I’m currently a college student and I have 4 roommates who come in and out of our apt all hours..

I want to get into caming to pay off some bills if I can.

I’m worried one of my roommates may walk in on me or get into my stuff.

I’m not sure I want them finding out what I’m doing.

I understand that caming means giving up privacy, but I just don’t want my roommates in my business.

I am in need of money stat and thought about stripping instead of caming at least then I can be more private...

I don’t know...thanks for reading

Aggggh, camming with roommates can be challenging on several levels. I'm fortunate enough to be living with people who know and respect what I do but I DONT WANT THEM TO HEAR ME, and definitely don't want them to walk in on me.

So here's how I deal-

I've made basic little efforts to sound proof/muffle sound coming out of my room. I always have a fan going (near door). I have carpets and try to fill the gap underneath my door with a scarf to further insulate. I play music with a portable speaker near door also, so that it's loud enough to block out some sound but not annoying for customers. I made a little door-hanger that says "Do Not Disturb" . The biggest help for me was buying a quality microphones so I can speak in a sexy soft voice/whisper and guys love it/roommates can't hear it. (I don't want people to think I'm like sponsored by Blue Yeti lol this is like 3rd time I've brought it up)

And last but not least, some guys think the whole "sneaky" aspect of it is super hot!

If you have issues with roommates violating your space, you can request a lock and key be installed on your door. If you landlord is being a butt about it, just go to a hardware store and purchase one yourself.

But if you keep your camming equipment put away when not using, and you don't want to go through the troubles of installing a new lock: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N95IVSQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_QebMAbPJPFRCY

You can also purchase lock boxes to store your sensitive items.

Cam when your roommates are at work, school, or otherwise out of the house whenever possible. If you have to cam while they're home, speak quietly, play music, and lock your door.

But just so you know, camming is not fast money in most cases. It can be good money, but it takes a while for most camgirls to build up a following and earn decent money. Stripping and escorting are faster money and cash in hand every day if you need to make money fast.

If stripping or escorting aren't options for you and/or you're not comfortable doing them and you want to make money camming faster than the 1-2 weeks it takes for most sites to pay out, your best bet is to sign up for daily pay through Boleyn Models for Streamate, MFC, or Chaturbate and cam as much as possible.

i currently live with my best friend (known each other for 15 years.) and two other people. two know about what i do and respect and support it; however, the other is oblivious of my job. i can really only cam during the late hours (midnight to about 5 am, usually). i wish i could cam during the day to get more exposure, though.

do what you must, work around their schedules and take advantage of any free/privacy time you are granted by this universe.

may i ask what microphone do you use? this would come in handy for my situation, as i'm wary of being heard and/or too mindful of my voice levels. and thank you in advance!

I splurged on the Blue Yeti microphone because I had seen it used in a lot of ASMR videos on youtube. I can talk in a breathy whisper and the guys hear it loud as day while my roommates don't hear a peep! Only annoying thing is it's size,I don't have a desk, I cam from bed usually so I put my laptop on a milk crate and then I put the microphone on a box near me.

if you can find a time they arent home thats the easiest solution. but some people think its really hot to play on the " i could get caught" role. So if you say that and are also quiet and keep your door locked no one should think much of it.

There a gal on CB who lives with room mates and she cams in the 'family room'. It's kind of hilarious to hear them come and go while she's humping the couch.

It must be nice to have room mates who don't give a fuck about what you do.

I would also suggest using a white noise machine by your door so they can't hear you - this is huge. Also, you can tell them when that machine is on, you're busy on conference calls or something. You should definitely tell them you're doing something so they know, but you could tell them you got a job where you're working remotely and you need to be able to take a lot of Skype calls or etc, and can't be interrupted.

I'd also invest in a room divider (cloth ones are on Amazon for like $35) to place around your space so that even if someone accidentally walks in, they can't see you, and no one will see them.

My advice is that the best route here is to either find a time when you know with absolute certainty that you are going to be at home alone, or otherwise discuss this with your roommate (I understand this may not be an option, depending on your relationship with said roommate, need for privacy, etc). I would opt for the latter as it will alleviate you of any anxieties and concerns that certainly would permeate into your modeling, but that's really contingent on what your relationship with this roommate is like.

The taboos surrounding this industry are diminishing exponentially; perhaps you could sit down with your roommate and explain the industry to them, and explain your reasonings in wanting to partake...NOT because you *owe* anyone an explanation, but so as to confirm your privacy and extricate yourself from the distractions of worrying about your roommate.

Ultimately, it comes down to your want for what can potentially be very considerable income versus some other person's opinion - the former is far more important unless your roommate's knowing about this will negatively affect your living situation.

In my experience, camming with someone else around, or the possibility of that person showing up can be very distracting. It can compromise the quality of your shows and your morale in performing to constantly worry about being overheard or 'outed'.

Everyone who knows me on here knows I am a married man (and furthermore that my wife is privy to *everything* I do insofar as camming and modeling is concerned). Still, I only broadcast when she is out at work. Even with my absolute comfort with and trust in my wife, camming while she is around can be extremely distracting. I've tried it; doesn't fare very well.

When you are performing, it's imperative that you get into the mindset that is your 'model persona' - to do that, you need to excise all distractions. I even turn my phone off when I cam. Best of luck to you.

Ultimately, if your roommate knowing about this isn't going to negatively affect your living situation, then tell them about it so they can afford you the privacy you need in order to work. Hell, having more of a guarantee that you will be contributing to rent won't be a bad thing!

On a side note, be careful about your roommate (or anyone) accidentally stepping into view of your camera while broadcasting. Most sites (certainly Chaturbate) require ALL persons on-cam to be verified. You can be banned from the cam-site for even showing a glimpse of someone's face if they are not verified.

I would be willing to bet money that those roommates are also cam models. I was staying with some ladies in Vegas this week and cammed in their living room. I just waved as they walked through to the kitchen.

Cam when they're not home, listen to music while you're at it so they won't realize what you're up to and, of course, close your door
or
you can invent that you need more privacy (hence the closed door) to do a different job that requires concentration like something related to online customer support

As someone previously said, depending on the relation that you have with them, you might want to tell them directly, and you would be surprise on how much they don't care :D.

I've recently started doing that, but since I know that generally one on my roommate come to chat in my room, I was just honest with her. And even if she would never do such a thing, she is totally fine with me doing it. For the other roommate, he is a friend but I know he never bothers me in my room, so it's fine :)

And if your relation is not that great, well I guess they will not bother you too much, just put a lock at your door and if they want something just tell them you are very busy with other stuff (and as other said, you might want to put on so music to cover the noise)

P.S.

You might even convince them to join :joyful:
