"Ewwy"...Lol. My dad says this one often and it's just so hard to take him seriously when he does. I know it's a habit from when my siblings and I were little, but we're all adults now so he doesn't have a reason to say it anymore.

The US seems to have cornered the market on these kind of phrases and words, most have which have come back over the Atlantic

Although my main rule of thumb is words that have been "softened up" or made acceptable I detest! Such as Boce's list!!

LOL.. I guess some of you guys havent been mommy and daddy yet... These are kiddy words that we "assimilate" despite our not wanting to, while raising the hatchlings. Sometimes after raising 2 or more a few years apart, you tend to forget the company you're in and they slip into adult conversations.
I seem to have been able to kick the habit, but not before I used them many times in th wrong places.

Now however, :( I seem to be working "MFC speak" into some daily convos. Imagine the look of "WTH" if you were 'not of MFC' or camlife and you heard a guy say "Mmmm teeeps me to do that BB's !!"

Life is a parade. You might as well enjoy it and get the lolz where u find them.

See... and I was thinking ouchie wasn't so bad... unless it's used as an exclamation of pain... or something. I dunno.

And never is such a strong term. A lot of people may use these words when dealing with kids. <_<

Not a word so much that men should not use, but a word that haunts me, b/c I can't seem to not use it or find any good alternative much of the time. It absolutely frustrates me. "Absolutely", something I don't like about the word, but continue to use it.
Regardless is another. Any opinion why these words are unpleasant? Or is it just me?

Well, actually, I don't get this stuff. Why would you talk like that to your kids?

Speak like a human being when you communicate with your children, it will make them develop a better understanding of language and a clearer reasoning. Making up stories and words for children just limits their brains. Did you know that new born babies have the most connections in the brain, but that the body then cuts off the ones that are not in use. This is why children need to start thinking and using their brains as early as possible. Of course you don't talk to a child as if you're talking to one of your mates, but the best way to speak to children is to talk properly and use words that they might not understand (because they'll ask you what it means and build vocabulary). It is also very good to actually explain how things really are, don't explain away things you don't know or don't think they'll understand with fairies and unicorns.

Once when I was little I asked my kindergarten teacher why babies get baptised. She told me it's to keep the ogars from taking them. Luckily my mother was there to correct her, otherwise I'd be getting nightmares because I'm not baptised. I was only about 5 years old, but when mom told me the real reason I understood it completely.

I think people underestimate kids.

Sorry, off topic rant. Just really had to say that :P

It really fucks me off too, Its not a choo-choo, its a fucking train and you'll miss it
Its not a woof-woof, Its a dog and it'll tear your arm off
The puss-puss will scrach your eyes out if you pull its tail..

WE protect our children from LIFE, Why? Its worked for centuries why would it fail now? If we keep circumventing natural selection we are doomed as a race, no matter how "intelligent" we think we are

Haha, what is it with this profession and getting proposals? :P

But, yeah, why are we shielding kids from reality? It just makes it all that much harder when you grow up and have to face it!

I tend to think using kiddy words isn't shielding kids, it's age appropriate. If a 3 year old child comes in from playing with a fresh cut on their knee crying their eyes out, believing they're going to die because they've never felt that kind of pain or saw blood coming out of their body before... the term boo-boo along with a soothing tone seems way more comforting than saying "Ah crap, that laceration might need stitches."

P.S. Alice sometimes reminds me a bit of the character Temperance on Bones. :)

Edited to add, lying to kids to freak them out like the baptism thing isn't cool, but I still think kids should have a chance to believe in things like the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Imaginations sometimes need to be cultured.

The word "Boo-boo" doesn't exist in Swedish, we don't have a word like it - we simply say we hurt ourselves. Works great.

And I'm not saying that you shouldn't tell stories to your kids! It's very important for kids (and humans in general) to be allowed to imagine and fantasise - the difference is if you mix the stories with reality or not and if you are giving false answers. Just telling a story is fine, but telling a story instead of answering a question is essentially lying to your kid.

Hmm, is the Temperance Brennan thing good or bad? xD

I appreciate what you are saying but i just cannot agree, if we are to take your example, a "boo-boo" (grrr) might need stitches,it might not but its healthy for kids to fall over and get hurt, they bounce straight back up

They live, they learn.. Even if you look back now we all used to play, get hurt and graze knees, whatever. Its a proper learning curve

You don't say "I just went poopy", right?

You use it in place of shit, except I haven't seen you refer to actual shit yet, so I don't know if you use "poopy" in that sense.

On Topic:

"I miss (insert boy-band from the 90's here)"

"Bones" is the series, and it isn't bad in english. I'm not sure most of it would translate very well though.

I know the series.

I also know English, in case you've missed that. Why would I need it translated?

Just saying the language is sublte, you would have to watch it in English as a translation would just be weird.

Again, WHY the hell WOULDN'T I watch it in English??

Edit: Also, are you bilingual? I am, and I know that anything (except some cases of word-play) can be translated if the translator is good enough.

Gee, maybe "some cases of word play" might be the reason I'm suggesting that it would not translate well.

No, I think you brought up the translating because I'm from Sweden and you have a completely twisted idea about my country. There was no reason what so ever to even bring up how it would translate. Obviously I know English, I just discussed parenting and the physics of the infant brain IN ENGLISH!

Also, I've fucking SEEN the show, there's nothing about it that would suggest it's not suitable to translation by a skilled translator. When I say "some cases of word-play" I simply mean that the translated word might sound differently or simply not have the double-meaning it has in English - meaning that one sentence might not make as much sense when translated. That, however, doesn't mean that the show itself wouldn't translate. You speak as if you think English is the only complicated language in the world and no other language possibly could be nuanced and complex enough to measure up.
