I love this woman!

Patti Smith is the shit. Did you know that the verses she wrote on "Because The Night" (the non-Springsteen bits) were about Fred Smith of the MC5? :geek:

My favourite version of "Because The Night" though is this one. Springsteen playing with The Roots (!).

I didn't know that but you learn something new everyday. I'm currently listening to the version you posted and loving the piano, very nice.

I've become a wee bit obsessed with this tune today. "Video Games" was a nice pop single, but "Off To The Races" is the kind of song that some artists will spend their entire career trying to write, and most of them won't even come close.
This is as sophisticated and subversive a pop song as I've heard in years. This is the kind of lyrical introspection that you don't expect to hear from an artist yet to release their first album. And the confidence with which she shapes and delivers those lyrics is something to behold. It's clear she can sing, but she can (kinda, sorta) rap too? Pfffft. This lady is crazy talented.
Part of the appeal is the way her music is packaged. There's a mystique that surrounds everything she does. Those words coming out of that mouth; the way she bends those words to her own will so that they conform to whatever off-kilter rhyme or rhythm she feels the song dictates; the sheer decadence of the production (it's as if Kanye West had a hand in this); the dichotomy of the persona she projects on (and through) her music - one part assured, independent woman; one part fragile, dependent, spiralling mess of beauty - pop stars are supposed to be interesting, right? This chick is fucking fascinating.

Here be the lyrics:

My old man is a bad man but I can't deny the way he holds my hand
And he grabs me he has me by my heart
He doesn't mind I have a Las Vegas past. He doesn't mind I have a LA crass way about me
He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart

Swimming pool glimmering darling white bikini off with my red nail polish
Watch me in the swimming pool bright blue ripples. You sipping, sipping on your black Cristal, yeah

Light of my life, fire of my loins
Be a good baby do what I want
Light of my life, fire of my loins.
Gimme them gold coins. Gimme them coins.

And I'm off to the races. Cases of Bacardi chasers. Chasing me all over town.
Cuz he knows I'm wasted, facing time again in Rikers Island and I won't get out.
Because I'm crazy baby.
I need you to come here and save me.
I'm your little scarlet starlet singing in the garden. Kiss me on my open mouth.
Ready for you.

My old man is a tough man, but he got a soul as sweet as blood red jam.
And he shows me he knows me, every inch of my tar black soul.
He doesn't mind I have a flat, brokedown life.
In fact, he says he thinks it's what he might like about me, admires me,
The way I roll like a rolling stone.

Likes to watch me in the glass-room, bathroom, trapdoor mama, slippin' on my red dress, putting on my makeup.
Glass-room perfume, cognac lilac fumes. Says it feel like heaven to him.

Light of his life, fire of his loins.
Keep me forever, tell me you want me
Light of your life, fire of your loins.
Tell me you want me, gimme them coins.

And I'm off to the races, cases of Bacardi chasers.
Chasing me all over town.
Cuz he knows I'm wasted, facing time again in Rikers Island and I won't get out.
Because I'm crazy baby.
I need you to come here and save me.
I'm your little scarlet starlet singing in the garden
Kiss me on my open mouth.

Now I'm off to the races, laces, leather on my waist is tight and I am falling down
I can see your faces, shameless, Chiffioni's basement.
Love you but I'm going down.
God I'm so crazy, baby, I'm sorry that I'm misbehaving.
I'm your little harlot, starlet, Queen of Coney Island. Raising hell all over town.
Sorry 'bout it.

My old man is a thief and I'm going to stay and pray with him til' the end,
But I trust him, the decision of the Lord to watch over us.
Take him when he may if he may. I'm not afraid to say that I'd die without him.
Who else is going to put up with me this way? I need you I breathe you I'd never leave you.
They would rue the day I was alone without you
You're lying with your gold chain on, cigar hanging from your lips.
I said, Hun, you never looked so beautiful as you do now my man.

And we're off to the races, places. Ready, set, the gate is down and then we're going in
To Las Vegas, chaos, casino oasis. Honey it is time to spit.
Boy you're so crazy, baby
I love you forever, Not maybe
You are my one true love
You are my one true love

I'm a dork, and must share my FAV song of all times with everyone... I sing it to my kiddos regularly and my regulars in my room have to "suffer through it" when it comes up on my play list too! I actually had a raffle last week, winner won a phone call...and he sang this song to me...I cried!! haha
It is Ralph Covert (the dude from Ralph's World for those of you with kiddos...but it is with his more adult band). The song is "Fools Will Try"

I can't get the darn link to work, but please take a listen anyway... LOVE IT...

And the lyrics...
Let your light shine from your heart
And the world will see you for who you are
Fill your words with all that you mean
And the world will light its way with your dreams
And don't let them drag you down, though fools will try
Be cool and strong
Be true to the truth you've found
Though fools will try to bring you down

And if you fall don't feel that you failed
You'll always find your feet again
And if you rise with a smile on your face
The world will marvel at your grace

And don't let them drag you down, though fools will try
Be cool and strong
Be true to the truth you've found
Though fools will try to bring you down

Fools will try to break your heart
Just remember who you are

Fill your life with all you believe
Your friends will light their way with your dreams

And don't let them drag you down, though fools will try
Be cool and strong
Be true to the truth you've found
Though fools will try to bring you down

But let your light shine from your heart
And the world will see you for who you are

Always a great track to chill to... Gary's solos on this are sublime. I adore Thin Lizzy's version on Live and Dangerous, but this version is equally as good. Enjoy.

Gary Moore and Phil Lynott, couple of underrated geniuses who left us way too soon.

As polar opposite as they are, my two favourite music genres are heavy metal and country. I can be in a mosh pit one night and chilling to a singing cowboy the next and not feel out of place at either show.

For my first post in this thread, I'm going for a modern country classic. It's not twangy, there's no singing cowboy, it's not about trucks or love or anything like that. There's great instrumentation featuring slide guitar, piano, a little violin and great harmonies from the lead singer and backups. It's a song that makes you think and reflect on your life and others.

This is "Moments" by Emerson Drive.

I'd have to say "Jolene" & "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne
There's just something about him that gets this secret side of me. :h:

"Jolene I ain't about to go straight It's too late
I found myself face down in the ditch
Booze in my hair Blood on my lips
A picture of you, holding a picture of me
In the pocket of my blue jeans
Still don't know what love means
" - Ray LaMontagne

Just discovered Mark Lanegan, awesome chill out blues.
He's got a great voice, he used to be lead singer for The Screaming Trees back in the 90s

Honestly, this one's more about the aesthetics.
