And of course, the judgmental types who Know Better Than You are already diving on the Comment section of the article like sharks in a feeding frenzy. :snooty:

I know.. I am trying my hardest not to read the comments. Why do people make so many assumptions?!

As you are no doubt aware, the joy people take in tearing down others is a very well documented thing in literature. As is destroying things that are different.

I don't know where my next article will be published - I will have to write it and then send it around!

Shaun__ pretty much nailed it. They like tearing things down or belittling those who don't fit into their world view.

The hypocrisy is what REALLY gets me. I'll wager a VERY large percentage (if not ALL) of those commenters have actively sought out porn more than once. Not for any lofty "research" reasons, either.

Thanks for being so supportive, guys.

Molodets. Good article and a fun read. Thanks for sharing it.

The comments? Meh. Salon is a bit more civilized than most places. About what you'd expect, and not all positive.

I just read that and immediately came here to see who it was! Nice job.

And I find it's good advice, in general, to never, ever read comments sections. Ever. Just like it's good advice to never crawl into a sewage tank.

Cool! Hehe, I'm letting my husband read the comments and report back on the particularly ridiculous ones. Blame Obama!

Kinda weird to not read the comments on your own writing, ain't it? So far they all seem to be pretty civil. I'd be really interested in what people thought of it.

Hi guys,

For those who are interested, Salon.com just published an essay I wrote about my personal experiences as a camgirl. Check it out!

http://www.salon.com/2014/02/10/from_harvard_to_webcam_girl/

I just drooled over your use of long, lovely words...

You are a wonderful writer, and this is a really great article. I love that you are having a great experience with camming and can speak of it in such a graceful, positive light - it made me smile

♥ ♥ ♥

Now I've heard everything, I thought. What guy in his right mind would pay to see someone like me to take off her … I paused, looking down at my austere gray cardigan. While I'm not unattractive, my waxen face, sturdy brown glasses and easily detectable baggage (both under-eye and emotional) hardly suggest that I'm someone you might want to see naked.

I would like to comment on this part of your article. It still stuns me at times when beautiful women don't see themselves for being as beautiful as they are. And you my dear, are incredibly beautiful. I wonder how many cam girls feel this way before and even after they started camming. And how your perception of yourself has changed throughout your camming career.

my friend who isn't stoked on the camworld sent me this link this morning. weird coincidence.

haha, great piece! I love this "“Why did you start camming?” asked someone with the username TiredForearm. “Well, I came here because I hate my real job and wanted to see if this could be a viable financial alternative,” I said, tweaking my nipples a bit in hopes of resuscitating some of the erections I undoubtedly just lost."

also shared it on twitter :]

Thank you. While I still have doubts about my appearance now and then, camming has had a very positive influence on my self-image. I hope that this is the case for other camgirls, as well.

Thanks, Ivy! I wish that more people would recognize that this is not the story of some "fallen woman" who has thrown her life away. Cheesy as it sounds, quitting my office job and turning to camming was what really helped me get a hold of my life.

The people that view it in a negative way are the sort who lack the imagination to see the possibility that ANY form of sex work could be beneficial. It doesn't fit their own personal view of How The World Should Work, so it MUST be BAAAAD! *Insert Thermonuclear Facepalm Emote here.*

Great article, bb. You're a very talented writer :thumbleft:

I skimmed the comments and they're honestly not too offensive. Not all complimentary, but people tend to hold strangers to higher standards than they do themselves, and that's especially true on the internet. There's no real rampant misogyny or "slut-shaming" going on there that I could see anyway. Which seems to be the natural reaction to articles of this ilk.

Upon rereading, I did find myself questioning your decision to mention your mother's past in the sex industry. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that this article might get back to people who could recognize you and them. Did you feel that really necessary, and did you clear it with them?

My mom has read the article and has no issues with it. She is an activist and does not hide her own past in the sex industry.

Even though I'm using a pen name, I consider this my "coming out."

is there any irony that you're quoting a post which asks why people make so many assumptions.
