i just learned yesterday that tumblr had been bought by yahoo....my immediate thought was "uh-oh"

http://www.zdnet.com/adult-tumblr-blogs-now-removed-from-every-form-of-search-possible-7000018295/

I dont understand.

I'm still seeing these tags... when I search for adult related content with tags on tumblr, when i look under "gay" tag (WTF seriously?? they are removing the word GAY??) and when I google my blog shows up.

So while I agree these changes are insane, im not actually seeing them taking effect? Am I missing something?

Only blogs that have been flagged will not show up. If your blog has not been flagged then it will still show up in searches and tags.

If your blog is flagged what will happen is when you go to your settings and scroll to this part:

The NSFW will be checked (and you wont be able to uncheck it).

I am not sure if your posts will or will not show up if you check the NSFW box yourself. But I do know that if they do it, it wont show up :twocents-02cents:

Well, that settles that.

i'm actually far more outraged that the word GAY and BISEXUAL have been removed from searches.
SINCE WHEN was a word describing a sexual orientation inherently adult.
Can they please also remove the word HETEROSEXUAL ???

I feel like that is far more rage worthy than their efforts to reduce the visablity of porn. IT SUCKS for me if my blog gets flagged.. but really, the GAY TAG IS NOT ALLOWED???

Well, it sounds like Tumblr needs to die and a new website needs to rise to the occasion.

Anyone still use Myspace?

Does this mean I am naughty or not naughty enough? I always thought my stuff was artistic in a nude way.

Adult content is only hidden if you're logged out and/or have safe mode turned on. Not sure why people seem to be implying that it's hidden completely. Hiding it by default doesn't seem to me to be that outrageous of a thing to do. However, you do need to have an account and know to go into your settings to turn safe mode off. I'm not hopeful that they'll make the setting more easily accessible or available to users who aren't logged in (like Google does). You're not able to get to adult content on Flickr without signing in... So that's craptastic.

Hiding *all* content tagged #gay by default is just ridiculous... Search results do indeed turn up nothing on Android if logged out, and on the website with safe mode on the search gets redirected to #lbgtq even if you type the full url instead of using the search bar.

Edit: Actually maybe adult posts *don't* show up at all? Can't really test it like I thought. I have a joke blog that is literally nothing but dicks that I thought was flagged adult, but it's only flagged NSFW and I can't change it, even to adult. So those posts still showing up means nothing. If that content is hidden completely, yeah that's super craptastic.

That isn't the way I read the article. They are saying Tumblr's that have been marked as adult content will have a certain html code embedded in them to stop all search engine spiders from even going into those web pages. So it doesn't matter if YOU have signed in or have safe settings to off. They will not show up in any search result for anyone because they have not been cataloged by any search engines.

In other words if your page has been marked adult, Tumblr is now forcing all search engines to bypass your page. No results will ever be found for anything on your page from then on. It becomes invisible to the net.

Tumblr users were not made aware of the fact that adult blogs are not indexed by Google no matter what preference the user has expressed.

That much is true AFAIK, they're doing it via robots.txt file. Also just edited to say I might be wrong in the first place. Can't actually tell if I'm seeing adult flagged content in search or not, though definitely not any shortage of porn in there yet.

Just for the sake of sharing information:

If I search my name on Google, my Tumblr will show up in the results and if you click it, it will go there, however the description on Google says this. "A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt" Figures. This goes with what has been said in this thread.

I was worried initially about the Tumblr change and then they were SO adamant about the fact that Yahoo wouldn't fuck up adult blogs and now here we go. :/ I am super not amused.

I'm really upset and sad about the issues with restrictions on tags. Stop being absolutely ABSURD Yahoo. :angry4:

My lame and boring Tumblr bloggy thing got flagged as adult content for some reason. Took a few emails before they fixed it. And I only have my wife as a follower so it was pretty funny in my case. But they (Tumblr security something via emails) admitted that they had no idea why it was flagged. Not that it matters in my case but it made me laugh because the photo I had on there was of my great grandparents and grandmother from approximately the year 1919. And yes, they were fully clothed.

And now that I am searchable I still only have one follower.

They listened to us, they listened to us, they care!

http://staff.tumblr.com/post/5590655637 ... ou-who-are

All, we’ve heard from a bunch of you who are concerned about Tumblr censoring NSFW/adult content. While there seems to be a lot of misinformation flying around, most of the confusion seems to stem from our complicated flagging/filtering features. Let me clear up (and fix) a few things:

1. Last year, we added “Safe Mode" which lets you filter out NSFW content from tag and search pages. This is enabled by default for new users and can be toggled in your Dashboard Settings. As some of you have pointed out, disabling Safe Mode still wasn’t allowing search results from all blogs to appear. This has been fixed.

2. Some search terms are blocked (returning no results) in some of our mobile apps. Unfortunately, different app environments have different requirements that we do our best to adhere to. The reason you see innocent tags like #gay being blocked on certain platforms is that they are still frequently returning adult content which our entire app was close to being banned for. The solution is more intelligent filtering which our team is working diligently on. We’ll get there soon. In the meantime, you can browse #lgbtq — which is moderated by our community editors — in all of Tumblr’s mobile apps. You can also see unfiltered search results on tumblr.com using your mobile web browser.

3. Earlier this year, in an effort to discourage some not-so-nice people from using Tumblr as free hosting for spammy commercial porn sites, we started delisting this tiny subset of blogs from search engines like Google. This was never intended to be an opt-in flag, but for some reason could be enabled after checking off NSFW → Adult in your blog settings. This was confusing and unnecessary, so we’ve dropped the extra option. If your blog contains anything too sexy for the average workplace, simply check "Flag this blog as NSFW" so people in Safe Mode can avoid it. Your blog will still be promoted in third-party search engines.

Aside from these fixes, there haven’t been any recent changes to Tumblr’s treatment of NSFW content, and our view on the topic hasn’t changed. Empowering your creative expression is the most important thing in the world to us. Making sure people aren’t surprised by content they find offensive is also incredibly important and we are always working to put more control in your hands.

Sorry for all of the confusion. If you have any more concerns or suggestions on how we can make these features clearer or more useful, please email us!
