Hands down, it's the fear of being recognized by somebody from the area you're geoblocking. Two things can happen, basically. Either you get outed to your "real life" social circles, or your identity gets outed to your room. I generally feel the latter would be much, much worse. I don't give a fuck about the people I knew when I had a facebook, but it'd be genuinely dangerous if somebody malicious who knew my real identity came in and outed my legal name and/or location.

That being said, I don't geoblock. I'm careful with who I'm social with, and only a few trusted individuals (like, 3) know my actual location, name, and job. That way, the most likely bad thing would be somebody knowing 2/3 of those things. But it's a risk we all take when we turn on the cam. Geoblocking isn't a fail-safe, it just mitigates some risk.

Bingo! Not everyone in chatrooms think about a model's stance on their privacy. The member could be totally clueless and say something like "Hey remember it's me, we went to *insert high school*" And we all know how quick messages can be sent with a few clicks on a keyboard. If personal details were exposed in a model's room, reacting fast is critical, and what if there were hundreds and thousands of viewers in the room.

What Charlotte said is the main reasons for when I do use geoblocking. Haven't encountered too many rowdy members from the same area that makes me want to block the region.

I always assumed that the reason was fear of being disowned by your parents.

I can't speak for everybody, but even if my parents didn't know I cammed (they do), the fear of embarrassment/being disowned is still paltry compared to a life-threatening situation. That's why models freak about being outed- it has the potential to be genuinely dangerous in certain circumstances.

If my parents saw my porn I would be the one asking questions as to what kind of depraved folks they are :p

I geoblock where I grew up. Just so kids I grew up who still hang around there don't suddenlt oh heeyyy I know you, as was mentioned.

I heard that geoblocking can impact your income.

Geoblocking will not really impact income if your'e only blocking your'e home state. There are tons of other countries/states. Blocking 1 will not really impact it that much.

In my opinion being outed to your family and friends is way worse. Unless you happen to have a very liberal family who supports you no matter what.

I am not afraid of dangerous people learning my info because I live in a very populated area and I've had members find out many times in the past with absolutely no consequences for me, the most one member did was send me packages I didn't want to my home.

The reason I geoblock my state is because I don't want my neighbors recognizing me or the barista going HEY SUPERMILA!! especially in front of other people who may not know I am a camgirl. So basically: to avoid awkwardness.

The reason I geoblock other continents was already discussed, it's because in my experience some countries have the most awful members, people who will never ever ever tip and yet be incredibly abusive with their words and behavior, so I simply ban the entire region. It has had no impact on my income whatsoever.

Unless you're on Streamate. Your traffic is significantly lower if you geoblock, as only people signed on and in an acceptable region can see you.

Why does MFC give members the ability to geoblock?
they don't really. They just allow you to filter the models you see on the homepage by their region. This is for some guy who's decided he's only going to watch camgirls from a specific country. Or maybe someone who wants to avoid camgirls from a particular country. People have their likes and dislikes. It's a camsite. It's for people to find what they're into.

Members can geoblock their profiles.

I don't geoblock on SM because of income issues as @CharlotteLace explained. I did geoblock on other sites though because I am out with my family, friends, aquaintances and I know curiosity is going to make a lot of exes or guys I went to high school with want to find me. I realize that geoblocking isn't foolproof but if it cuts down on irl friends who can jerk off to me I'm all for it. Something about someone watching a cam show and me not knowing that they are just really skeeves me out. I live in the state I grew up in. If I were to ever move I think I would keep my home state blocked but not block my new place of residence.

I don't geoblock. I think there are only two reasons I would, personally.
1. If I were a big enough name for people to know that I had a lot of $ (ie a great target for crime).
2. When my kids start school to avoid a Harper Valley PTA situation.

I have my province geoblocked as well as the neighboring province. I would rather take a reduced visibility to members than accidentally have one of those members be my uncle, father, cousin, etc. I have a large family, who I don't see often and it's not exactly something I would want to be the next topic of our family reunion.

I may removed it later on since there's another model I want to cam with and do competitions with, but for now, it stays.

Yup, had two separate incidents where this happened on MFC (one blurted out my IRL nickname, and one blurted out the name of the place I used to work), and after that I decided to block my state and never regretted it. There are some things more important than money, such as peace of mind.

Members can geoblock their profiles.

Yup, they can. Member profiles are set up almost exactly like model profiles.
As for geoblocking a member's profile, from their standpoint, it's for privacy and protection, for models and members alike. It's so your neighbor can't say, "Hey Paul, fancy seeing you in SexpotSammy's room!" That might get a little awkward. Similar reason for models to geoblock their home state.

What I posted before was because I was confused what exactly he meant by geoblocking. I wasn't sure if he meant geoblocking who can view your profile, or ruling out/sorting the models you view on the homepage by country/region. I was a lil confused.

My dad has a job in internet crime- he takes in computers from crime scenes and searches them. While he's in a different state, that's a damn good reason to block.

I used to geoblock when I was on mfc/chaturbate but would get recognized anyway I assume since a lot of people move away from my home state. On streamate now, I don't even bother. In the past, I would only geoblock to prevent someone trying to stalk me, out my address, privacy from creepers in my town etc.
I don't care at all if any of my family sees me because most of my family know and accept it already and anyone who does find it and wants to act uppity about it can explain to me why they were on a camsite to begin with if they're going to point morality fingers :angelic:

I geoblock my home state and where I went to school (granted it's one city in the state, but for me it's worth knowing that none of my former professors will errantly stumble upon me). I realize it's not a foolproof measure, but most of the people in the places I blocked are not people who are going to jump through hoops to get around it. So mainly I block to keep people I know from discovering me/so I can control when they find out, and as mentioned above, to protect my own information to some extent.

I geoblock my country to prevent recognizing. My family knew what my job was, when I was camming so that wasn't the case.

Now I have another full time job and one of coworkers found my photos taken 4 years ago from the site that doesn't offer geoblocking. I was scared AF that he'd outed me but he didn't. I'm getting back to camming and will not be using sites w/o this feature, even though you can skip it by using proxy.

Well he doesn't know... so that's a bit hard to say. I worked at a strip club and while he helped me he didn't much care for it. He is very adamant about posting stuff online and how it can affect your future and so on.

When I was on MFC I initially did geoblock before I realized there was absolutely no point in it for me.
My parents/friends know what I do, my real full name is super crazy common, I've moved across several states like 4 times in the past 5 years so no one ever knows what my actual address is, I just really have little risk.

I have had people recognize me in public but no one has ever once acted threatening about it, and even if they DID I carry pepper spray and know self defense for a reason. In my experience most people are too embarrassed to approach you bc it's weird saying "hey I watch your porn" in front of a bunch of people.

I don't geoblock because
  1. I'm a hermit, so I only associate with a small group of people
  2. Aforementioned group of people know I cam
  3. People who knew me in high school know me by my actual name, but most of my social media accounts are under my nickname. I also happen to have one of those names that can be spelled 200 different ways so nobody will be able to decode it
  4. I've moved since high-school as well
  5. I don't give two shits if anybody recognizes me on the street. If hey approach me and ask if I'm valenciaway, I'll just answer "for 10,000 tokens I can be" I do actually care a little, in the sense that I don't want to be stalked or murdered
Geoblocking might be more of a concern if you're an extrovert. Even if I did geoblock my childhood state, California, I'd be blocking 40 million people. At any given moment while I'm on cam, there are probably at least 5 Californians in my room.

When it comes down to it, if you're from a small state there is more of a reason to geoblock. Bigger states, however, will cost you.

I've geoblocked the country I live in because I know that no one has that kind of money and can spend on a USD site. I don't feel like its affected my income too greatly and its kinda nice knowing that everyone who shows up in your room has a CC, can tip and isn't there to waste your time. Even though not every guy with CC registered will pay you, I just find it much easier than trying to convince someone to sign up for me etc.
