Usually somewhere between flippant and glib.
Since early this morning the snow has been coming down, it is nearly waist high and is still falling down. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. The wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. If it gets much worse, I may have to let her in.

I have no idea what you are talking about. If this keeps up I'm gonna have to turn the AC back on...yeesh hehe

Kinda hate the cold and love it at the same time. It's comforting to wrap up warm, but I'm dangerously close to slicing my t-shirt on my nips every morning.

I think I get that Seasonal Affect Disorder. Maybe it's psychosomatic, but the lack of the endorphins attributable to the sun's magic rays can be a bitch. I definitely tend to be happier in the Summer. That said, snow can be kinda cool. Last year we had the mother of all snowball fights in the town square on our lunch break. A fair few innocents got caught in the crossfire and some of them even joined in. That was cool.

Idk about all of you but the cold makes my dry skin so itchy! I have to lotion like crazy and when I get too cold my fingers and toes turn blue. I need a personal, portable falangies warmer or something because my dog doesn't like sitting on my feet. The cold showers suck too, I miss hot water in the summer!

*and STILL I am whining about how cold it is...and I grew up in Nebraska where you had to heat up your car key with a lighter just to unlock the damn door...
What a wuss I am now.

I always say, temperature is relative to what you're acclimated to. Cold for one is warm for another, and vice versa. Don't feel bad for being uncomfortable when the temperatures dip below/rise above what your body is used to! Shiver with pride at 50F, and sweat with a smile at 80F if that's not what you're used to!

I live in the frozen tundra of eastern Ontario, Canada. Currently it's -9'C (15'F) with a freezing rain warning in effect. This is chilly but not bitterly cold. When it gets to -30'C (-22'F), that's cold. In the summertime anything above 30'C (86'F) is extremely uncomfortable for me, while in warmer climates that temperature is cold enough to throw a sweater and jeans on.

I live in Germany, and December started out mild here, after a disturbingly dry November and October (no rain at all in like 6 weeks, sunshine every day, it was creepy).

BUT the night from Monday to Tuesday it started snowing. I was really excited when I looked out of the window and noticed it. But I live in a big city with lots of traffic. So when I took the train to school in the afternoon, all the snow had already turned into water puddles or grey wet stuff. ...only 12 hours after it had started snowing -.-'
Of course it's still incredibly cold outside (3-4 degrees over 0°C), with drizzling rain every now and then.
I hate the cold so much. I can't believe I have to endure another 3 months until it gets warmer again. No matter what I'm wearing, it never seems to be enough, I always get goosebumps when I go outside, and my whole upper body tenses up, which is really bad for my already chronically tense neck and shoulders. It happens even though I'm wearing a scarf, a pullover with a T-Shirt underneath and a winter coat...

Sorry for the long rant, I just really. HATE. the weather right now. :angry4: :-x

I swear to God, nothing is more depressing than seeing piles of grey watery nothing where there used to be clean white snow, combined with the kind of cold that makes you want to cry and crawl back into bed and go into hibernation.

ROFL eastern Ontario... Frozen tundra? You are kidding right?
So I was curious, and I googled "frozen tundra eastern ontario" and this was second on the list...
"This is not some frozen tundra! We have the same limestone soil as Burgundy, and Alsatian-style crisp white wines! In other words: We’re a real wine region!"

I just thought that was funny...

and to get back on topic, here's a video from the BBC's program Extreme World: Hot and Cold for those of you living in the 'extremes' of winterlands...;)

I know a guy from Point Hope Alaska who tells me the natives there survive so well because of their diet. He says that eating all the blubber they do thickens your your blood, whereas eating fruit thins your blood out.
It depends on WHAT you eat, to keep warm out here. Eskimo food has some mighty different properties than anything you have eaten to alter your metabolisim. and this stuff works.

quaq is the eskimo name for eating a hunters breakfast ! quaq (co ak) is raw frozen caribou meat, or raw frozen fish. This is a hunters breakfast. this is what you eat before you go out for the day or if your out and your cold, then you need to eat this type food. It will make you much warmer. At 30 below zero, people are talking clothes off because they are just too hot !!

Plus, it's a dry cold which really does make a HUGE difference.

He invited me to one of their 3 day whaling festivals in June, but I couldn't make it and he had to leave there last year. It's quite the party I'm told. SOMEDAY!

Oh ya, In the Inupiaq language there are no O's or E's, so there's no such thing as an Igloo. Therefore the correct spelling of THAT WORD is Iglu

Iglu = one dwelling place.

Iglut = two dwelling places.

Igluk = three or more dwellings.

ever since the begining of time thousands of years ago, The Inupiaq people have always constructed an iglu out of whale bones and sod ! These ancient ruins are all over the place and still visible here today. and in many villages. From Kotzebue just over the Arctic circle clear up to Barrow and beyond, Kaktovik.

That concludes the lesson for today, lol, but I've got some crazy stories from him and it's a rather fascinating life they lead there.

 That is the first time I have ever heard the expression "dry cold" before, and it totally makes sense...I just hadn't really thought about the cold that way. Only the heat--when I lived in Phoenix my family would always freak out about how hot it would get in phoenix and they just didnt understand how different 100 degrees in Arizona is compared to 100 degrees in Nebraska...the humidity makes a big difference! Strange that I never thought about the cold that way though.

And I love hearing stories like that, I wish I had more friends like you do, Bocefish!

I am sitting watching drizzly rain outside and a dull leaden grey sky... which is crap. This time last week, after our second snowfall of the month, it was bright, cold, blue skies as far as the eye could see and the snowfield sparkled in the morning sun as if carpeted by billions of diamonds. Even when it is cold and bitter outside I find that incredibly beautiful to see.

Personally I don't mind the extremes.. whether its 82F in the shade or 10f with a foot of snow (like for Christmas day 2009 and also 2010) all you do is adjust. As Billy Connolly once said: "There is no such thing in Scotland as bad weather... only the wrong type of clothes."

Forecast for Christmas Day here in Scotland.. 12C, wild, wet and windy... shame I wanted more snow! :-D

It's been uncharacteristically warm all week with sunny skies and no bad weather. Today, boom! Freezing rain, black skies, no sun whatsoever and frozen mud everywhere. :( I'm bummed out now because the weather is playing catch up and is probably going to knock out the power or freeze the pipes.

Slush ;) Hate slush... :angry4:

THAT'S the word I was looking for!
Sorry ^^'

Another slush hater here, lol. If it's going to be cold, there might as well be snow on the ground and I prefer it to be cold enough that it actually stays white until spring/breakup.
The only good thing about slush is when you throw it at someone they can't whipe it off as easly and get wet. I've stopped throwing it at people though because my siblings thought it was funny to stick it down my shirt. :icon-cry: It's funny when it happens to other people though.

Slush fights are never fair, beware of the down the pants move, lol

My new favorite music vid:

One of my weirdest winter weather experiences was while living in Washington state near Puget Sound. We had a sudden onslaught of freezing rain that adhered immediately to everything it hit, including trees. Hearing HUGE mature tree limbs succomb to the additional weight and crash down in the otherwise silence of the night was one of the eeriest things I've ever experienced. Limbs the size of trucks were crashing down all over and in every direction.

Mother Nature is a fierce and unforgiving force.
