One of my favourite adaptations is definitely High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. It could have failed so easily.

The biggest travesty in movie adaptations has to be BOTH the 1953 and 2005 attempts to turn War of the Worlds into a movie. It's hard to believe the screen writers even read the novel. :angry4:

I'm still not sure about HHGTTG, the books were part of my childhood reading material. The radio show adaptations I like, but the movie? Considering how long they'd been trying to make it, it turned out to be worse than the TV show. And Marvin just looked and sounded all wrong :-D

What I wish is when the film is inspired by, rather than an adaptation, they don't use the title of the book for the movie. Jonny Mneumonic inspired the film of the same name and Gibson was heavily involved in making the movie, but it was never a movie of the short story.

having said all that....blade runner....the film version of a sf novel by phillip k. dick, remains one of my favorite films, capturing both the mood and complexity of the novel

If you're meaning the version without Harrison Ford mumbling his voice over all the way through I agree with you. The release of the Directors Cut on DVD (1992) without HF mumbling was what convinced me to buy a DVD player. :D
