A teenage girl from California has been booked in juvenile hall for allegedly drugging her parents to get on the Internet.

The girl’s parents would not allow her to access the Internet after 10pm, which she thought was “too strict,” according to a Rocklin police statement. So the girl mixed a friend’s prescription sleeping pill into her parents’ milkshakes.

The parents noted their milkshakes tasted very odd and only consumed about a quarter of them. But it was apparently enough for the drug to take effect and both parents were unconscious within an hour, providing their daughter with unrestricted Internet access.

Upon awakening the following morning, the parents suspected something had been put in their milkshakes. Their suspicions were confirmed after they took a drug test.

The daughter and her friend were arrested for conspiracy and willfully mingling a pharmaceutical into food. They were booked into Placer County Juvenile Hall.

Pretty crazy story. I can understand being frustrated at having a cut off for the internet but seriously, drugging your parents? Must have been hard for the parents to call the police after realising what happened and that she did it.

This could have gone so very wrong. Had she killed one of them on accident by overdose JUST to access the internet?

Putting on my old curmudgeon parent hat... :-x
Spoiled rotten youth of today. Their life is centered around electronic media and as shown here, have little grasp of reality or for that matter.. whats right or wrong. The sad thing is that I'm guessing she saw nothing wrong with this behavior and felt something to the effect of its her right to be online .... another parenting fail.

I agree with your post except maybe for the 'parenting fail' part, since we can't really tell how she's raised. And the parents did at least set the rule about no internet access after 10 PM, as opposed to letting her stay on FB all night long, falling asleep at the computer, and then saying to her in the morning "Aw, are you still tired, sweet pea? Well then, your mother and I won't make you go to school today if you're tired."

And for all we know, she could be a sociopath...with no remorse for what she did.

Man, when I was a kid I would just have to wait for my old man's late afternoon to early evening black-out. Fortunately he never had a problem finding the bottle on his own so my conscience is clear.
Of course, when I was a kid, I hadn't invented the internet yet so it was all about the stack of Hustlers stashed in the camper.

heh.....this reminds me of a friend of my daughter's....a story that's not really about drugs or the internet, but included both for this kid.....and a story about some high end wilderness rehab for youngsters that basically did as you're suggesting -taught this kid that the outdoors is reality, and it's a place of wonder and enjoyment.

that's really all i know about the place, except that it worked for this kid.

Have you guys seen the Justin Beiber hashtag on Twitter where girls are cutting themselves in hopes that Justin will stop smoking pot? Kids these days :( I'm so happy I had a rather simple childhood.

I had a roomie many years ago who was a leader for a couple Outward Bound treks. She told me it really works. Outward Bound may be one of the very first of those kind of programs.

My thoughts on the original story:

I can totally get the logic behind what these girls did. They probably thought that they were being extremely clever, and like many more mature adults, believed that it is safe to self-prescribe over the counter medication. I would wager that the majority of teenagers would say it is completely safe to take the suggested dose of sleeping meds, especially those 'safe' enough to be sold without a prescription. I don't remember the exact wording of the article, but these kids thought their parents wouldn't even notice or just be less likely to wake up during the night.

While it is obviously a horribly stupid thing, and while I think police intervention was appropriate, I feel I can empathize with what those youngin's were thinking at the time.

Totally agree. Many of us were simply extremely lucky that some of the horrid decisions we made as teenagers didn't manifest as someone getting hurt or we getting sent to jail.

Humans, I believe, are born like any other animal--wild and feral. A parent's job is to not only provide food, love, protection and shelter but to somehow civilize us without breaking our creative spirits. Hell of a task.

Yeah, well part of the reason kids are meant to be given less responsibility - and held less responsible - is that they're often prone to make rash and risky judgement calls without actually realising the risk or consequences. I agree that it was dangerous, and I agree that they wouldn't have realised just how dangerous (they probably didn't think about secondary factors like a parent suffocating after vomiting etc).

If i would have pulled this is would have ended with me calling the cops so my mom would stop beating me to death lol. Plus id never see the internet again for pulling anything like that.

I agree, im guessing they probably saw nothing wrong with putting a little dosage in their parents drinks. What could be the harm right? Movies dont show the true stuff that happens when people do this kind of stuff. Its all fun and games like spiking drinks with Visine. They dont look it up and see how many people are now in jail for murder and attempted murder for the stunts.

Kids see things and think its all cool to recreate them. I remember my brother watching Ninja Turtles and made a grappling hook out of wire hangers and foil. He planned to scale out his window with it. Dumb dumb dumb. My mom busted him and had to explain why that exactly wouldnt work lol. But had she not of who knows what would have happened.

So the parents stopped drinking after a couple of sips. Imagine if they had downed the whole thing. There's a good chance they could have died or suffered brain damage. Hope they put that kid away for a long time.
