My name is Anthony and I work for http://www.Manyvids.com as a customer support agent.

I am sure by now you have heard of our website, which has been trending on Twitter and being talked about a lot. We are probably the fastest growing adult website when it comes to giving Camgirls a platform to sell all their content and services, and we make sure you have full control on your content.
Some of you on this Forum already are members and know me via some email exchanges or from Twitter, and some of you might have heard about us and still have questions. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Generate MVlinks for free! We decided to give this service for free to all our models. You can now receive tips on MFC or other camsites, generate a link to your vids on manyvids.com, and give the link to your client. He will then be able to download your vid directly. The link expires and cannot be shared.

A model friend just showed me something she found on the site.

WPxSrxS.png

Neither of these models are signed up on ManyVids, one of them doesn't even have videos to sell.
MV took their Twitter profile pictures and used them to create a voting of some sort which I'm 95% sure the models know nothing about. I just checked and they're doing this with a number of other girls on the Manyvids homepage. I tried voting for a girl to see what happens, and neither before nor after voting you get any information about what the 'winner' is going to get.
MV, can you explain what's going on here?

Hi Lily Marie,

Thanks for the message. We added this voting system in order to grab the attention of some models and camgirls who we think could do well on our website. Our current models and members can vote who they would like to see join our website.
Everytime someone votes, it tweets to the model that someone voted for them to join our site. (We tweet not more than once a day). There isn't really a competition, but more like a fun 1 vs 1 which lasts a couple of days.

If there is a model who doesn't want to be featured there we simply take her down nothing more:) we use the public image of the model on twitter, which is available through Twitter 's public API.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Couldn't you ask their permission first? Posting pictures of a model on the main page of your site might not be the best way to get their attention. I gotta be missing something here.

We haven't had any model we featured complain about it... as soon as they are posted, they get a tweet with a mention which makes them aware right away. A link straight to their twitter is on there as well. They get free advertisement to over 10k users a day for the time they are present. What cam girl wouldn't want free promo and more twitter followers :)

I guess it's just a bit misleading to have pictures of models all over the homepage who aren't part of the site. But, if the models featured are okay with that, then that's their/your business! I think it's just confusing, I definitely thought all those girls had videos for sale when I saw their photos.

Considering the confusion here and from the tweets, maybe it would make sense to either rethink this feature or to improve the messaging around it. From what I can find, the tweet is something like 'your fans are voting for you @manyvids http://www.manyvids.com ' . Voting for what? A tweet like that coming out of nowhere with little information can lead to confusion (as I've seen it happen before) . Perhaps if you changed to 'your fans are voting for you @manyvids saying they want to see you there http://www.manyvids.com' , it would be better (and it's still less than 100 characters so you can tweet at the model). I would also suggest using an URL that points to an explanation of the voting and how you get the pictures to reduce the confusion even further.

I agree, or in any case it would get the wrong kind of attention from them.

Seems a weird way to go about it. Not in the least because Freya Lane uses a different MFC handle.

Speaking of promotion are you inclined to advertise every model on the site?

Willingly seeking more exposure!

Why not use the resources you are using for featuring girls who aren't even selling videos on your site and didn't give you permission to use their photos to featuring models who DO use your site and get them some promotion. I would think creating a site that takes care of its current models and generates income for them would create more buzz and be more of a factor in a new model joining the site then you essentially stealing their photos and displaying them on your site without their knowledge.

Just my :twocents-02cents:

Seems shady and like a slap in the face to the models who already use your site.

Totally with you on that!

I was considering setting up a ManyVids account but have been avoiding it for two reasons

One: ya'll keep sending me spammy emails.

Two: I'm now aware you're using models pics without their permission. We do not have to chase you down to ask you to stop posting OUR content. YOU are not allowed. This is ours. This is a big no-no and if you really thought that models would be ok with this, ya'll need to re-evaluate a bit.

If I was a successful model whose attention you were trying to get and saw that you had jacked my picture and posted it on your site and were using it to promote your site, I would do the OPPOSITE of joining many vids.

I'd love to see you stop doing this, and would consider setting up an account there if I saw you responding pro-actively to this feedback.

I will try and respond to everyone in this message, so bare with me guys :)
One thing about our team here at Manyvids, your opinions matter a lot and we are very responsive whenever you have questions and issues.
Missy_Lollypop, I will answer your question at the end of the post :)

We had a meeting this morning to discuss about this feature, and we felt we needed to clarify a couple of things regarding it. In any case, before I start, I wanted to inform you that our homepage design will be changing, and we will be featuring a list of 20-30 current models on the site rotating every day, pushing the current new girl promo to the right side. Now to explain the promo feature:
  • - We are using the model's Twitter Profile pic, which we grab from the Public Twitter API (this is a public directory of models, given to us by Twitter and it is Public. We get the Twitter profile image and the twitter handle.). We are not stealing any pictures from a model's gallery. Just wanted to make that clear... We would never put content that violates a model's privacy!
  • - We do not use these as a promo tool for our site to get users. We have 0 advertising on our site, and tweet directly to the girl in question the first time we put it up, informing her that she is featured

Now having said that, we greatly respect the opinion of our current models, and seeing a lot of your comments made us rethink how we will display and go forward with this. As indicated above, our new homepage which will be going live soon will have a box with 20-30 current models of our website. This will be in the same location as the promo feature that is currently live. This will definitely help users find models more easily, and give some exposure to some of our girls who normally dont get as much exposure.

As for the promo for new models, it will be moved to the side, and we will change the messages being tweeted as indicated by a user a little higher up in the posts. I think a more descriptive message would be more appreciated, and would eliminate the confusion. We will also add it to our FAQ section.

One thing about us, we love what we do. The reason we started this was to really provide a platform with EVERYTHING you need, and with amazing customer support. No limits when it comes to advertising your other sites and venues, and a responsive team of developers who are constantly working hard at developing new features, and improving our site.

Missy_Lollypop, the reason you are receiving emails regarding our models, is because you have signed up on our site on August 20th, 2014. We do not send spam emails to random people, that is against our philosophy... If you want to opt out of the emails being sent regarding new model features, let me know. I can delete you from our user database. We would definitely love to have you join our site though :)

Thanks for all the constructive feedback. You all rock!

Anthony

I'm going to stop you right there Antony, that's not how copyright works, not even via twitter API (that's not how any of this works)

I quote from https://twitter.com/tos:
Twitter has an evolving set of rules for how ecosystem partners can interact with your Content (via API). These rules exist to enable an open ecosystem with your rights in mind. But what’s yours is yours – you own your Content (and your photos are part of that Content).

as you are one of their 'ecosystem partners' here's a bit of what's in the API rules (which you would have to follow)

Your Service should not:
confuse or mislead users about the source or purpose of your application.

Using Twitter Content. Get the users’ permission before:
using their content on a commercial durable good or product (for example, using a Tweet on a t-shirt or a poster or making a book based on someone’s Tweets);
creating an advertisement that implies the sponsorship or endorsement on behalf of the user; or
using content in a manner that is inconsistent with the Display Requirements and would require the user’s permission under applicable law, including without limitation uses of Twitter Content that features the name, likeness, or identifying persona of a person.

I think it's a disgrace a cammodel needs to be the one pointing this out to you. Highly unprofessional and not very good for the cool points in camland.

I'm all about ManyVids!
Go MV GO!!

Hey, I'm just thankful that MV exists just like MFC! Without those sites, cam models would not do as good.

It's a cool platform, I get new fans all the time and sold A LOT of memberships on my personal website because of ManyVids. To be featured on the main page of a site, is a compliment and a proof that you are doing something right in this industry. I had never heard of Amber Cutie, saw her on ManyVids, followed her on twitter, discovered this forum and now I'm here.

Let's stay positive and look at the chain reaction that occurs when being featured on the main page of a site.

Keep it up ManyVids! I'm very happy you guys are around :hello2:

I wouldn't think it would be very difficult to send a model a message asking for their permission before snagging their picture. I, for one, would be incredibly humbled if a site approached me and showed active interest in a business partnership.

If this is some sort of automated aggregation of model profile pictures, it's not exactly as complimentary as your company is playing it off to be. It implies that your company is kinda just grabbing random pics and seeing which one draws in the most viewers, then automatically tweeting them to see if they want to actually work for you.

This is an effective business strategy, I'm sure. There is a distinct line, however, between business process and business ethics. Copyright laws aside, one of the *last* things a model wants is for someone, anyone, to be using their content without their permission or knowledge.

I sincerely hope your company has another meeting to reflect on the feedback received here. It seems like your site has a lot to offer, it would be a little more comforting to know that you were working actively with models to provide the best quality service possible rather than trying to lure us in with our own content and unsolicited exposure.

I have no interest in using MV at this time, as I have a website for my exclusive content and the only videos I sell on MFC are exclusive for a fanclub type thing for tokens... BUT!

This whole voting for a model to join MV things feel so gross and slimy, like a used car salesman on a hot Florida day trying to sell you a 95 ford escort as "vintage"

For the most part, everyone knows about MV, and it's talked about here in public and models only, as well as twitter a lot. If I got a tweet saying people were voting for me to give part of my money to a site, in a competition I had no knowledge of using my picture without my permission I would instinctively feel like never working with that site. I don't like feeling pressured to give my business to someone and I'm pretty sure almost everyone feels the same, high pressure sales have never worked.

This is high pressure to the max, because now you are bringing members and voting into it and the model has to then tell everyone they aren't interested.
Twitter picture and all that no permission stuff set aside, this is just shitty sales tactics that are likely to lose your company face in the eyes of the community... and from what I've seen you don't deserve to lose face. You're doing well but you are new and this was a mistake.

I really love ManyVids! I think it's well designed, it has so many great features, and I appreciate how dedicated the staff seems to be. However, this issue has always been the single downside to me. Using models' pictures without permission is downright skeevy. It's also a shame that it's the most prominent thing on the page instead of the people who actually want to work with you, but you did address that you're changing that.

I guess the biggest disappointment here is that you're not really listening. I sent you an email in the past with a small suggestion, and you implemented the suggestion the very next day. I was really impressed! So few internet companies listen to their clients that it made me feel really good about ManyVids. Here, though, the overwhelming opinion seems to be negative, and you basically brushed it off, saying that you'll just make it smaller. No, I really think everyone here is saying they want it GONE. You mentioned clarifying your aim in the FAQ and tweets, but essentially you're just going to explain better why you're using their pictures without permission. I know you mean well, you seem like a good people, but please take another look at this thread and realize that this is a feature models (and members) don't want. You've admitted your website generates little traffic that models don't bring in themselves, so keeping the models happy seems really important.

Pretty much echoing what Natalia said...

I love the usability of the site, the chance to make money while I sleep essentially and the support staff - I also made a suggestion (to extend the location blocking from states to include countries) and not only was it implemented but I got a personal email telling me when it had been done. That sort of attention and service from the support on a site is very much appreciated.

But I also have found it strange that you would advertise prominently for girls who are not part of the site. Its the first thing people see when they hit the homepage and if they click the girls name they get sent AWAY from the site itself. Great advertising for these girls and their twitter feeds (and even their own private sites or other video stores they use to sell clips - anything really that they link to on twitter), but terrible for the girls who are part of Manyvids and actually making you money. It always seemed like a bizarre and stupid marketing ploy that could potentially drive paying traffic away from the site and its made even worse when you find out that these girls didnt consent to being a part of this feature... Don't make it less prominent. Don't explain it further. Get rid of it completely.

Invest in advertising the site itself and the girls using it - the more sales, traffic and words about how user friendly it is for cam girls the more likely the other girls you are trying to attract will join and the more likely the girls you have already on the site will stick around... :twocents-02cents:

I agree completely, considering that what are selling and promoting is intellectual property, I find astonishing that you have so little regard for others intellectual property. How would you like if I used the video previews of manyvids on my website to promote selling other porn videos?

What you are doing is illegal full stop. In case anybody is interested here is the damage section of the US copyright law.

§ 504. Remedies for infringement: Damages and profits5

(a) In General. — Except as otherwise provided by this title, an infringer of copyright is liable for either —

(1) the copyright owner's actual damages and any additional profits of the infringer, as provided by subsection (b); or

(2) statutory damages, as provided by subsection (c).

(b) Actual Damages and Profits. — The copyright owner is entitled to recover the actual damages suffered by him or her as a result of the infringement, and any profits of the infringer that are attributable to the infringement and are not taken into account in computing the actual damages. In establishing the infringer's profits, the copyright owner is required to present proof only of the infringer's gross revenue, and the infringer is required to prove his or her deductible expenses and the elements of profit attributable to factors other than the copyrighted work.

(c) Statutory Damages. —

(1) Except as provided by clause (2) of this subsection, the copyright owner may elect, at any time before final judgment is rendered, to recover, instead of actual damages and profits, an award of statutory damages for all infringements involved in the action, with respect to any one work, for which any one infringer is liable individually, or for which any two or more infringers are liable jointly and severally, in a sum of not less than $750 or more than $30,000 as the court considers just. For the purposes of this subsection, all the parts of a compilation or derivative work constitute one work.

I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt and assume that infringement wasn't willful, cause in that case the damages go up to $150,000/image.

Well due to popular demand, we decided to pull the promo and rethink our recruiting strategy. A lot of you girls made very valid points, and we definitely thank you for that.
Even though we got positive feedback from those who discovered our site through our promo and were very happy about being featured on our website, our current model's opinions matter the most. Thank you all for the great comments, and constructive criticism :)

Now since I missed my lunch and I am starving, I can definitely go for some sushi! :crybaby:
