Anyone else loving Payday 2?
The tagline is "Rob banks with friends", and that's what it is. The player and up to three other players perform robberies and similar missions along the lines of popular "heist" adventures, like the movie "Heat" or the TV series "Smith".
The game uses first-person shooter mechanics, and players often have a variety of methods to take down each "score". Maybe they stealthily infiltrate a jewelry store and steal a single valuable item by disabling the cameras and silently picking the safe, or maybe they go rock-n-roll and use shock and violence to subdue a bank until they can blast into the vault and make off with the loot.
The game uses skill trees and equipment customization to allow characters to have true specializations and experiment with the different approaches to each job. A team of communicative players can (stealth) disable a security system while the leader (mastermind) convinces a guard to give up and not sound an alarm. The brains (tech) can get to work picking the safe, while their escort (tank) stands ready with heavy armor and weapons if the extraction gets dicey.
It is solely intended for multi-player, although the player can run offline missions with AI team members. There is no campaign, but it makes for a fun few hours with friends. There is plenty of replay value as a player's character gains skills and can try different tactics. Different versions of missions have difficulty modifiers to allow for both new and experienced characters, and the reward system scales appropriately to keep the character earning reasonable rewards (XP and loot).
If you like on-line play and games that emphasize small unit tactics, I think you'll enjoy Payday 2.
If you are playing it, what do you currently like most about it? Or what is most annoying?
Me, I'm loving the rush when the job kicks off and my character masks-up and cowers an entire room into silence. Watching all those "alert" icons clear without an alarm going off is great!
