If you're not following the debates & proposals related to net neutrality, you should. The biggest element might be that cable companies could be allowed to create a fast lane on the Internet giving priority to some traffic over other types. For websites to be in the fast lane, they would have to pay a premium to the cable companies. Besides possibly making higher bandwidth websites like Netflix or webcam sites pay more, the cable companies could even deny a site the option to pay to be in the fast lane for any reason they wanted. If a religious, anti-porn person took over a cable company, they could slow speeds for adult content to all its customers. And of course, any premium a site did pay, would surely be passed onto the consumers. The cost of a Netlfix subscription or a MFC token could go up, if it is allowed to happen. Not surprisingly, the company who spends the 2nd most $ on political lobbying groups in the US is Comcast. Rather than spending it on customer service, where they are one of the worst rated companies by consumers. The FCC is even now run by a former lobbyist for cable companies. Looking like another situation where Americans are going to get completely screwed by ISPs. :snooty:

Honestly...as far as I'm concerned, this is a symptom of the US descending into a second Gilded Age, that won't be rectified until something well and truly serious happens.

The FCC is a thoroughly captured agency, easily the worst I've seen since the EPA of the '80s, and that's not changing until Congress gets off its ass to do something to restore oversight of independent agencies. That won't happen (same hand that feeds the FCC feeds Congress via lobbies and campaign contributions) sparing a major reversal of administrative law jurisprudence, and good luck of that happening (this court is more corporation-friendly than the Chevron court, somehow). So, the whole thing is a wash sparing campaign finance reform (to get people worth a damn in Congress in the first place), and that ain't happening without a court decision reversing Citizens United.

So...we're pretty screwed. Sorry to be a downer. The FCC may as well do the honest thing for once, and redirect comments about net neutrality to /dev/null.
