someone was cracking my password and stealing my bandwidth and fucking up my placement on SM and costing me money, even if it was only for a few days.

Transfer your internet in advance. Cam from coffeeshops for a few days if you must. It's never okay to try to crack someone's password.

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

Maybe you could introduce yourself to your new neighbours, bake them a cake or something, and politely ask if you might borrow their wi-fi for a couple of days until you get yours set up. It's better to be on the up-and-up with these things.

Failing that, yeah find a coffee shop or park next to a place that has free wi fi or something.

Awesome idea!

I remember a girl I used to cam with told me that when she moved in she noticed her neighbours had set their wifi name to "BRINGJACKDANIELSFORWIFIPASSTOAPT#'whateveritwas"

SO she showed up with whiskey, they were like "WOAH, no ones ever done it yet...its been like that for a year" and gave her the password LOL

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

You "assume" comcast will take a while? They are pretty quick but you put more effort into finding out of you can steal someones internet than if you could get your own service?
Lot's of people have home offices these days, your actions could be much more harmful than you think.

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

As others have said, it's unethical, yes. It's also very difficult. I've used open wireless networks belonging to neighbours. Never attempted to crack a password though. There's tons of information if you know how to formulate a Google search. When I looked into it, I came to the conclusion that it was too difficult to do really.

My neighbours upstairs were kind enough to offer me their password until I got my own sorted when I moved into this flat. Maybe mention it if you have the chance to talk to neighbours? If you're desperate, it can't hurt to ask politely.

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

its not impossible and its not really that difficult, the software does the work but it is lengthy. And in that same amount of time you could go to the store, buy cookie dough, bake some cookies and bribe a neighbor. I know if a hot woman brought me some fresh baked cookies I'd gladly give wifi password =)

So would I unless it caused to much buffering when watching pr0n, then I would boot her ass off...

Re: Anyone know how to crack a wifi password using windows??

Yeah you guys are right. IDK, I was thinking that if it was only temporary it wouldn't be wrong... but yeah, it is unethical. What can I say, I start to loose all my senses when my internet connection is threatened.

Think of it this way, if you ask nicely to borrow your neighbor's wifi then 1) you've now met your new neighbors, 2) you're starting off on a good foot by asking nicely and 3) you'll be able to see if you have awesome neighbors or people you'll have to avoid for the rest of the time you live there. :twocents-02cents:

Depending on what type of place you're moving into, you could ask your leasing office/landlord if they have any wifi you could borrow. I'm not sure about most places but our leasing office offers temporary wifi access to new residents. The only downside is you have to sit in their office while you use it.

What's the point in cracking/stealing wi-fi?!?!?! Just cruise on down to the local McDonald's where they'll give you a password with your McFlurry. Find a cozy, dark corner of the play place and start strippin'.

Poker_Babe has seen the error of her ways, I salute her for that.

What if someone is not protecting their wifi? Fair game? Personally for me, that is still a no no. Maybe they have a limited amount of bandwidth and my sharing would put them over their limits or something. Oh, and before someone says "if they are stupid enough not to protect it, they deserve it" an unlocked door is not an invitation to steal. :twocents-02cents:

It's not the worst crime in the world. I've deliberately left my wifi unprotected at times. I've used my neighbour's too. In my old place, I could get wifi from my neighbour in my bedroom before I had a wireless router myself. A little bit of light web surfing late at night on someone else's connection isn't so bad. Pushing lots of data through someone else's connection by camming or torrents or whatever would be a bit cheeky on the other hand.

I've been lucky finding open wifi connections the couple of times I've rented apartments without internet in Barcelona at holiday time. I got the impression that there were a lot more unprotected networks in Spain than here in the UK maybe? Are the Spanish a generous and trusting culture, or just not clued up on network security? I dunno. :)

Most of the time I run across an unencrypted wifi, they've also left their router with the default admin username/password.

I will admit to temporarily setting MAC filters on open networks like that. Usually my conscience overtakes my sense of mayhem shortly thereafter.

I'm sure I've seen a script that serves an upside down jpg of every web page requested by unregistered MAC addresses. The stranger gets the internet, but it's mysteriously upside down

Near where I used to live they did an experiment. A laptop, the ability to broadcast wifi (most laptops have it these days) without encryption (allowing anyone to connect) and a generic name given to it (to make people believe it's a free wifi hotspot for use). They used what is commonly referred to as a "man in the middle" attack.

In a few hours they'd harvested login details galore to a wide variety of things... Whilst it is possible to prevent MitM attacks, I think it was various 3rd party aps on mobile phones that generally did not provide the required protection which cause it to happen. I also think most of it occurred as people had their mobiles stupidly set to connect to any available wifi.

I can't remember exactly now, and can't be arsed to search for it, but the gist is that someone can be nabbing your details ;)
