I'd sleep on the floor before I'd sleep on a mattress infested with black mold. You might be doing irreversible damage to your lungs and general health. You could get a cheap air mattress for like $20. Even if it's not something you can afford RIGHT NOW, I'm sure it's doable in the near future anyways.

I don't want to sound like I am attacking you, but I'm genuinely concerned for your well-being. Stop sleeping on that thing and do something about this hazardous situation!

At any rate, I'm back home now and it seems a lot better. I am having some major itchy problems, but with my sensitive skin and suddenly heightened allergies that doesn't really mean much. I can breath, though, so I think i can manage to live here for another 2 months! Hopefully our new place doesn't have anything in it that I'm allergic to.

That's good to hear that you're doing better Lady. :)

I'm working on fixing our situation but paying the bills and affording groceries are more important than where I sleep and I don't forsee us affording an extra $20 in the next month or two. With the shower liner and the fan going constantly that has stopped the mold from growing since this summer and I've kept it from spreding to the rest of the room. BJ doesn't sleep on the bed, he currently sleeps either on the couch or the floor and probably will keep doing so until we can afford a real bed that doesn't make his bone problems worse. He sleeps on a special pillow from his doctor for his back on the couch right now. As long as I keep things the way they are and don't let the room get warm, then the mold isn't such a problem and it will probably be fine until I can fix the situation.

I think you're insane and if it were me I'd do what I needed to do to get something else to sleep on. I guess I also just don't understand how $20 is so hard to come by. Start a Free me form the Mold Chip-in or borrow money from a family member. *shrug*

I would ask a family member but they're all worse off than me. It's not pleasant and the thought of sleeping on mold icks me out big time, but there isn't another option right now. I keep my financial situation private because I don't like explaining why I can't afford $20 to buy an air mattress.

I dealt with a very unpleasant mold situation when I was younger. It's not a very fun thing to deal with.

Add a mattress less than $80 to your Amazon wish-list and I'll get it for you :)

I'm allergic to "certain types of mold". my symptoms of contact are only there when ingested, and are itchiness and welts. Other symptoms of allergies that others have are stuffy nose and persistent tiredness. Different from the symptoms of mold poisoning. There's a difference between an allergy and a poison. While you might be responsible for getting rid of "harmless" mold, the apartment complex is definitely responsible if it's one that's poisonous to humans. Even more so if it's inside the walls.

Anyone dealing with mold should take steps to minimize it IMMEDIATELY. Moldy mattress and no money? Trash the mattress, and spread blankets out to sleep on. Mold spreads. If you have a moldy mattress, it will spread to the carpet and the walls, and you'll have to pay for all that to be replaced. I've slept on a pile of blankets on the floor. It's not the best, but it's better than poisoning yourself.

Also, who pays for more, the guy on the couch or you? The person who pays the most deserves the best rest. ^_^

You can get mold test kits from home depot or lowes for pretty cheap and have them assessed for cheap as well $30 I think. Bleach does NOT kill mold spores, you have to use a product with conchromium (sp) that will kill the spores which are like eggs from the mold. Bleach only kills the "plant" part of the mold. I work in home improvement....with a beat up victorian 112 year old house and a hubby with allergies and asthma. Been there done it. Good luck yall!!

No worries guys, the moldy mattress is now gone. :) Thanks to mross2_.

We can't prove anything is in the walls and so we're just stuck cleaning it ourselves.

Home mold testing kits only confirm that there is mold in the air, which is always true. Only mold specialists and some home inspectors have the right equipment to find out how much of what kinds of mold are in a place.

Did he seriously buy you a new mattress? That's awesome! :-D
He bought me a sturdy air mattress that is designed to last for semi long term use. :) So the plan is to work my ass off and try to get a 'real' one for my birthday next month since he's bought me some time and a safer place to cam. :D

This needs some applause  and maybe even some Beavis and Butthead :character-beavisbutthead: Things like this keep me from completely losing faith in humans.

Yeah this can lead to all kinds of health problems, respiration [breathing/lunge] issues and long term health condition(s). I had one client we where working with that had literally furniture and an entire 3 floor office building with furniture and drapes from the 1960's that where never cleaned... it was pretty bad, since the company just had too many properties almost like the US federal government and never had done any formal health inspections/audits of the property... Ultimately we had to report the facility to the state to have them act on the situation as personal in the offices where getting sick and had all kinds of health issue(s), in particular those that where older 60+ and where more prone to having respiratory problems.

I am back to feeling like shit all the time now that I've been home for a couple weeks. I REALLY don't think that this place is safe yet. AND the windows get so so so wet and if I miss a day of wiping them off more mold starts to form already! We can't afford a dehumidifier yet, and since we already put in our 60 day notice (YAY!) we probably will just stick it out.

My mom's ex boyfriend used to be a house inspector and has the fancy mold do-hicky. She's been talking to him again and although I think it's be a mistake for them to get back together I told her if she's still seeing him she should send him down here with that thing, haha.

The worst part about this apartment is how depressed I am when I am home. I don't know if it's the complete lack of natural light, the clutter, or the possible mold, but either way I can't wait to get out of here and be happy productive person again. I really want to rent a house but I don't know if we'll be able to find anything in our price range. I don't leave the apartment a lot because i work at home and my boyfriend is gone at work with the car all the time, so living somewhere less claustrophobic feeling is a must.

I'm sick of staring at the same mold-infested walls all day everyday! :angry4:

I have social anxiety and don't like ever ever go anywhere by myself. Also, it's COLD! lol

I don't recall the actual date but it's pretty much the end of February, but since our deposit included last months rent we could probably move first thing in Feb. if we found a place.

Sounds like you need to wear a respirator inside. That would also look fucking sexy on cam. Get some glitter and silver foil and do an alien spaceship theme to your room :)

And yes, post a decent respirator on your amazon list and I'll try to buy it for you :)

ahahaha, oh lord. It's a fun thought but I really don't see myself getting away with wearing that more than once or twice on cam. I don't even have a wishlist because I do not have a PO box and don't want my real address on there. lol, thanks though.

ahaha, thank you so much! I had a feeling after getting the email that it may have been you! Which unsexy motherfucker do I need?

Will sleeping in respirators actually help? My boyfriend is going to think we're all crazy when i tell him this, lol.

WELL, alien Lady here i come.

I've been feeling pretty shitty for the last year or so. Lungs hurting, odd random pains coming from no where, lack of energy and the sort. I've been blaming it on the HORRIBLE air quality where I live.
While moving I found a small spot of black mold under my box spring, likely from when I first moved here and had to sleep with a humidifier. I've been feeling tons better since I moved out, went back today to let the house cleaners in and feel like shit again.
Can't be positive but I'm blaming that.

Wow, JJ! That's exactly what I feel is going on here, except that I haven't actually found any black mold. I always feel so much better after spending time away from home, like I can suddenly breathe again and I have all sorts of energy I don't have at home.

I'm so glad you moved, darling, and that you're feeling better! and the new place is fucking baller! Yay.

Might be easier to just go to your local hardware and see what they have in stock. Its going to need to be comfortable.

.

Breathing in the mold spores is what is causing the majority of your symtoms. Try wearing them all day and see how practical it is to sleep in them.

This is something you might already have seen.

Most mould is invisible to the naked eye, so every without visible mould you can be sick from it.

We are so lucky over in Australia, its mostly low humidity, and the government helps out so things never get as bad as it is for you guys.

I'll give a try but I think wearing it all day may be slightly impractical. And my face will get all hot and sweaty and gross.

But thank you! I'll probably just go to fleet farm or something on Saturday! I'll let you know when I get one!
