Not sure if this hour long TV documentary that was on earlier this week is viewable outside of the UK, but did anyone watch it?

I see there are many torrents of this available (and I doubt the BBC is anywhere near as sue-happy as Hollywood), so I might have to download it and have a look. Thanks for the info!

Well, I watched a bit of it using a VPN. The upshot for me was that cam models can be just as boring and annoying as anyone else.

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

This was such a boring documentary it was almost offensive. None of the girls worked on MFC, which considering is one of the biggest camsites out there, is such an oversight for the supposed "truth" about webcam girls. All the girls were on private-based sites, which while that's great, it would have been really swell for them to put some effort into finding more varied camgirls. They mentioned a BIT on personality taking a role in it, as well as cooking shows, but considering HOW many camgirls are hang-out, non-nude, or public-show girls...it's sort of crazy to me that they wouldn't attempt to show that side of camming. Even girls who do hardcore public shows on MFC spend the majority of their time chatting and trying to make countdown before the sex action. I mean, if you're on cam for say 2 hours and do 1 public show that lasts say, 15 minutes, 7/8th of your time is spent pretty much being a normal person chilling with friends.

I really wish ONE documentary would even mention this.

I don't think it was TOO slut-shamey but it definitely had "that tone".

It was cool they had a non-nude fetish/glamour model on there but it was less cool that the reason she didn't get naked was because it's a "slippery slope into things like prostitution."

It always makes me wonder why video sites even bother with blocking by regions anymore. Such an antiquated concept. Anyone willing to download a free VPN or pay for a better one with more options can take 10 seconds to switch over to that region and their videos play.

And yes, this video was boring.

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

The girls featured were all found through Adultwork. I remember the company sent emails to all UK girls registered on there.

Whilst the programme didn't portray camming as sleazy, unsavoury or a "last resort", I thought the models showed contempt and a total lack of respect for their customers. If I was one of their regulars I'd be taking my tokens elsewhere.

I remember the email I received talked about empowerment...did they mean feeling superior and looking down on the hand that feeds us? I had several emails a day from them and I remember they eventually asked if camming had given me the strength to beat my breast cancer; when I told them no, I would have beaten if I'd been a accountant or dentist, they backed off. So maybe these girls were portrayed in a pre-determined way. From the emails I received it certainly seemed they had a fixed angle.

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

I think from a cam girl point of view or from a point of view of someone who spends time with cam girls, it's easy to say it perhaps didn't paint us in the worst possible light- because it didn't paint us as entirely sleazy and they did involve some of the good parts if you're familiar enough to spot them.

But I don't think camming in the UK is a particularly well known thing unless you're already a part of it, if that makes sense? So what the BBC have just blasted to however many people who weren't familiar with camming in any sense, was a very select group of girls from one site who clearly don't have much respect for the people who're paying them and are only interested in them for the couple of quid they'll toss their way, who don't really want to cam all that much, and the whole thing didn't really paint a decent picture of camming or what it is in the slightest. I have a lot of friends who watched it who were completely disgusted thinking that that's what I spend my nights doing now despite me trying to explain otherwise, because that was their first view of the camming world and what it entails.

I sometimes forget that not everyone in the industry feels the sense of community that this site has brought to my work at all, and maybe they don't have so many friends from the industry, or guys who really take care of them or the solidarity I feel knowing so many other camgirls. And it's got me wondering if maybe one day that's how I'd have seen camming, as my job, if maybe I hadn't found acf, made friends, and learned more about admin and marketing and the ton of other stuff that we get up to off cam.

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

Yup I saw it! Was quite boring as I guessed it would be.
They didn't portray the girls as bad as expected, however I still don't get the point they was trying to make regarding the "truth".
Is it to show people what actually goes on behind closed doors? Well they didn't quite hit the nail on the head as I've never performed on cam the way these girls did.

Half hearted efforts, more or less licking the webcam, wearing scruffy jeans and boxers whilst pulling them down slightly to finger fuck yourself. It's just not how the real world of camming is, this is the OLD fashioned way of camming not 21st century.
Now days camming has so many different aspects which makes it 1/2 porn and 1/2 entertainment. We have girls painting their bodies, girls singing and chatting and laughing, raffles and competitions, shower shows, fun props.

The girl stated she earnt £300 a night, yet her home was a complete state and so was she.

Another run down documentary

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

I suspect the "truth" part was just "look at what your daughters are doing now". Since it's part of a new series of real life (by BBC standards) stuff re drinking/drugs/teen stuff. Most likely they just wanted to shock.

Re: The Truth About Webcam Girls (BBC3 TV Show, not ranting!

I was filmed for this show but they didn't use me.

They wanted me to do more bizarre things on cam than I normally do and I had a word with them that it's not really a documentary if you are orchestrating what gets shown on the show which isn't what actually happens.

I was mildly forced to squish a banana with my feet while in a session despite me asking the customer if thats what he liked. Luckily he was into my feet already, but I was brought a banana from my kitchen and told to tell the customer thats whats going down. He loved it, and it was hilarious, but not exactly my camming truth...
