Not necessarily. We have very similar risks. We're risking our reputations, our families, our safety just as much as pornstars are. We might have smaller risks of STDs, but that's only if you never cam with another person.

Ok gonna give yaanother example...put your name near a PornStar name...see the reactions just write somewhere where u can get opinions:
AllisonWilder vs. JennaJameson
See what answeres u get..u can take any other camgirl vs any other pornstar....see what u get

That's like comparing apples and convertibles. It just doesn't make sense. Jenna Jameson has been in the adult industry for years. I've only been camming just over a year.

Um...why? Maybe I'm missing what you're trying to say because we do all take similar risks and I don't see how comparing myself or any other camgirl to a pornstar makes a difference. It's a fact and it's not really an argument of camgirl vs. pornstar.

I consider myself a cam girl or cam model, but not a porn star. When most people say they're gonna go watch some porn, they're referring to a scene where two or more adults are sucking and/or fucking. That's what I've always considered porn, at least. But I realize that some people believe that cam girls = porn stars.

I cam solo, I don't do public chat cum shows, and in the majority of my private shows on other sites I'm not even asked to use a toy.

But I bet that when cam girls try to explain their jobs to friends/family, some of their friends/family react by saying *in shock* "OMG, you do porn???!!!"

I get that pornstars are on a whole different level than camgirls. Not better or worse than camgirls/nude models/phone sex operators by any means, just a different job, different level of interaction and different risks.
Correction...bigger risks
Actually, from what I've seen, there are bigger risks of being stalked as a cam girl. Guys don't often view pornstars as "real people," where as camgirls, they get obsessive, and think we are there gf's or something. Now, I'm not saying pornstars do not get stalked, but I think camgirls are at a higher risk when it comes to that. Especially when you have things like wishlists, take pictures of the restaurants you eat at and post it to twitter, have your blinds open so they can see your front yard with cross streets in the background, etc.

I put Jenna Jameson, Amber Cutie, Aedan Rayne, and Asha Snow into google. All of them got hits. Who cares who got more hits? The point is they ALL GOT RESULTS. It didn't even take that long for any of them. So what was your point? That the porn star is more searchable? Because all three camgirls are just as searchable as the porn star.

Now I'm lucky. Outside the adult industry, I'm not the only one who uses my name. So when I search me, I get other people in my results.

I tend to equate pornstars with actors. Even if the fucking is very real, I know nothing about the person, I have no way of knowing what they're really like, I'm completely aware that they're playing a role, reading from a script etc.
Camgirls - even if they're only presenting an exaggerated or altered version of themselves on cam - I don't think of as actors. I feel like I can get to know them a little, I can kinda sorta tell what they're like as a person, they're not reading from a script, they communicate real-life thoughts and feelings.
That's not a slight on pornstars. I'm well aware that they're real people, just like camgirls, but their profession doesn't allow the kind of interaction that camming does, and I can't get to know them like I can a camgirl, so I can't help but think of them differently :twocents-02cents:

I make porn on the side, but I'm not a porn star. #1, I'm no star! #2! Majority of my income is earned from very non porny things.
I consider myself an Adult Entertainer/Performer.
I think a cam girl can definitely get to the status of porn star without making main stream porn though. I would consider Giselle a porn star. I honestly don't know if she ever made porn in the past so don't yell at me! Girls who have very popular pay sites I would consider porn stars.

^THIS^ Megan hit the nail on the head.

PayPal...wishlists...Google...Facebook...Twitter...facial recognition...getting so comfy in public chat that you wind up telling everybody where you live and what school you attend, etc. Public chat may be dead quiet sometimes, but you can be sure there are lurkers in there looking and listening.

y dividing line is always about companies and contracts since the internet altered "porn" forever. back in the day a porn star was someone who did adult films, which were all produced by one of the major companies, or the small handful of small ones. then "amateur" porn came out, done by people not in the industry, but collected and distributed by the big companies. after the net came into the popular mind view porn has become a much more malleable thing, an the old definitions and boundaries arent as useful. if use the term "porn star" i am referring to an individual who, either under contract or as an independent agent, performs in adult films which are distributed by those companies.

everyone else has their own category or categories for the purpose of the oh so vital societal labeling frenzy. the majority of MFC ladies ive seen tend to fall into the genre of "adult entertainer". they do live shows, and sell or otherwise distribute their own pics/vids/panties/etc...

of course thats my generic term for anyone who doesnt gain their income from a single source. someone who only distributes images would be a nude or sex model. someone who only does live camming would be a ccam model, and so forth. but nowadays? good luck finding anyone who is willing to limit themselves to a single method of income generation. lord knows if anyone would pay useful amounts of cash to see my generous attributes i would cam, do pics, vids, hell i'd do outcalls, but im a known man whore

I don't consider myself a porn star. I do adult related things but I still just... don't.
not that I associate any negativity to it, I just think of it differently.

Yeah...I'm gonna say I'd object to the term pornSTAR because when you think of that you think Tori Black, Sasha Grey, James Deen (or at least I do) and similar people who are working for major labels.

Although the line starts to get funny when you consider amateur porn/indie porn etc. I think what the majority of cam girls do is solo porn, technically but it's definitely a different branch of this industry.

I agree completely.

While I have had opportunities to talk to some pornstars (online) at times, it's only been in Q&A sessions and such. Enough to get a bit of their personalities across, but not to actually know them. (Although I must say, Stoya really impressed me the one time I got to ask her some questions in an online chat. She's really smart, and seems like a genuinely interesting person.)

With some of my favorite cam models, though, I've really gotten to know quite a bit about them (and a couple of them have gotten to know quite a bit about me). Even with the ones I don't know, they interact in a way that is very personal. (Ok, not all cam girls are like that, but I don't stick around in the rooms of those who don't match this description.) Cam model and pornstar are two separate jobs. There is sometimes some overlap; there is a small group of women who are successfully able to do both jobs. But not all cam models are pornstars. Nor would most porn stars necessarily have the skills needed to be successful cam models.

What the nude models do, is porn. However, I think I'm far from a "star." I don't think I'm big enough to be considered a pornstar. I also think that the slang term "pornstar" refers to girls who do hardcore porn such as g/b stuff. So yes, if there is a well known cam model that does g/b videos, I would consider her a pornstar. Which, IMO, is not a negative term.
I don't consider any Playboy model like yourself, a pornstar, Maybe softporn, but not a hardcore pornstar. I do see you as the greatest Playboy model of all time! One who should already have been named the Playboy Playmate of the Century. With the name MegansDude, I might just be a little bias, but who knows? :D

Yup most fall squarely in the porn actress. My personal definition is that porn involves having sex with someone else on camera. Considering so many chats are recorded, and plenty of cam girl sell video of themselves having sex with someone else. I think many cam girls fall into the porn actress category. NOT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

Why do porn stars and cam girls need to be compared at all? We do two completely different jobs. Sometimes, those jobs blend, and they are basically in the same industry, yes. But that doesn't make them the same job. For example; you could be a tank driver in the military, but if you work in intel, does that make you a tank driver because you're both in the military? I feel like this is all some unnecessary competition. Yes, many cam girls make what could be considered amateur porn. That does not make us porn stars. And the only time you will be able to interact with your favorite porn star is pretty much if they make a foray into camming. It just isn't the same. I would say that most of our regulars picked us because of more reasons than the way we ride a dildo. They like our personalities, too. They enjoy hanging out with us online. You don't get to do that with a random girl on a porn tube site. It's just apples and oranges, in my opinion.

I have a regular who often calls me a porn star. It really actually offends me (and If he does it again I will ban his non tipping ass), I feel I am more creative than a pornstar. I spend far more time doing random entertaining things naked than hammering myself in the vagina with dildos and penises. I do make pornographic material, yes. But I don't have sex with anyone but myself and my boyfriend so I feel I am more "softcore". When I think of "porn star" I think of HARDCORE, I think of someone who has sex with other individuals for money and also makes movies where they make a lot more money than I do. I don't like the term "camwhore" either but I honestly prefer it over being called a pornstar. I am a camgirl, and I am an individual . I honestly prefer to call myself a naked comedian :) Like KimKlass said, we are in the same industry, but we are NOT the same jobs. Obviously a doctor and a nurse are two completely different jobs in the same field of work.

I like the naked comedian comment. I think humor is a great way to break the ice in these chat rooms and it is good for the soul. In my dealings with life, I try to use humor when I can. There is one model that I used to interact with a lot. Based on what the other one said, we came with the craziest stories and some guys thought we were dating offline. I will try different jokes with a model and she will either laugh, or tell me to keep my day job. :)

I'm pretty sure my mother and my stuffed animals think I'm more of a "star" then anyone else.
I make amateur porn...but who doesn't in 2012 with a cam phone under the age of 80? Perhaps I have been in the industry to long, perhaps I am just jaded. I am without a doubt not a porn star. I don't have a boss, a producer, an agent, a script, a fluffer, a pretty robe, or any of the other things I have come up in my own head of what would be on a porn set.
I'm going to cum whether I film it or not.
With all this said...when people ask me what I do for a living, and I'm lazy and not interested in explaining anything. I say I do porn.

Ladies: Do you consider yourselves "pornstars?" Why/why not?
Guys: Do you consider all cam models pornstars? Just the nude ones? Just the nude and popular ones? Or would you not use that word to describe any camgirls? Why/why not?

Sorry to piggy back on this old thread, but there is this really popular Pornstar, Victoria Rae Black, on MFC right now...
I'm curious to know everyones thoughts on this, since it does bridge the questions Playboy Megan asks above. Basically, is Victoria both now?

I'm an IDIOT! Never mind  Megan's question really had nothing to do with mine.
If possible, please delete my posts. SORRY.

"Pornography (often abbreviated as "porn" in informal usage) is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual gratification. Pornography may use a variety of media, including books, magazines, postcards, photos, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, film, video, and video games. The term applies to the depiction of the act rather than the act itself, and so does not include live exhibitions like sex shows and striptease."

I guess technically we may be porn stars.

All i know is that I make solo videos and cam solo for guys (and girls) that are my friends.

Most times when i get called a porn star, it's meant in a derogatory way.... ?

First I thing girls can call themselves anything they want. Victoria told me she had only being camming for week, so she'll be a Nude Model/Porn Star for a while in my mind, since I remember her from her Playboy days.

My taxonomy is putting everyone in the category of adult entertainers, and noting that lots of girls work in multiple venues/medias. E.g. Pornstar/stripper, stripper/camgirl, Playboy model/camgirl, porn star/prostitute, and then somebody like Victoria who is maybe a nude model/pornstar/camgirl. Adult entertainer seems to encompass everything.

When I think of a pornstar, I think of a sex actor.
I dont do sex acting... I provide personal companionship and live sexual entertainment.
I see camgirls as a service person and pornstars as performers. Although when I do videos and picture sets, Im making pornography, I'm no where near being a star :p

My opinion is, regardless of where the material appears, it is adult entertainment. If it weren't adult material, you wouldn't have to be 18 to view. Having said that, there IS sites/material & girls out there that include more 'intense' content than others. I agree that, overall, girls who perform on cam, especially MFC, since it is the only site I've ever gone to in the last 2 years, do take the time to get to know many of their fans. That is not something that most big name 'stars' tend to do. There are also many girls on MFC that do not take the time to get to know fans or who get mad & even become quite nasty if they find out people go to other models rooms. I have the emails to prove that. Also, those who appear on cam are not working from a script, although some do plan out what kind of show they will do. As far as labels though, I don't call or consider them porn stars. Like I said, it's ALL adult content no matter where it appears or in what manner it is distributed. I actually consider several girls on MFC friends, a few I consider CLOSE friends. I also don't think that it ultimately matters in what capacity a girl performs or even IF she performs. With the internet, it's a lot easier for those twisted enough to want to do so, to track down a person. Anybody who uses the internet or has ANY information out there in the public domain is technically at risk of someone tracking them down.
