MOBILE, Alabama --

Mobile police need your help to catch a mob that beat Matthew Owens so badly that he's in critical condition.

According to police, Owens fussed at some kids playing basketball in the middle of Delmar Drive about 8:30 Saturday night. They say the kids left and a group of adults returned, armed with everything but the kitchen sink.

Police tell News 5 the suspects used chairs, pipes and paint cans to beat Owens.

Owens' sister, Ashley Parker, saw the attack. "It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed." Parker says 20 people, all African American, attacked her brother on the front porch of his home, using "brass buckles, paint cans and anything they could get their hands on."

Police will only say "multiple people" are involved.

What Parker says happened next could make the fallout from the brutal beating even worse. As the attackers walked away, leaving Owen bleeding on the ground, Parker says one of them said "Now thats justice for Trayvon." Trayvon Martin is the unarmed teenager police say was shot and killed February 26 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Samford, Florida.

Police canvassed the area, but did not find any suspects. They're asking anyone with information to call them at 251-208-7211, Crime Stoppers at 251-208-7000, or text a tip to 274637 and include the keyword CRIME 411.

Right, this is getting out of hand. This is getting out of hand and blood is going to flow unless people get their heads unfucked. And when Obama is defeated in November, it is only going to get worse.

The only virtue to that asinine comment is that it isn't the MOST asinine comment I've ever heard. That would go to Allen West when he said in no uncertain terms that the entire progressive caucus is composed of COMMUNISTS. Joe McCarthy's back?

Pelosi is the most disgusting, asinine politician that still supposedly represents the people.

wow 20 people, dozens of weapons, and they didn't find any suspects so now they're asking the public to do their job for them? lol.

Anyone who commits a crime against someone of another race and claims it's justice for <insert name here> is the biggest idiot of all.

Gee, she saved your boy Bush's ass when she took impeachment off the table. She's a highly effective politician who happens to be a moderate in the Democratic party. Dunno why people hate her so much. Personally, I wish she were more progressive. :D

Think it's curious that some of those in here that fear of the federal government growing too big and taking away their rights are the same ones that are saying Trayvon had no rights on avoiding being obtained and questioned by a member of the neighborhood watch. Apparently a gated community is a police state and that's okay.

Contradiction is pretty much the status quo of conservative Republicans right now. Government should be small and not mess with our rights and freedoms, but first the government needs to outlaw abortions, birth control, non-abstinence only sex-ed, Planned Parenthood, and porn. Also, the government needs to put God back into the schools... but yeah, keep government small.

So now it's the conservative Republicans fault? Fucking morons that keep re-electing despicable politicians like Pelosi get what they deserve. She only wants people to earn more so they can pay the government more in taxes.

The net result being people earning more money. Key word people. Not corporations. I'm fine with this. I'll pay more in taxes if it means I get to make more money.

They got their tax breaks... they've had them for years, and the economy has gone to shit. The economy went to shit during the tax breaks and they tried to fix it with more tax breaks. If tax breaks have never worked, and tax increases have always worked... why are we fighting the increases? For people who supposedly love America, they sure don't seem to want to see it succeed.

Don't want to get into a huge off-topic political thing, but if you truly believe this, you clearly haven't been paying attention. Or you get all your info from Fox News.

Not a huge fan of Pelosi, but she's far from the worst on either side.

OT, but corporate leeway, which is very much a conservative mantra, was part of the reason your economy started its slide - reckless lending on an artificially inflated property market, largely unregulated and using money that the banks themselves borrowed from the government and later had to be bailed out to prevent even more economic problems. This was followed by a period of economic fear, leading to reduced investment, leading to higher unemployment, leading to more foreclosures, leading to...you get the picture.

Is it legal to skulk after someone on the street? Seems questionable. Even if it is legal, it's not smart. So Zimmerman's stupid plan maybe got him scratched or whatever his untrustworthy claim is. It's his action that led to the death of another person. He needs to stand up and own that. Can someone from Team Zimmerman please explain to me why following someone and shooting them makes more sense than not following and not shooting them? I mean, even IF you think Zimmerman had a right to follow someone and further escalate the situation into loss of life, you have to admit that HIS actions are what led to this disaster. When our actions have such a profound negative affect on those around us, punishment follows.

Team Zimmerman. I love it when you post, JJ.

Just to stir the pot here, cuz that's what I feel like doing atm  ... If Matt Owens had had a gun, would he have had the right [would YOU have given him the right] to defend himself from this mob and maybe plant a few of them for the attack or should he have taken this apparent retribution as he did? Dialing 911 would have not been a viable option to him, simply BC the average response time isn't fast enough to prevent anything but merely an after the fact investigation/documentation of an incident or crime.

It's sad that people are using Trayvon Martin's name to promote violence. I think if you're outnumbered, there's good reason to believe you may need to be ready to use force to protect yourself. In a one on one situation, things can be diffused, avoided or run away from more often than not (and we have the duty to do so as decent human beings imo). Once there's an angry mob, things may get complicated. I wonder what he did to get people so riled up? Also, it seems a little absurd to me that the article felt the need to point out that the mob was black.

Well it's beside the point because it's an entirely different situation, but I'm not even sure having a gun would have accomplished anything except maybe having the gun stolen or the owner killed with it. It's not like he was expecting the attack, or that he could predict what effect the gun would have on 20 people - would they disperse? Would they rush him? At what point would he realise he was under threat, would it be too late?

Everyone has the right to defend themselves, that isn't what any of this is about - the Trayvon Martin case is about a guy who used deadly force to defend himself in a situation that most of us, and the police, believe didn't warrant it. You have the right to defend yourself, and if you abuse that right and use deadly force inappropriately you are a murderer.

If he'd shot and killed one or more of them then he would have to have his motives and actions scrutinized just like everyone else. Sure he has the right to defend himself, but the community also has the right to evaluate his decision to do so - I think that's what the gun-lobby side of this debate is about. They want to be able to use deadly force without it coming under scrutiny, and that's a really dangerous path to follow.

Ask yourself this - if he's still alive after a mob of 20 beat him with paint cans, rocks, whatever they used - then how likely is it Zimmerman was ever in mortal danger even IF one 17 year old was beating him up with his bare hands for less than 5 minutes?

I also question if we have all the details here...he was beaten up by an angry mob for 'fussing'? His sister claims one of them mentioned Trayvon - really, or was that just an attempt to get coverage?

Yeah, as soon as I saw the word "fussing" I wanted to quit reading, terribly poorly written story and you can't even whisper the word "journalism" in its wake. Besides the story wasn't important; the poster wanted to make an idiotic statement and only used the story as a backdrop.

Vile.

I dunno. Have you ever been "fussed" at? I know it gets me pretty heated. "Beat a man with a paint can" kinda heated.

But yeah, this is probably going to be an issue for a while. The whole "'justice' for Trayvon" type thing. It's really annoying.

Yeah, she was obviously uncomfortable as hell. But when I read the comments, I see more evidence of why people feel rage at injustice. Ignorance, jumping the shark, blatant racism. Yeah, no mob should ever attack someone, no matter what he may have said, but neither should people start using racial slurs and showing their own hate when things like this happen.

I think the person who made the snide remark "that's justice for trayvon" wasn't the leading cause for why they went over there. BUT I don't want it to come off that I'm defending thugs I just think it was a comment said to be funny as opposed to the reason why they went over there. Now if the man who was getting beat, or anyone in the household had brought out a gun I would defend his right of self defense. It was at his home, they had come with weapons for the sole reason to cause harm. He didn't go looking for them, or create the situation. It's unfortunate he got beat up and I hope those are involved get justice but I hope that people don't use this story as ammunition of why Trayvon and stories like him shouldn't be reported.

"fussing" is deep-south (USA) for "yelling angrily, often with swear words and insults"

I think it's disrespectful both to those involved with the Martin case, and the victim of this beating to lump them both together as if they have anything at all in common. The perpetrators tried to do it, and now the media is trying to do it.

True enough, but mankind is violent by nature and the 'less in control of their mental facility' [aka- thugs] will always find some excuse to validate their need for physical fighting.
It's a similar parallel to lump together this jackwagon that shot Tray and use that as a reason to say all handgun ownership should be outlawed....

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/25/us-usa-florida-shooting-zimmerman-idUSBRE83O18H20120425

(Reuters) - A pit bull named Big Boi began menacing George and Shellie Zimmerman in the fall of 2009.

The first time the dog ran free and cornered Shellie in their gated community in Sanford, Florida, George called the owner to complain. The second time, Big Boi frightened his mother-in-law's dog. Zimmerman called Seminole County Animal Services and bought pepper spray. The third time he saw the dog on the loose, he called again. An officer came to the house, county records show.

"Don't use pepper spray," he told the Zimmermans, according to a friend. "It'll take two or three seconds to take effect, but a quarter second for the dog to jump you," he said.

"Get a gun."

That November, the Zimmermans completed firearms training at a local lodge and received concealed-weapons gun permits. In early December, another source close to them told Reuters, the couple bought a pair of guns. George picked a Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm handgun, a popular, lightweight weapon.

By June 2011, Zimmerman's attention had shifted from a loose pit bull to a wave of robberies that rattled the community, called the Retreat at Twin Lakes. The homeowners association asked him to launch a neighborhood watch, and Zimmerman would begin to carry the Kel-Tec on his regular, dog-walking patrol - a violation of neighborhood watch guidelines but not a crime.

What was I supposed to get out of that exactly? The character portrayal of who he is doesn't change the fact of what he did.

That has nothing to do with anything, what's next a description about how last time Trayvon walked to the store to get skittles he didn't get shot?

Isn't this what Zimmerman's fans were complaining about when the initial photos of Trayvon came out?

WTF does Dahmer have to do with this thread? I post pics of Trayvon and am accused of disrespecting his family, but y'all can post bullshit like that no problem. What a F'n joke!

Though civil rights demonstrators have argued Zimmerman should not have prejudged Martin, one black neighbor of the Zimmermans said recent history should be taken into account.

"Let's talk about the elephant in the room. I'm black, OK?" the woman said, declining to be identified because she anticipated backlash due to her race. She leaned in to look a reporter directly in the eyes. "There were black boys robbing houses in this neighborhood," she said. "That's why George was suspicious of Trayvon Martin."

I wonder why this woman is afraid of backlash from her own race? Could it be because the truth doesn't matter to a whole bunch of people that fell for all the racial rhetoric and race baiting? So much for the prosecution's profiling accusation.

Let's switch it around, for the sake of playing devil's advocate. It'd be okay if every white male got stopped every time by a cop because they fit the description of a suspect every time they were going somewhere? I never hear about this happening nor have I ever experienced it and personally if I grew up with it I'd get sick and tired of having to leave an extra half hour early so I wasn't late getting somewhere all the time. Now what if every white male not only had to worry about getting stopped by a cop, but being followed by some guy in a truck that never identifies himself, or what he wants, that'd be okay too? because a white man did a crime therefore EVERY WHITE MAN IS A SUSPECT DUN DUN DUNNNNN.

The whole point of that article seemed to be the same thing that you've been upset about with others in this thread calling Trayvon a kid, or posting pictures of him at graduation or describing him as an innocent little angle and everything else you wanted to disprove by posting pictures of him acting all gangsta and disrespectful and any other evidence you could find of him being a thug. in the article they describe him of being a choir boy who loved every one, who's only flaw was caring too much. "How could anyone who looked like this do anything like that on purpose?" and so the Dahmer picture gets posted, you know, for devil's advocate's sake.

I posted the Dahmer pic to show that even the most heinous, sadistic murderer can look cute and innocent when he's a kid. Leave this to the facts and stop assassinating the victim's character by painting him as a wannabe-gangster. By the same token propaganda about Zimmerman showing him as a kid and in an apron is just that; fucking propaganda.

He killed someone, that's what he's on trial for. That's the only fucking thing that matters about George Zimmerman to us. On the flipside, Trayvon Martin is dead, and that's the only thing that matters to us about Trayvon Martin.

There was racial profiling involved. You know how he was suspicious of Trayvon cos black people had been committing robberies and Trayvon was black? HELLO! That's racial profiling.

The fact that Zimmerman's neighbour is black doesn't give her some automatic authority to justify racial profiling.

Exactly Jupe... and furthermore, the black neighbor dispels any notion of bigots who think "they're all the same." It shows that everyone is different, no matter their ethnicity.

So you're getting upset about them getting upset of why you were upset that they got upset at you in the first place.
