When assholes tailgate me like that, I like to pop my brakes and fuck with them for being such a fucktard. Your poor planning and shit for brain manners is not my emergency.

Personally the woman in the car gets bonus points for coming to a dead stop on the left side of a two lane road and then laughs at the guy.

Actually, that's a left hand turn lane and she came to a stop where she was supposed to.

Looking at the reddit produced lots of interesting info.

- Florida Statute 316.081 currently reads, as follows:

"Abstract: (2) Upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway. ".

- The speed limit for that section of US 41 was 50 MPH, she was doing 55. Beside the 2 lanes for normal traffic, there are separate left hand turn lane like both the pickup driver and woman entered.

- By her own account, he had been tailgating her for 4 minutes before the start of the video add in the 90 seconds before the accident. The woman had been traveling 5 miles in the left hand lane. She claims that she was turning left in 1/2 mile. So she had 5:30 seconds to find an opportunity to get over to the right lane and let the guy behind her pass. There is no evidence she attempted to do this.

- She routinely films people doing stupid things but had never seen anything like this. (What is it with Florida and vigilantes?)

- It is legal to use a cell phone while driving in Florida but you can be ticketed for distracted driving.

Of the 1200+ comments on reddit the consensus is that pickup driver is asshole. I'd say 70%+ of opinions also thought the woman was in the wrong. I'm with the majority.

Or just flicking your lights on. Not that I have ever done that...

My favourite karmic rebalance was a delivery driver who who hurled abuse at me for crossing with the lights. Full on swearing and gesturing becasue we crossed on a green light. He cut so close behind me I could belt his mirror on the way past.

I saw on the news next day his van scrunched under the front of a Scandia road works truck. He has been so busy abusing pedestrians he didn't look up to see the truck parked 5 metres in front of him, drove straight into it and died.

I don't think death is "karma" for yelling abuse at people...

So she was going faster than the limit and faster than other vehicles (in the video, given she was overtaking them). From the quoted legislation, she was under no obligation to move over. "Normal traffic" is not defined as one individual trying to drive up your trumper!

As for 70% of reddit, I'd wager the fact she was female influenced a lot of those opinions...

Do you have link for that definition "normal traffic"? Cause I can point to several sources that say opposite. If you notice at the start of the video a big truck is in the right lane and disappear out of frame and is passing her or along side her. . The asshole pickup driver tailgates her very aggressively which cause her to speed up.. She is so proud of this she shows her speed 55. Then around 50 seconds she finally re passes. If you are driving in the left lane and a commercial truck in the right lane is keeping up with with you or pass you, until you prodded to go faster by the tailgater behind you you aren't driving the normal speed. Instead you are impending traffic and are part of slower traffic and the posted signs tell you to keep right.

Actually if you read reddit many people were unsure of the drivers sex (young kid or woman). I was unsure so I simply called her the driver in my first two posts.

What, this reddit: "Guy tries to flick off woman while driving, gets instant justice."

Srsly? *insert cat picture here*

The reddit with has the most comments (1320) (which started before the one you refer) is here http://www.reddit.com/r/JusticePorn/comments/21hfh7/instant_karma_road_rage_edition// It has the same title as the youtube video Instant_karma-Road Rage.

@HiGirlsRHot: Dude, you need to step away from this thread. Just stop. It's pretty apparent that you are using this thread to justify/get affirmation/gain approval for your high-speed "wannabe ambulance run". I'm very sorry your mom got sick (and I hope she's better), but it's doubtful that anyone here is going to condone your "heroic" actions.

To sum it up, you've gone from:

*Reckless - 65MPH race on unfamiliar streets (you were on vacation, so I'm assuming here) for a non-emergency situation. The only good thing that happened is you didn't kill your mom or anyone else driving at that time.

to

*Wrong - I don't care how many lanes, or if there is a median...if there are fucking stop lights...it's not a fucking freeway/highway/expressway. Yes, there are urban roads labeled "HWY whatever", but most of these were laid down before the Federal Interstate System was built. These "highways" are simply the "straight line" between 2 destinations. Every state has them, and in some cases they have been built out to "real" highways. Again, stop lights = roads, not highways.

to

*Foolish - You cite jalopnik, but neglect to acknowledge:
"The states indicated in green dictate that the left lane should be used exclusively for passing or turning left, though most of these limit enforcement to multi-lane highways"
*or*
"Unfortunately, most of these laws are only enforced as a way of pulling over suspicious vehicles or passengers." *meaning that the laws are to enable police to have a "probable cause" to stop a vehicle, not to enable tailgaters"*

to

*Desperate - Now you're citing reddit as an "authority" (reddit, really?), and seemingly monitoring the same to get some kind of support for your argument.

Let's stop before you get to "sad". Before you say anything, in no way am I telling you what to do, or trying to censor you, or whatever. Hey, keep on keeping on, if that floats your boat.

For what it's worth, I think I'm going to need a laugh in the next few days. Your continued posts here will help me out a bunch!

The reddit I found had ~4330 comments. I had to look at the source code of the web page to find it was posted 40 minutes after the one you're referring to.
However, I don't read reddits - life is too short :D However, your "fact checking" is definitely lacking ;)

As for the horse being dead - it died before you tried to clamber on top of it to flog it a few extra yards down the road - but glad you noticed :D

Still no link (you offered) with regards to the sources that define "normal traffic"?

Man I have no idea where you are getting this stuff from. This has nothing to with an 8 year old incident with my mom, where I "recklessly" went 65 MPH on a mostly deserted 4 to 6 lane highway with 55 MPH speed limit, I am really sorry I mentioned it. I am well past debating if she was impeding traffic by driving below the normal speed. It is by a nature a subjective test and none of us were there and reasonable people can disagree..

Got involved in a thread on reddit based on this vid yesterday. So many people were more irate at the person recording it for being in the left lane.

I have always been under the impression that on city streets (as opposed to highways and freeways), that you just drive in whatever lane is convenient for you. And the person who posted this video was making a left hand turn in about half a mile, so why would they switch lanes to let a tailgater zoom past at unsafe speeds when it's inconvenient for them?

Amber's question was a good one, I thought the rule applied everywhere but I was not sure so I did some research
Where you and many other are wrong is thinking that because she wasn't driving on a freeway the left lane rule doesn't apply.
I am baffled why don’t you consider US HIGHWAY 41 which is policed by the Florida HIGHWAY Patrol a highway as layman definition of a highway. But it doesn’t matter what you think, what matter is how the law defines a highway. It is surprisingly broad, which is why people are so confused.

Florida law. "STREET OR HIGHWAY.— a) The entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place of whatever nature when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular traffic;”

Since street and highways are synonymous in most state, (CA being an exception) when you leave your driveway you are on the highway.. See nothing about stoplights, median, left turn lanes etc. and your definition of highway isn’t in the same ballpark as the law. Legally US Highway 41 is a multi-lane highway, despite what you think. You are correct it isn't a limited access highway aka a freeway.

But none of the definitions of highways matter since the left lane statue I posted starts off this way.: “Upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic ..." A roadway is just the surface vehicles travel on excluding the shoulder. The term includes everything from one lane country roads to 8 lane freeway. In case there is any doubt the statute says ALL roadways. Now if you want to point to a section of the Florida vehicular code that makes an exception for Highway 41 please post it.

So the woman was clearly on a roadway, she certainly didn’t need to drive 5.5 miles in the left hand lane to make a left hand turn so the left lane exception doesn’t apply.. There are no exceptions for school zones, business districts, residential area, or slick roads or even if is inconvenient. If she is driving below the normal speed she needs to speed up, or move over, period. If she is passing another vehicle, then after she passes them she needs to move over, she didn’t. Of course the top priority is operating the vehicle is a safe fashion, but she had opportunities to safely move into the right lane before the video starts and after passing the second truck. .So the sole legal question is: was she ‘proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic”? I think most of the time the normal speed in the left hand lane is 5 to 10 miles above the speed limit. We don’t know what the speed limit on that stretch of US 41 is, her speed other than one glimpse of her speedometer, or the speed of other vehicles so we can’t really judge if she was going below normal. The reason we have left lane rules, is in part to prevent road rage accident. Common sense says she should have pulled over let the tailgating jerk pass her and then film him.

TL : DR The law says slower traffic stays right everywhere not just on a freeway..

Where do you get this 5.5 miles figure?

She was quoted saying:

“After about a minute and me shaking my head, I pulled out my phone and started recording,” she wrote on YouTube. “I couldn’t move over because there were trucks in the right lane and I sure as heck wasn’t going to speed on a rainy day with the roads being as slick as they were. I was turning left in about a half-mile when this happened.”

My previous post proves she could not pull over because there were two trucks in the right lane, nor was she ever obligated to if she was intent on turning left soon regardless of what type of road she was on.

Well the full video is 3:17 (some stopped) + ~1 minute to pull out the phone so @55 3-4 miles and another 1/2 mile to her intersection so maybe 4 miles is better figure. The full video has 30 seconds of her traveling at same speed as the white truck. Why couldn't she have pulled over behind the 1st truck since they were traveling the same speed? Why couldn't she have pulled over after passing pickup truck and then immediately get back in the left lane to make her left turn?

Now there's some creative calculations! Since when did it ever take a woman a whole minute to pull out her cell phone. If she's like 99% of other women, she all ready had it out and just had to pick it up.

Where can we watch this FULL video with the additional minute + 23 seconds that are not seen in the OP?

Because piss poor driving on his part in no way obligates her or anyone else to make unsafe, unnecessary lane changes on a slippery road. She was doing the speed limit or more, as it was. The speed limit there is 50 and she showed herself going over 55 with him on her ass.

The stupid fucker is lucky to be alive! Not to mention how he could have easily taken several other lives with his own the way he went through oncoming traffic lanes. A few seconds later and he would have been demolished by a tractor trailer.

Well you quote her "After about a minute and me shaking my head, I pulled out my phone and started recording". She posted the whole video on youtube a couple of days ago. Why would it be unsafe to make a lane change either before or after the two trucks, it isn't like wet roads are uncommon in Tampa?

How do you know what the speed limit is before the start of the video? I am not arguing. I have not been able to find any definitive source for a speed limit (the reporter was referring the crash site I believe) and the default speed for Florida 4 lane divide highway is 60.

Anyway it doesn't matter we simply don't know enough to make a judgement from the internet.

Seriously? As if the douchebag's abrupt lane change wasn't evidence enough... after a hot dry spell, oils and other fluids from automobiles build up on heated roadways. The first following rainfall post heated dry spell is quite hazardous because the rainwater loosens all the surface oils, creating nasty, greasy driving surfaces that often catch drivers off guard, just like the video shows.

BTW, US Route 41 is not your typical highway... US 41 is paralleled by Interstate 75 all the way from Miami to Georgia (on the northern border), and I-75 has largely supplanted US 41 as a major highway. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_41

Updated: Friday, March 28 2014, One man's road rage became instant karma on a highway in Florida this week -- and it was all caught on video.

A Florida woman used her phone to record a guy in a pickup tailgating her. She was in the fast lane of state highway 41, doing a little over 55 in a 50 mile per hour zone as he pressured her. Finally he cut into the right lane. And went by waving an upraised finger. Then he dropped back and pulled alongside, giving her another middle finger salute. But maybe he should have kept his hands and all of his fingers on the wheel because when he cut in front of her he crashed.

The laughing lady pulled over and called 911. The Florida Highway Patrol tells CNN that the driver of the pickup, 33-year-old Jeffrey White, fled the scene and was later arrested at his Tampa home based on information gained from the woman's video. White was charged with leaving the scene of a traffic crash, careless driving and failing to wear a seatbelt.

We couldn't get hold of either driver to comment on the road rage incident. But the woman wasn't ticketed.
