Well watch out if they ever get your number they will attack you via call and text. I've been getting lots of scam calls since I got this number, no wonder the last guy dropped it. I always have calls silenced, and I never check my VM messages, so I couldn't care less. But texts is a whole other level. I always check those and I am a pretty active texter. I guess these assholes figured that out.

I wonder if that person who called a while back, (after me having the phone a year), saying she was the last guys Mom, was actually a scam. I always thought it was weird his Mom wouldn't call him for a year or know his new number.

I try not to answer any call or text unless it’s from a contact I know is legit, or I’m expecting a call from that area code. Everyone else, I figure if they’re legit, they’ll leave a voicemail so I can decide if I need to get back to them.

Sometimes all scammers are looking for is an initial response to confirm someone is using that number, in order to escalate whatever scams they’re running. I don’t dare interact with them at all, even if it’s just telling them to fuck off.

On a long interstate drive, I found myself wondering if scientists could locate and surgically remove whatever part of the brain contains the inbuilt habit that slow drivers have, of speeding up again whenever you find a safe opportunity to overtake them........

Oh god yes! I do not make the road trip back to the city of my birth often but so many times... when there is a passing lane built into the highway, that slow driver will suddenly manage to actually travel at the speed limit 👿

Listening to a prescription medication commercial, "not for those with type 2 diabetes or children."

Phrasing, people. Phrasing matters.

They meant to say "Not for those with Type 2 Diabetes, or women who are pregnant"...but instead they said "Not for those with Type 2 Diabetes...or children?" 😂

I think they meant it wasn't for children to use. There was a different pregnancy disclaimer. I hate that they can even advertise them at all. "Ask your doctor...". Shouldn't my doctor tell me?

I took it as “not for those with Type 2 Diabetes, and also not for children.” But I agree with @Vixxen81, it sure could have been worded better, whatever they meant.

Oh, ok. Lol. Yes, very weird wording.

Don't doctors in the US get commission for selling you prescription meds too? That must make it really hard to trust whether you even need meds or just have a money-hungry doctor!

They do, it's in part why the opioid crises is what it is in the states. The latest scandal is doctors prescribing a diabetes med for general weight loss to anyone who asked for it. The whole system is a mess. People who need the meds can't get them and those that don't can.

I had a doctor like that years ago. Prescribed me like 6-8 weeks of an allergy medication I didn’t need and flat-out told me I might need it indefinitely. I found out through word of mouth & online reviews by other patients that he was doing that with a lot of people.

Likely because he was getting a commission or kickback from prescribing that brand of medication. Guy was a total sleazeball.

Yes, one of my biggest regrets in life is allowing psychiatrists to convince me to put my son on all sorts of medications when he was a kid. 😢 Because back then I'd actually thought I could trust medical professionals to only recommend what's best for my child. NOPE.

This is another thing about the USA that stuns much of the rest of the world. In Australia such advertising is illegal/banned. (has never been allowed)

Yeah but Australia did or tried to ban small titty women from being in porn...that said, you're not wrong. :) This is a direct result of the lobbying efforts allowed by corporations to sitting members of Congress. In the last 60 days, Congress approved $35 a month insulin for those on medicare programs, but no one else. The medical field in this country is not pro-patient, it is pro-grift. A single tablet of Tylenol or paracetamol can be anywhere from $10 to $40 depending on which hospital system you end up in for whatever ailments haunt you. Hospitals now charge for laying the baby on dad's chest after delivery. It's ridiculous.

Umm..what? I need a citation for that please? (Or were you joking?)

It appears it was eventually turned into the law like what we have here, "no one appearing to be under 18 may produce adult content". It did start out with flat chested women being a target of the law.

I didn’t even know that drug existed until a few days ago, but now it feels like I’m seeing people talk about it everywhere. I mostly just browse here and Reddit, and discussions about it have been popping up on the most random subreddit posts. Literally found out about it through a post on r/dundermifflin and I’ve seen a lot of people talking about it on fitness type subreddits.

It seems like now since so many people are using it for the weight loss effects/doctors are prescribing it to basically anyone, actual diabetics are having a hard time getting it?

Yep! That's the stuff. On top of that, other medications are in short supply, mostly ADHD meds and anti-psychotics. I would not be surprised if some of these teen school shooters are people who can't get their meds.

I am not an expert, but I do not think it ever happened. That article is 8 years old and seems to refer to an even older article (2010). I have no doubt that our idiotic conservative politicians did indeed try to do that. At one point (2015) our Prime Minister was a rabid Catholic who had actually studied for the priesthood (didn't go through with it) at a seminary. We referred to him as "the mad monk" .

But I am unsure that such laws were ever actually passed.

Chaturbate bans users who look under 18 until they look old enough (whatever the fuck that means) and I think that's where the original intent with this in Australia lied. I think the laws should be changed so that you have to be 19 years and 1 day old to become a sex worker/entertainer. I'm not sure if that's a popular or unpopular opinion but 1 day after your 18th birthday is no different than the day before it. Take that year to explore the world before diving into something that will impact the rest of your life. Thanks for coming to my Nobody Asked V's Opinion Ted Talk :D

I didn’t know about the anti-psychotics. How would anyone even be able to abuse those? I know most mood stabilizers and medications for psychosis inducing disorders have some pretty adverse side effects and can be dangerous.

I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t even read much into the details about any school shootings now. It just depresses me way too much. The mental health system in the US is an absolute joke. It’s way too hard to get real help, and it seems like most providers just don’t care.

I have so many personal horror stories about the way mental health providers treat their patients. Most providers will just write you a prescription for an antidepressant and call it a day. Some just actively ignore your needs. And then there’s those who will assume you’re just looking for xanax and treat you like dirt. Or, they’ll throw you in an inpatient facility, where the majority of the time you come out worse than when you were put in. I’ve never been in an inpatient facility, but I did some research on the facilities in my area and the reviews were absolutely horrifying. I know a couple people who had family members involuntarily committed, and the way their loved ones got treated by people who are supposed to be helping them is disgusting.

It's a shortage of materials to make the drugs. The demand is much too high for the supply because as you just said the mental health system in this country is absolute garbage and they hand out scripts like Pez dispensers and hope it fixes the brain chemistry. I once quipped I thought I was ADHD and my doctor gave me Stratera. I found myself locked in my bathroom wanting to die. Literally. I couldn't stop it. I wasn't ADHD to that level, I was just bored out of my mind.

We can thank Saint Ronnie Reagan for the shitshow of mental health care in this country. His administration decided it was cruel and unusual punishment to institutionalize people when meds couldn't control their behavior enough to keep them in polite society. The boomer generation of "suck it up buttercup" mentality on full display hasn't helped. And in reflexive response to that, now every single thing a person feels or doesn't feel is a disorder.

I'm not a doctor, I don't know shit about shit other than the default state of humans is not "happy", it's being "aware". Ignorance is bliss. The more you know about the world and the people in it and how we keep shooting ourselves in the collective foot, hell yeah you have a right to be depressed and pissed off and feeling like nothing is ever going to change.

Interestingly (perhaps) you have to be 18 in Australia to do such work, even though the age of consent here is 16.

My understanding is that the law that was being discussed in that *article* was taken out of context, and relates to illegal pornography depicting minors, or deliberately representing them as minors (even if they are not).
The relevant section of that law is worded:
"depictions or descriptions of persons who are, or appear to be, under 18 years of age"
