"We sat down with Jane to get an update on the state of the porn (still pretty great), cam girls (less great)"

"There's such a fucking difference. I got into porn right at the perfect time, when porn stars mattered. Porn stars back then, they were big, glamorous. You walked into a room, you turned heads. Everybody knew who you were because they actually had to buy your product or DVDs, everything. Porn was so naughty, but everybody watched it. Now, no one makes money like they did back then even with toy deals and appearances. Now all these cam girls say, "Yeah, I'm a porn star.” But they're not."

Seems like she is putting herself on a pedestal and thinks camming couldn't nearly be the equivalent of being a porn star back in the day

How do you guys feel about her comments?

I'm not a porn star, but that doesn't mean I'm not as good as porn stars. I can tell she's frustrated, but all in all, I don't really care about her opinions. She may be having some whore hierarchy bullshit going on or she may just be trying to elaborate on the over saturation within the industry.

Hahaha that's funny stuff. I don't know many, if any, cam performers who refer to themselves as porn stars. One of the big draws of camming seems to be the "I'm a normal, regular, every-day person! I could be your neighbor with a naughty secret!" The adult industry in general is of course becoming more saturated, it's not like camming is solely to blame for the fall of porn star earnings. :haha: That's just funny. I didn't read the rest of the article, but it sounds like sour grapes from what you quoted. Maybe, just maybe, the internet as a whole and the downfall of paysites plays a part? Free-to-watch video streaming sites like pornhub, where they can actually watch stolen content without monetarily benefiting the ~stars~? What about all the true amateurs who don't even have an interest in getting paid, who simply post their content for fun? Adapt or perish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If porn stars were ~better~ at this work, then they'd have taken over the camming world and replaced it. But I think a lot of us have seen how ummm interesting it can be when they try camming out. They're simply not the same thing. And I, for one, don't want them to be. Yes, we all work in the adult industry, but there's no reason to compare the two side-by-side as though they are the same.

So, how do I feel about her comments? I feel highly amused. Good try. A swing and a miss.

I am not a pornstar, I do not pretend to be one nor am I interested in making actual porn but if a lady wants to thats fine and awesome. I honestly don't care what she thinks or says she doesn't pay my bills, mortgage or anything so whatever..

I get what she's saying. You can be a sex worker without being a porn star. You can even make porn and still not be a porn star. And there's no barrier to being a cam model. If I was to sign up to Chaturbate tomorrow and log on cam for an hour, technically I'd be a cam model (not a successful one, but a cam model nonetheless). Becoming a porn star would take quite a few more steps.

That said, being in porn vs being in camming doesn't make anyone "better" than anyone else. There are plenty of cam girls making just as much money as porn stars and some are almost as well known.

I find it funny that her whole issue seems to be that camgirls tarnish the prestige of the porn star title.

Yeah, I feel like she is using the term "porn star" as a kind of status or achievement in the adult industry, to elevate herself and put down others.

Always pretty easy to drum up drama in jobs that are predominantly held by women. It's like we've been indoctrinated with the idea that there's only so much money to go around for those of us without wieners and taught to see one another as constant competition to be worthy of a buck. Same thing happens in salons. Bummer that she's gotten to that age and still isn't able to chill and be happy with whatever her position is professionally. I hope that women stop buying into the idea that their bank account is limited by the existence of other women at some point.

I agree there is a lot more extreme stuff, but seems to me that was gaining popularity back in the early/mid 90s, well before filesharing/tubesites took most of the money out of it.

A quick and careless reading (or a propensity for finding offense where none was intended) makes it seem like she is somehow denigrating camgirls, but I don't believe that is what she meant.

She may be saying that the porn production companies are just going for shock value now, and "porn star" now means something quite different from "porn star" then (which is what most camgirls are much closer to in terms of performance).

Until this thread I had absolutely no idea whom Jesse Jane is/was and honestly could not give less than a single fuck how popular a porn star she see's herself to be. The only cam models I've ever heard that owned up to being in actual porn described themselves either as retired from the genre or tried camming after their porn careers ended; otherwise, I've yet to run across a single can model who refers to herself as being in porn. Sex work? Yes. Porn? Never heard it. Jesse Jane apparently has an overinflated ego of herself and apparently is a legend in her own mind.

I have. Several in fact.

Perhaps the majority don't regularly, but I have always thought of them as being in porn.

Does seem to be a bit full of herself upon further review. Says she is doing more mainstream work now. Clearly not happy that her gravy train ended, and anyone wanting to fume about this bimbo acting catty towards webcam models need look no further than 8:10 of this podcast.

I have to officially retract this part of my previous post. She does in fact seem to view herself as superior.

Tbf I think she was pretty popular for a period, I've never been the biggest porn fan but I had heard of her
I had never heard of her until today.

She came along too late I think. Just in time to watch the financial bottom drop out of her industry while a sobbing Ron Jeremy begged the masses to stop pirating their shit. Tragic!

Reminds me a little of the band Jackyl. They came along when people were so sick of hair metal that even grunge seemed appealing. If they had come along 10, 15 years earlier, they might have played in front of 1 million in Moscow. Instead they were doomed to a saddening lineup of county fairs and demeaning reality shows.

But when I saw Jesse James Dupree loading his own gear into a bus, a little piece of my heart broke. Can't really muster the same sympathy for Jesse Jane.

Quite the opposite. She was around and very popular when porn stars were glamorized and made good money. Early 2000s. She had her own porn talk show and everything.

She's acting bitter now because things have changed so much that she's no longer in the glory days.

Maybe my viewing experience sort of coloring things. Early 2000s I pretty much abandoned that stuff in favor of LSU, Phil-flash, and the slew of internet models that started popping up around then. I think the last time I went to an adult store and bought anything was in the late 90s. Was so sick of that glamorized look.

Jesse Jane was definitely a pretty big deal about a decade ago. And I think I get what she's trying to say. There was a lot of crossover appeal to porn stars back then. The scene has changed since then, obviously. I dunno -- there is a flavor of gatekeeping to what she's saying, and that's a shame, but it feels more like her statement comes from a place of reminiscence over perceived "glory days" than it is about anything else. I don't think she's full of herself, though, at least as far as what she's saying. She really was the definition of a porn star, back during the short span of years that label seemed to have more clout to it.

I was thinking this too. Are there even new porn stars anymore? Seems like the market in mainstream is too saturated for anyone to stand out much there either now.

Most of the big names I know have been around for a little while. Of course, I'm not really keeping a close eye on things -- mostly just whoever's gone wild on Reddit on a given day.

What do you mean by "porn milky way"? Do your regs fantasize about turning you into a chocolate bar?
All the time. It's my top selling post and I only typed it seven minutes ago.

Now all these cam girls say, "Yeah, I'm a porn star.” But they're not."

Lol we literally don't though, we call ourselves camgirls cause...... that's what we are, you know?

Having done professional porn, all the people I've interacted with inside of it seem pretty damn bitter about the decentralization of porn. Between amateurs and professionals embarking in the sex industry without studios to sites like Pornhub and vicious corporations like MindGeek, the porn industry has sharply changed.

I definitely agree with this. But I still think there are porn stars, I've heard of most, but by no means all, of the people on Guy's list. I'm sure that would have been just as true of a list of porn stars of the 1990, 2000, and 2010. More than most industries, porn is constantly changing, and it will be different a decade from now.

There are camgirls who appear in porn, and seems that most porn stars have a least given camming a shot. Now that we are starting to see more camgirls post videos of themselves on PornHub, I think we'll see more and more of crossover. Is Aspen Rae a porn star or a camgirl or both?
