Norwegian Marte Deborah Dalelv was in Dubai on business trip when raped
She reported rape to police but was charged for having sex outside marriage
She has now been sentenced to 16 months in prison
Her alleged rapist was sentenced to three months less prison time than her
Under UAE law, rapists can only be convicted if either the perpetrator confesses or if four adult Muslim males witness the crime.

Under the Sharia-influenced laws, sex before marriage is completely forbidden and an unmarried couple holding hands in public can be jailed.

Foreigners jailed in Dubai are deported immediately after completing their sentences.

I do not understand why every woman does not leave places like this, and let the men see how valuable they truly are. Would any models actually live, work, or vacation in a country like this?

I know people who live in Dubai...they are not Muslim and not of Middle Eastern descent..and they actually love it there...they have a good life...and they always invite family and friends to visit and everyone who goes also has only good things to say... but I guess if you're wealthy enough, almost any country can be nice to live in. The people I mentioned have the option of living in the UK and another Western European country..but they choose Dubai

I don't know why a single female would intentionally go ANYWHERE that is ruled by Islamic laws, much less drink at bars without a damn good friend or bodyguard. :snooty:

Under Islamic law in the United Arab Emirates, drinking without an alcohol licence is also supposedly a crime.

That story is both sad and appalling. I would NEVER have ANY desire to live nor visit ANY country with laws like that. (jailing a rape victim because they had sex outside of a marriage) I don't care why they have that law either. Just plain stupid in my opinion, and it really pissed me off reading about it.

Moreover, why does the US do business with these countries where women are treated like animals?

The US and other western countries do business with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and other Middle Eastern countries with abominable human rights records because of one thing. Money. More specifically, oil money. It just serves to highlight the hypocrisy that saw Saddam and Gadaffi ousted.

As to why this poor woman was in the country, I'd surmise that it was for the same reason. Dubai is awash with money and private individuals don't pay any income tax on their earnings. I gather it's easy to live the high life if you at least make a show of toeing the line in public. Every now and then a westerner is made an example of, presumably to placate the Muslim hardliners, but on the whole the UAE is one of the more liberal gulf states.

I just hope the Norwegian government has the baksheesh ready to speed her exit from the country and she can start to put this terrible episode behind her.

Because when women are raised in an environment like that, they view it as normal. It is familiar to them, the default - and frequently, they uphold sexism laws and thoughts just as much as the men do.

It's not just a man-oppressing-woman thing; it's a culture, reinforced by both genders.

Though I have no idea why a liberated woman would want to go back to that, ever. Shudder.

Sharia law is essentially Islamic law, and I think that, while many Muslims live their religion peacefully, the Muslim faith in general encourages oppression of women and extreme legalism.

Seeing anybody of any gender treated this way makes me sad. It is even worse that people born into this may actually believe they did something wrong if it happened to them. It reminds me of when the young girl had people saying she dressed too old for age, and using that as an excuse. Too many people blame the victim.

Dubai is amazing. Their culture and laws are somewhat strange but still an awesome place to live or vacation. Much more lenient than some muslim countries I've been to. The woman was pardoned and is headed home.

Money and general ignorance. People that go to work in these countries generally do so because they can make a lot of tax free money in a short time, depending on their profession of course. Also, I blame Dubai's public relations that make it appear to be an enlightened western style country when it is not.

A female friend of mine worked in Saudi Arabia for a few years. She would have left earlier after finding out how repressive it was for women there and she knew this going into the job but thought how bad can a couple of years be being cooped up on a compound when she would be earning much more money and tax free.

In many ways, Dubai is worse. They pretend to be westernized. Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam, you generally know what you are getting into.

You could not pay me enough to visit any country like this. My dad has told me so many stories from his deployments that I would rather have my finger nails plucked off one at a time with no numbing agents than to visit any country like that. The risk is not worth it.

The starting wage for many petroleum jobs is higher there too. Never been tempted.
