A members perspective on whales.
Firstly, we welcome anything which makes money for our favourite model. That isn't even remotely in dispute. We are happy to sit back and let that guy throw the tokens and fill her bank account.
Whales are a very different experience for the ordinary user depending on the context and particularly the site in question though. If it's a busy token site and she has hundreds of viewers then the whale (in my view) is less of an issue. He gets kind of lost in the crowd and ultimately everyone benefits, even the other tippers who still have some sense of a "shared experience".
Now, throw a whale into a room with only one or two other visitors and that whale, while still essentially the same beast, changes the dynamic completely. Suddenly there is no "shared experience" amongst the other non-whales. They are too few in number. Suddenly the one non-whale in the room potentially doesn't see the point in staying in the room. He's not going to be acknowledged and his tip actions are probably going to receive lower priority after the whales.
Now, while we understand that, and know that this is right and reasonable from the model's perspective, it can still be a bit disheartening. It's like trying out for your school soccer team and Maradona turns up to try out for the same position. We understand that Maradona is the better player and deserves to start, but it still stings. If there are members in the room who are long-term, steady, regular tippers then there is potential for noses to get out of place. It's not rational, but a lot of guys aren't rational.
Of course the other thing with whales is that they sometimes bring an ego which can cause problems. Ego + potentially jealous members = a pain in the ass.
