OOPS THIS IS THE TOTALLY WRONG SUBFORUM. MY BAD, SORRY AMBER!

Found it on reddit, went to check it out myself.

I mean, I knew they're a religious group and all but I didn't mind donating to them or buying from their thrift stores because I figure their money still helps people eat and stuff. Now I feel weird about it. Maybe I should donate something to them with a note about where I earned it...or find a non-whatever-the-heck-you-call-this charity to donate to (Even if I'm not religious I still think this is a time of year to celebrate people and everyone should have a warm meal in their tummy etc).

Weird!

You might consider Goodwill, which no longer has a religious affiliation and seems to be all over the country.

And, at this time of year, a lot of police departments also do Blue Santa programs (which are more aimed at kids, but still a good cause).

They are also homophobic, so I won't donate to them anymore (although I have bought from their thrift stores and I guess I should probably stop doing that). All their "position statements" are here - http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www ... endocument

Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex. The Salvation Army believes, therefore, that Christians whose sexual orientation is primarily or exclusively same-sex are called upon to embrace celibacy as a way of life. There is no scriptural support for same-sex unions as equal to, or as an alternative to, heterosexual marriage.

I personally don't feel I can support an organization that holds that view.

Ugh screw them then. I wonder if (since they're supposed to be a charity too) I can dig up how much of their money goes towards feeding the homeless and how much goes towards trying to boss other people around...

Ah... that's funny. Oh, humans. When will they learn?

But yeah, thanks for posting that. I had no idea. I only really use Goodwill but now that I know Salvation Army is like that, I'll certainly be turning some of their business away, that's for sure.

Alright, I know I'm not the only person offended by this poster that the Salvation Army endorses and wants you to "share in your community."

http://www.pornharms.com/beaware/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/PH_PornHarmsPeople_700x1050-682x1024.gif

In case the text is too small, here are what my favorite two read:

I am a Stripper
I am an exotic dancer
I strip for men who shout obscenities at me
I pretend to like their attention, but I'll get fired if I don't
I hate the ones who touch me, or just stare with blank eyes
I drink and take drugs to get numb enough to go on
I've been forced to turn tricks to feed my kids
I have been raped twice.

I am Infected
I am married with two kids
We have a nice house with good neighbors
My 10-year-old son found hardcore porn in our home
I discovered my husband has been going to strip clubs
I have a sexually transmitted disease
He's become distant and defensive
Our savings is gone.

Because, you know, all strippers are completely miserable druggies that whore themselves out, and they all get raped multiple times. Also, if your husband looks at "hardcore" porn and visits strip clubs, that automatically means he's been sleeping around with everyone and will destroy your savings and give your STDS.

hey hey hey... lol.. lets not rush to judge those miserable druggie stripper whores... lol... the more broken a woman is the easier it is to control them

I went to rehab like 10 years ago...salvation army rehab. I liked them when I had no idea what they were like. When you see them out and about collecting for charity you rarely get to see what religious zealots and hypocrites they are.

Let me clarify; I went through rehab twice.

The first time, I had been there 6 months (of an 8 month program) when they kicked me and a girl out on the street on new years eve, because we'd spent weekend leave together (they had a retarded segregation policy). So yeah, new years eve, booted out onto the street, nowhere to go, biggest party night of the year and the rehab was on the Gold Coast about 10 minutes from Surfer's Paradise (a huge party hotspot, think ibiza type place etc). Talk about booting us out when we were most vulnerable, and of course we relapsed.

Not very compassionate. And all because we liked each other.

I kind of understand this, when going through trying to kick addiction, you look for another addiction/high and sex/love/liking someone could easily be used as a quick replacement because of the endorphin kick your body gets out of seeing and interacting (sexual or not) with a person you're attracted to. However, I still think the Salvation Army is some bullshit because of a lot of their views, same with PETA (with mostly different reason, one being this). I also think them kicking you out on one of the most drug plentiful nights of the year is also bullshit, but then again I think rehab in general is...you guessed it...bullshit.

/end weird drunken rant

Holy crap that is creepy as fuck.

The Salvation Army does 1,000,000 things I think are great and 1 or 2 that I don't. That's better than most people I know.

Hate on me all you want, but until a lot more non-religious people are willing to move into the ghetto and spend 24/7 feeding the hungry and helping the homeless find shelter and helping addicts get off the street, I'll keep supporting the Salvation Army.

What you never see is what's behind the scenes. All the salvo workers are paid wages, good wages. They have a job for life, they get given houses to live in, new cars every 2 years. There are some kind souls there, but there are plenty of judgemental, greedy, petty and devious ones too.

helping addicts get off the street
Well you can count me, the girl I was with at the time, another buddy of mine and several other people in rehab as addicts they threw back onto the street for petty infractions of their religious rules. They got a hardon for me because I didn't suddenly "find god" as soon as I got clean like half the other poor fools.

Just reminds me that it's not a bad thing that I handle all my own donations. Ie, you need a shirt? I have 10! Which would you like? :) Hmm, got this microwave I don't need; let me go see if the neighbors might want it.

I've worked together with a lot of Salvation Army folks (I live in, and do a heck of a lot of volunteer work, in the inner city). They may get a living wage, but I don't know any that are getting rich. In fact, many of them live more-or-less in voluntary poverty. No doubt there are some assholes in the group, but I've found that in every group. At least those assholes are mostly doing something worthwhile.

I'm sorry you ended up on the street at a time you were vulnerable. However, I like the Salvation Army's way of doing things a lot better than most other people's way of not doing anything.

Plus, if it's their program, then it's their rules. Every recovery program I know has rules, and people in the program don't like the ones that they don't want to follow. However, it's the rare person who puts their recovery ahead of such things who actually succeeds. (Please don't take that as a personal attack on your individual situation. I applaud you for getting and staying sober, and I'm saddened that your experience there was negative. However, both secular and religious programs have rules and I don't blame either for making people leave when they don't follow them. It's part of the "getting over yourself" that's necessary for most people's recovery.)

Why do all woman support homos what on earth is the secret ?????? i'm verry sorry i've been at university for 5 years but that is something i just don't understand

I get that they do a lot of good.
Really I do.

BUT: the adult industry and 'pornography' is how I make my living. It's my career and my livelyhood. They are trying to DESTROY that.

Dissaproving of something is one thing. Opinions are healthy.

Actively trying to take my rights away is another. As a bi-sexual and as someone who works in the adult industry, I'm just not going to support that any longer.

There are alternatives in my area.

The local animal shelter here has an excellent thrift store - all of the profits go to the animals. I generally like animals better than people. :p That's where my donations will be going in the future.

She might i don't know but lesbians don't bother me.
So if I had a dick and was porking my male roommate that would bother you even if you hadn't seen it or was aware of it? Hmm.... I'll take note of that.
