Just read this and wanted to share with the pet owners on the forum.

At least 360 dogs and one cat reportedly have died in the U.S. after eating chicken jerky pet treats made in China, even as claims of illnesses tied to the products have topped 2,200, federal veterinary health officials said.

Food and Drug Administration officials this week issued the first summary of reports of pet deaths linked to the jerky treats in the past 18 months, along with the strongest suggestion to date that owners might want to avoid the products all together.

Makes me glad my dogs prefer to snack on fresh veggies/fruits or chew bones. I feel bad for all the dog/cat parents that lost their furbabies though. :(

I got about 500 lbs of these things last summer from a Del Monte R & D facility I frequent. They sold like crazy at the flea market, and my dogs liked em better than any other treats I ever found. I first heard about the possibility that they may be a health hazard about 6 weeks ago. I had feed the last I had to my dogs about 8 weeks ago. I guess the ones I got were OK. Dam hate to think otherwise, or if they had been bad.

I recall the last big pet food scare that was killing a lot of pets. Our dog suffered from it as well, you could tell he was in a lot of physical distress. Our vet gave him a shot of steroids though and it fixed him up pretty well.

This was pointed out to me by a vet, there is no oversight (FDA) into the ingredients that go into your pets food and treats. Since most corporations are motivated purely by profit they will use the cheapest ingredients irregardless of the consequences to your pets health. I know every one's belts are tight but I recommend based on personal experience (Harrison's Bird Food) researching and giving your pet the highest quality food you can afford. While it's not cheap, it's worth it in the long run by reducing or eliminating trips to the vet and ensuring your pet lives a long and healthy life.
