It's just fucked up.

I watch a ton of nature shows and knew a bit about orcas, but even if you're an expert it's fucking tragic to really see these animals show crazy emotion.

Yep, totally fell for it yesterday when it popped up on my Netflix page. There are some pretty brutally sad scenes in the film--and it's just a rough movie to watch as an animal-lover. Some of it was pretty interesting--and the documentary was pretty well done, but I'd have trouble recommending this to anyone without giving them a stern warning about what they were getting into--because it's certainly fucked up on many levels--especially the orca capturing scene (wow). :icon-cry:

Of course it's tragic, but that just makes it even more important to watch in my opinion. I thought it was well-made and interesting. Very sad though :icon-cry: The footage of trainers being attacked was really scary as well.

I'm really glad that I did not decide to watch this last night as I was marathoning movies alone on Christmas Eve, then. :?

Here's another to add to your must watch/don't watch list: Parrot Confidential from the "Nature" series on PBS. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes ... tial/8496/

I was always curious about parrots, knew they had a long lifespan, but never thought they had any level of intelligence or feelings, especially as compared to dogs and cats. Their relatives shit on my car, for chrissakes!!!

It was nicely done, and really opened my eyes. Although there are some nice moments, it is a bittersweet viewing. I'm glad I watched it.

***SPOILER ALERT***

You may need to have a box of Kleenex handy ;)

ha, yeah, saw this a few days too late as well. Oh man. The pain in their crys & calls to each other is so heartbreaking. I was floored to see the reality of their tank's dimensions. So cruel. I found the older man who had helped capture the baby orcas in the wild realizing it was so wrong to be the most pignant part.

I'm glad I watched despite my being disgusted at mankind after it.

Yep! My roommate and I watched it recently, and both ended up crying our eyes out. My family took me to Sea World once as a kid, and it always made me feel weird, like it was fucked up. But it wasn't until I was older that I realized WHY I felt that way.

Fuck Sea World, their business is disgustingly inhumane and dangerous to their employees, human and animal.

I've been to sea world a ton of times as a kid. I loved it. They really sell it to you that the animals are better off in their park than they are in the wild. I saw shows go off without a hitch every time. It was magical seeing all these animals from everywhere being taken care of. The park representatives always made sure to let the viewers know that the animals are their friends.

It wasn't until I was already an adult that I started reading about marine biology and migratory animals and realized that this place is wrong. These animals have a need to swim and travel so much and to keep them from doing that is so stressful. I'd think it's like having to pee but never being near a toilet for the rest of your life. That's how I think it would feel. Just extreme anxiousness to go do something that you have to do, but being unable to do it at all!

It's the saddest fucking shit ever and I feel SO stupid for falling for it for so long.

Comic Book Girl on youtube, who does a lot of comic book and all things science fiction reviews, just posted her Top 7 movies of the year. One of them was the documentary Blackfish. She pretty much sums up my thoughts on it quite well.

She starts talking about this one at 6 minutes and 10 seconds in. Otherwise just click the link and it will auto start there.

So just to confirm...this has nothing to do with Brynden Tully???

If you've read the books you know where I'm coming from.

oh MAN, so good.

Perhaps to that end, SeaWorld, in what Kirby calls “a desperate move,” recently took out a full-page advertisement in seven major newspapers condemning “inaccurate reports” while reiterating its purported advocacy for killer whales and their humane treatment. Whether or not these ads will save SeaWorld’s sinking stock price, which has dropped as much as 25 percent in the wake of “Blackfish,” remains to be seen.

Sorry, had to use a cached version of the story as Forbes has already pulled the article for some unknown reason.

It is good to see that a documentary has changed the public consciousness in a good way.

Hahaha this sounds familiar.

http://www.digitaljournal.com/news/...-did-seaworld-skew-online-poll/article/365022

When you can't win in the court of public opinion, then skew the results. According to the Orlando Business Journal (OBJ), SeaWorld may have done just that to win a poll vote against the documentary Blackfish.

The poll, which was hosted by OBJ, asked people to answer the question: Has CNN's 'Blackfish' documentary changed your perception of SeaWorld? As of this afternoon, an overwhelming 85% of the vote said no.

But according to the OBJ's Richard Bilbao, "Something's fishy with this SeaWorld/'Blackfish' poll."

Bilbao expressed surprise over "one single Internet Protocol Address (IP Address)" that "accounted for more than 54 percent of the votes, or about 180 of the total 328 vote."

The owner of that address reports Bilboa, is SeaWorld.com and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.

If SeaWorld is hoping to portray itself as an aboveboard facility with nothing to hide or fear, epic failure. Particularly as it lacked the gumption to mask its own IP address before engaging in underhanded internet antics.

Just thought I'd post an article that has a bit of an opposite viewpoint toward the documentary. It's a bit long so I'll just post the link if anyone wants to read it.
http://melissaasmith.hubpages.com/hub/blackfish-film

a sea world sponsored tweet showed up on my news feed yesterday saying
"please don't believe the activist hype, we love our animals."
or something like that. I just thought it was interesting

TOTAL OFF TOPIC: hot damn that girl is HOT and very well spoken, such a turn on!! Want to touch the hiney...

ON TOPIC:

I'm going to avoid this film, I'd rather focus on what I can change i.e avoiding parks with these animals or making a donation to a foundation fighting for the animals then being in mental anguish for days on end after watching the movie. My hair dresser talked non stop about this movie and about crying for days after watching it. I'm sure I'd react the same way, animal abuse commercials can have that effect on me.
