Huuuuuuurrrgh

That was me just orgasming right there.

Oh my god. The Ender and Bean series were my best friends growing up. This is giving me goosbumps. If the movie sucks I will personally murder the filmmakers and their entire families and their pets and then pee on the ashes.

Well it is just a movie, so I don't think I'll kill anybody if it goes bad
However, it was one of the finest sci fi series of all time,so I'll definitely shed a tear. The good news is that Orson Scott Card is producing the movie.

The even better news is there a video game planned also, and if a book every cried out to be a video game, the Ender series is it.

Right there with you! I'll be seeing that opening weekend!

That really depends. Generally the author being involved can be a good thing, but it is possible that it is just a producer credit and he was not really involved much in the production.

I enjoyed a lot of his writing, especially the Ender series, up to Ender's Shadow. Everything after that has just been a cashing in of the series and the writing is really not that good. Generally, I don't let authors, actors, directors and musicians personal and political beliefs take away from my enjoyment of their art. BUT Orson Scott Card really rubs me the wrong way. He is crazy and an asshat. Do a quick google search "Orson Scott Card is crazy" you might be surprised by the results if you do not already know about him.

why can't they leave shit alone?

and was that Ben Kingsley playing Mazer Rackham? a maori? I'm offended and I'm not even maori
excuse me but there are plenty of fine maori actors that could play that part
and beyond that, Mazer didn't have a big role in the books and it looks like they're setting him up for a big part in the movie
:angry4:

I can't frakkin' wait.

And I thought Mazer had a decently sized role in the book. Maybe only halfway through/toward the end, but since that's a major plot point, I can see why he was in the trailer so much.

could be. your reading is probably more recent than mine. it's been years since I read Ender's Game and only recall Mazer showing up near the end when he goes to Command School.

SPOILERS

DONT READ THIS

UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE UNHAPPY

ok.

Mazer had a 'legend' kind of role, didn't he? Like, referred to through the books but didn't show up until the end. And I heard somewhere that they're not gonna have the alien killing plot twist reveal in the end, but have it well known all the way through - at least by the audience. We know, the commanders know, but poor Ender just runs about oblivious. I betcha they're gonna focus way more movie time to the end of the book.

OMMFG! i came a little, then cried a little, then shivered with goosebumps! assuming the kid can act even half a little bit he is sooo perfect as ender! and ford as graff? sublime genius right there. i agree with aella though, i think i will become homicidal if it doesnt live up to the trailer. that may be the best trailer i have ever seen btw.

I really really really hope they include the Fantasy Game in it somehow. The thread on Reddit had people mentioning that they didn't think it was in the movie, as well as Locke/Demosthenes story not being in the film either.

It's been too long since I read this book. Guess I'll use my one week off before summer classes start for that.

And may I say it's really cool seeing so many people have read this. I grew up in a small town and I was pretty much the only one who was interested in science fiction and fantasy books.

I try not to expect too much of movie adaptations of books however I am pretty fucking pumped about this. I LOVE the Ender series as well as the Shadow series and I feel like I am preparing myself to just enjoy it for what it will be. (Note: I always say this and then get all indignant right after the movie anyway. This will likely still happening but usually after the first viewing I chill out and go back to Plan A.)

Sometimes, you love a book so much that just having ANY way for it to go on is exciting, even if it "messes it up". Having another method of consuming it, especially in a quick way like with movies, can be really badass. It seems to be sadly inevitable most of the time that you must give up pieces of it to have this.

Anyway, I'm really excited and can't wait to come back here and talk about it with you all!

Also, Orson Scott Card is a total d-bag. Damn him for being such a good writer. Fortunately I don't have to like him to enjoy his books. 8-)

Orson Scott Card has to hurry. He only has mere months to create a PR nightmare for the film studio releasing the movie.

Don't read any of his Empire books, then. They're fully retarded as hell, in that they're his d-baginess turned up to 100. It produced a good video game despite this, somehow.

I've never read an Ender book, and knowing how much of a d-bag he is, I'm not sure I could, now.

Edit: Oops. He licensed the Empire setting from the game's makers. I thought it was the other way around. Either way, it's ridiculous. Left vs Right start a Civil War 2 in the US. Apparently, though, the books lean heavily towards Card's stance. The game was written by someone else, and also was Metroid, so like the story mattered, anyway.

Might see the movie, though. The trailer did look pretty good.

Sooo, now that the movie is out, I thought it reasonable to revive this thread.

Let me see if I can give you my opinion of the movie without revealing spoilers...

If you've read the book, stay away, or at least wait until it's at the discount. While there are moments when the script and dialogue are perfectly true to the book, they butcher everything about the book that makes it worth reading. It's like the script-writers weren't allowed to read it from beginning to end. My wife, who hadn't read the book in years, asked me as we were leaving how accurate it was or wasn't. Two hours later she was begging me to shut up. I'm surprised that Orson Scott Card didn't pull an Alan Moore and totally disown the film, but instead he's listed as a producer.

Oh, look, that wasn't so difficult.

If you haven't read the book, I suspect you'll still find it pretty bad, but to me it was so bad that I know full well that I can't judge it as a movie alone.

At least I can feel confident that they won't go on to butcher any more of them.

People who read the books what did you think of the movie?

I haven't read the books, but I didn't care for the movie. While I don't like the politics of the Author I didn't let that change my opinion of the film.

Pluses:
Beautifully shot (the formic battle scenes are beautiful).

Cons:
Hits. EVERY. Cliche.

Seriously...I don't think there's a single cliche that's not touched. I normally wouldn't mind that in a popcorn movie, but I heard so much about the great story that it left me a bit meh.

Enjoyable but underwhelming

btw, she should TOTALLY be a cam girl....just sayin'.
You should watch her in depth analysis of Game of Thrones. Videos on each family. Very detailed. She does a good job on all of hers.

Meh...don't watch Game of Thrones...I don't care much for George RR Martin (sure, I base that off of Wildcards and I know that's not fair..but still...)

You can't use Wild Cards as the basis for a case against A Song of Ice and Fire!! That is insanity. They are two completely different things! That's like eating an onion and then making the assumption that apples are bitter and going to make you cry like a little girl. <---- This analogy worked in my head, not sure if it is translating well.
Wild Cards is Sci-fi/ Super Hero and Game of Thrones is straight up Fantasy. Plus Wild Cards is a shared universe where other authors play in the sandbox.
Basically, please give the book series a try, wontchya? For it's own merit and what not.

Anyhow, sorry to sidetrack again. Ender's Game = excellent, Movie= not so much, Orson Scott Card= douchebag, My tummy=grumbling for food.

Well...I did admit that wasn't fair.

Another nit I'll pick with him...he uses the name George RR Martin, because he considers himself the JRR Tolkien of his time...and really, based on the Game of Thrones books...I guess he has a point...

I wasn't going to join in on the derailment of this thread but I have to weigh in here...

George Martin doesn't consider himself the JRR Tolkien of his time. He only compared himself to him insofar that Lord of the Rings like A Song of Ice and Fire, grew in the telling of the tale. LotR was meant to be a single volume, same with ASoIaF.. originally meant to be 3 books, now 7 being the target. Both of them are/were 'discovery' type writers, meaning they generally know what's going to happen, but just don't know the details. They plant seeds and see what grows from it.
I don't know GRRM personally, but I don't think he'd be presumptuous as to say or think "I'm the Tolkien of my time"
