I just read a post on dailykos.com, that said there's a new deal going through now that gave the Republicans basically everything they demanded except for a balanced budget amendment and some of them are still balking, it's fucking ridiculous.

Because it's not about what's best for America for them. It's power first, country second. They're just too fucking stupid to realize that by doing this, they're fucking their party over just as much as they're fucking the voters.

But it sounds like there is a deal now. Republicans get a lot of what they want, especially no tax increases. Translation: they got Obama by the balls.

Actually, it's money first, power second, country third or lower, but other than that I agree with ya.

The only good thing about that deal is that it's finally over and the debt ceiling will be raised, everything else about it is horrid.

I don't hate this country, I just hate the vast majority of people in it, some more often than others.

People in the U.S. usually get the government they deserve. If you didn't vote, you only have yourself to blame. More smoke and mirror bovine excrement.

IMO if those teabagger douches would put their country at risk for the sake of political points scoring and their own egos, that's tantamount to treason and they should answer for it.

Just out of curiosity, why are they treasonous douches?

if any political group were to hold the national interest to ransom for their own gain and political leverage, with full knowledge of what the result could be, and potentally having their nation held over a barrel to a foreign sovereign nation as their main creditor (a fucking global superpower no less), they are putting their nation at risk.

A basic definition of treason:

Oran's Dictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as "...[a]...citizen's actions to help a foreign government overthrow, make war against, or seriously injure the [parent nation]. In many nations, it is also often considered treason to attempt or conspire to overthrow the government, even if no foreign country is aided or involved by such an endeavour."

To put national security in jeopardy (and the national and global economy CERTAINLY puts your nation's security at risk) is a borderline situation...but on one side of that line is treason.

From what I understand:

The Tea Party movement is an American political movement that is generally recognized as conservative and libertarian, and has sponsored protests and supported political candidates since 2009. It endorses reduced government spending, opposition to taxation in varying degrees, reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit, and adherence to an originalist interpretation of the United States Constitution.

I'm neither a tea party member, a dem, rep, or libertarian, but the above ideology sounds pretty damned rational to me. The fact they didn't budge on their position doesn't make them treasonous, at least not in my mind.

I don't belong to any political party, either. If I'm pinned down, I'll admit to being an Idealist with Populist leanings (no, I'm not a pop-idol), but I vehemently oppose a label stuck on me. I also agree that the "Mission Statement", you posted makes a lot of sense. Problem is in the execution of said mission.

Napoleon, at times, had some good ideas. Some of Marx's tenents of Socialism made sense. Communism for pete's sake, made sense...at least the "work for the common good" business.

It's not that the thoughts and ideas are bad...it's the execution. BTW, the Republicans don't have a monopoly on this.

But to hold the country hostage for the sake of those beliefs and they act like this is the first time the idea of a debt ceiling being raised is the first time it's ever been brought up when Reagan raised the debt ceiling 17 times. Which causes me to believe that the only reason they dragged their feet as much as they have on something that has been done for decades is simply because they want the economy to be as horrible as it can be up until the 2012 election. This whole debate isn't financial, it's about ideals and political gain. Are they going to do the same thing every single time? That won't get old.

In Wisconsin a lot of tea party republicans were elected into congress out of frustration and because people agreed with the beliefs and now many of these elected officials are all up for recall because what they said their beliefs are and what they are trying to do and are two completely different things.

Each party had their no-deal sticking points and I think it's a little unfair to lay the blame at the feet of the tea party. There is plenty of blame to go around. Both reps and dems grew government to ridiculous levels. At least somebody is finally saying enough is enough and sticking to it. IMO, Obama's poor leadership is why this got to the point it did. The debt ceiling issue was obviously coming an should have been taken care of a long time ago.

I think having a pseudo cowboy in the white house for 8 years and watching how he would barge right in act first ask questions later approach has has really left the definition of what being a leader is a bit unclear. I look at Obama and see a president who doesn't just make decisions on his gut and then have to retract later after the facts come out, who will try and compromise and and make decisions based on long term instead of just short term gain which in the 24 hour instant gratification news cycle makes him look weak.

G dubya had how many debt ceilings get past in his run and yet I never heard anyone give two shits BUT NOW this is the end all be all? This just screams that the only reason anyone gives a shit now is to grasp at anything to make the president look bad. Obama has been damned if he did damned if he didnt since he was elected. He could cure cancer and they would ask him what took him so long.

Obama isn't bad because he says one thing, learns facts and then changes his mind.
Obama IS bad because he says one thing, can't deal with the Rep. party and then rolls over and gives them whatever they want. He may try and compromise, but the only one compromising is him and his party.

It's amusing to watch all this unfold from another country :D
It appears to be like a clichéd 1950's esque movie scene - a game of chicken, racing to the cliff top.
No-one wants to drive over the edge, but they want the others to believe they're willing to in order to get what they want.

At least, that's how it looked from the armchair. If it doesn't "pass" (or whatever you call it) i'd be stunned :D

That's basically it in a nutshell Zoomer. Political posturing to the extreme, but the tea party means it when they say they have had enough of the same old BS.

The Obama administration had political leverage back in December when he extended the Bush tax cuts, yet failed to recognize the severity of the looming debt ceiling issue that was coming like a freight train on steroids.

Transpersonal Identity Disorder.
This is the from first paragraph from a paper on the subject:
"... driven by the certainty that they are privy to sacred truths and are therefore morally obligated to do everything in their power -- no matter how many people may suffer -- to act upon these truths ... a tendency to dehumanize and even demonize those who oppose them."

I'm wondering how the "locals" in the US are feeling about all of this at the moment, especially as the due date looms near? We only tend to hear about the more higher level news here in Oz so I'm curious to know what the feeling is "on the ground".

Cheers,

The Capitol looks beautiful and I am honored to be at work tonight.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House for the first time since she was shot last January, making a dramatic entrance Monday night during a crucial debt vote and drawing loud applause and cheers from surprised colleagues.

my :twocents-02cents: no matter who is in charge of the government, it can't keep spending more and more money on programs when there is less and less money coming in. the debt ceiling raises it is asking for is like you having a credit card and spend it up to its limits and then cry for the limit to be raised when you cant pay for what you have already spent. a little fiscal responsibility is needed. if the congress cant reach a budget decision and provide a realistic balanced budget every year, they need to get out of office and let someone do the job that is best for the country. that means spending within the country's means. if you only have 20 dollars coming in you shouldn't be spending more than 20 dollars. I blame all the career politicians for the continuing problems on spending.

Well yeah but the debt ceiling constantly gets raised, and in times of economic crisis obviously it's going to need to be raised more.

Cutting the amount of available money floating around during a struggling economy just continues to send the economy into an unrecoverable nosedive.

It's actually not that big a deal, do you know how the US government creates money? It prints say 100 million dollars worth of treasury bills, says to the reserve bank hey we need 100 million dollars thanks, the bank prints the money and hands it over, then the government lends it at interest to banks, who then lend it to corporations and the general public.

The debt ceiling will ALWAYS be raised because when the federal reserve prints money and hands it over to the government, it charges INTEREST in the form of those T-Bills when they mature.

What this means is, the amount of money the bank prints is ALWAYS less than the amount of money the government will end up owing them...it is a debt that can never be paid off. Not by anyone, ever. The debt is built into the system.

John Q Public has to pay the bank the interest he owes on the money he borrowed from his bank, the bank in turn pays a lower rate of interest to the government, and the government keeps printing T-bills to hand over the the federal reserve in exchange for cash money

It's a game of musical chairs.

How did you get my medical file? If you keep posting snippets from it, it could get quite embarrassing for me.
