my roomie is watching Red State and i was barely paying attention. until the sheriff shot that kid. now i must rewatch. i saw the kevin smith stand up interview thing on it, didn't realize it would be such a tearjerker.

I loved it up until the deus ex machina ending. In one of his stand-up/Q&A sessions, he talks about what he wanted to do with the original ending. It sounds sooooooo much better than what they went with. But had they gone with the ending he wanted to, it would gone from being a $5m dollar to a $25m movie (he wanted the ending to be the coming of the rapture and the religious doods being killed by the horsemen of the apocalypse).

i got a kick out of the trumpets. a bloodier ending would have been nice, but i don't think the coming of the horsemen would have fit in with the humor and previous twists in plot. it would have made the whole thing too unrealistic for me, and it seems a sudden Rapture would be more "deus ex machina" than what happened?

I dunno, the whole film was implicitly foreshadowing a rapture ("You better believe I fear God" etc.), even if it's something you'd never actually EXPECT to see. The ending they went with just felt tacked on to me. It was still better than Cop Out

I'm looking forward to Hit Somebody too. If it really is gonna be his last film, hopefully it'll be a good one.
