I'm guessing some of them are at work or their wives are within hearing, so they're hiding their activity, but what pisses off many models is when those members expect the model to type everything just for their lame arses

Nordling definitely nailed it. Guys watching on their phones might also lack sound, but truly I think some members simply get off on saying "I don't have sound" so that the model will have to cater specifically/pay special attention to them (i.e. act as a court stenographer for everything that's said). I'm sure some people actually don't have sound--but show some common courtesy and respect and just deal with it without creating a total ordeal for the model (although creating an entire alternate/unrelated conversation for the "no sound people" might be pretty hilarious).

I have heard a couple humorous stories that go like so:

Member: I am deaf/I have no speakers
Model (speaking aloud): Okay! Member, I am going to read all your PMs to me aloud for the whole room to hear.
Member: *leaves*

I suspect that a large amount of those members do indeed have sound and have some sort of typing fetish. I also imagine a number of them may be poor at speaking English (or whatever language is happening) and can only understand the model if she types instead of speaks.

I think alot of time there are others around and for some reason they don't own headphones....But I refuse to type to them, my cam sits on top of my laptop so even just typing PMs can annoy ppl in my room since i guess it sounds like a "crazy keyboard stampede". They can but a headset if they want to hear me but not have their wife/girlfriend hear.

I can think of a few reasons:

* slow internet connection that can handle the video stream but audio is unbearable to hear (someone might hear you every couple of seconds etc)
* foreign members that would understand you better if you'd type. As a non-native English speaker, written speech is easier to comprehend than spoken one. It's not that they can't speak or understand English, but everybody has a different accent, that may be easier or not to understand.
* the fact that not all members are celibate or are living alone. I can't find an excuse for them b/c a headset won't set them back much.
* the members that want special attention, these ones are usually the ones that would type a lot in pm.

One other thing, a few years back, when I started camming, there was no way you could broadcast and have the sound on. Some camsites didn't even have a mic button, not to mention the webcams were of such low quality that the mic couldn't be used without making someone's ears bleed. So to answer your question, camming was possible before, without the use of audio, it was just harder, being that you had to keep your keyboard handy and use it from darn awkward positions.

Well I don't know who'd perv with their family in the same room and the only thing they'd wanna apologize is wearing a headset.

I assume they are dressed when they do it, and have the screen pointed away from the other person. The probably have another tab to switch to open as well, for emergency what are you doing moments.

There's a few reasons I don't have the sound on.
!. Although I'm can hear ok I have difficulty with the tones of some people, especially on the phone, radio etc and background noise (like music) only makes it worse.
2. All the rooms that have music up too high. Doesn't do my tinnitus much good.
3. Open back door policy in my place. Friends pull up and just walk in unannounced.
4.I find different accents hard to understand. While I might understand 1 person with, say, an Irish accent another speaking with the same accent is unintelligible to me.
5. I'm watching a show on tv while perving.
Having said that, when I find a model who's company I might enjoy, I will at least listen to see it I can understand her, if not then it's just easier to say I don't have sound rather than explain these things above.
As to when it gets down to the nit and gritty I've heard all the fake moans and groans before and would rather listen to the scenario going on in my own mind.

well for me since hearing a pleasant voice and interesting convo is 90 percent of the reason why i use MFC, i cant imagin it without sound... what would be the point? but there are deaf models, so why not deaf members too? but if you can hear at all, asking the model to type is plain rude IMO.

if you cant use/dont have headphones feel free to learn to lip read. it isnt that hard tbh.
ashamed of what you are watching/listening to? then just dont do it. no one is forcing you to look at pretty ladies, so man up.
if you dont have a sound card/speakers/ at all, then wtf is wrong with your computer and why are you still using that TI to surf the net?

if it is just your preference to not have the sound on, thats fine. no problem, but again, that isnt the model's problem. enjoy the view, type away, but please remember that typing and speaking use two different sections of the brain so for her (or him on non mfc sites) typing one part of a convo to the one or two random dudes is time and resource consuming to such an extent that it isnt polite to ask.

One way to politely avoid the deaf or deceitful member is to say your typing is horrible and very slow so it takes too much time away from the rest of the room.

Their computer issues or other scenarios aren't your responsibility.

I'm a fast typer, so what I might do is type a response just once, and include "I can't keep typing" at the end...lol. And from that point on, anything he asks...I'll answer out loud while nodding my head 'yes' or 'no'.

If you're trying to be quiet because your girlfriend/wife is in the other room, then put on headphones (in my room there will always be sounds of me talking, and music playing), or take me private where I'll gladly type all of my responses and give you one-on-one attention, or don't sneak around in the first place when there's someone in the next room.

Funny story: This guy had no speakers and had been talking to me for about a week- tipping and pming. He was very luvvy duvvy... sappy etc.

So one day I'm getting a bunch of 3 token tips from regulars who LOVE to throw my count off by tippign odd numbers. I am LAUGHING and cussin gthem out, smiling, flipping the bird etc.. its very clearly a situation where i am NOT REALLY MAD but just pissed i have to count, and talking about how i hate odd numbers.

He sends me a pm and tells me he is shocked, that he has speakers today and he never thought I would be the type to be so ungreateful for small tippers... that I am rude and ungreatful. I try to explain to him that its a running joke, and that my members tipping these amounts KNOW i am joking, they are deliberately poking me. I ask them to type in chat to confirm this and they of course do. The guy COULD NOT WRAP his head around it.. and left.

Sound may be an issue with some members as a recent Flash update wasn't so friendly with all browsers and would randomly die and kill sound. Or sound would suddenly stop and when you reset your speaker you would get a 'machine gun' noise instead of regular sound. I think they fixed it pretty quick with another Flash update, but I know a couple of models who had problems with members sound for a week or so.

I first started chatting with girls on XHam since that was where I always went to look for porn videos. I would never expect someone to type just because I can't hear them but the sound there rarely ever worked for me so I finally checked out a few other sites and decided on MFC. I don't have any problems with the sound on MFC so I have stayed there. I wouldn't stay on a site with continual sound issues and if I turn the sound off on my end then that's my problem.

I very occasionally turn the sound off when I check out girls on Mfc. One is if I'm staying at someones house and am browsing through, sound does travel... And the other is... well, again, if there are other people in the house who don't know what I'm doing. The only other times is if I'm literally barely watching and am listening to music or something and just have it on in the background.

I'm not a regular visiter of cam models though and I would NEVER expect a model to type to me if I don't have sound. That just seems, well, ridiculous to me! Unless you have a direct question of something you want to tip for and you say with the question that you don't have sound.

The headphones thing... well, you can buy headphones for a couple of pounds. There's no excuse not to have any if you regularly visit myfreecams whilst having people in the house if you actually want to interact with models. I reckon most guys have them, just are too lazy/can't be bothered to get them out.

Once in a while when i'm sitting in classes I'll pop up an MFC room. I like to have the volume muted in those situations. Nothing gets a room full of petroleum students looking at you like having a woman screaming through an orgasm. It only takes that happening once to learn to mute that stinking tablet! :shock:

I have had this problem from time to time. Often it's the model's connection because one model's sound is fine but I can only hear an occasional syllable for another. In that case I typically mute audio. When this occurs in a room where I'm a regular, I let the model know that I have no sound, but I don't ask her to do anything special. It can be amusing to guess what's she's saying based on the member chat or what she's doing.

instead of asking a model to type in the room just for me, I participate in chat as much as I can with the other guys or I stay quiet.
if Im not a reg in a room when my connection goes to crap, and don't want to participate in chat with other members, I move to another model that I know types in chat because her english is not so good
